maelove retinal serum review

Want to get rid of fine lines and dark spots faster, but don’t fancy dealing with the peeling, dryness, and irritation that usually come with powerful retinoids? Join the club. Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum promises to give you the best of both worlds. It uses 0.11% encapsulated retinal, a form of vitamin A that works faster than retinol, together with niacinamide, ceramides, and other moisturising goodies to keep your skin happy.

And the best part? It costs just $39.95. Not bad for a serum that claims to give you prescription-like results without the usual side effects, huh? But here’s the thing: retinal is still a powerful retinoid, and adding a few soothing ingredients doesn’t magically make irritation disappear. So, does Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum really deliver on its promises, or is there a catch? Let’s find out.

The Verdict

Rating: 4.5/5

Best for: Experienced retinol users who want to take their anti-aging routine up a notch.

Skip it if: You’re new to retinoids or your skin is sensitive to fragrant essential oils.

What I Like: It makes my skin smoother and brighter, helps even out my skin tone, and feels lightweight and comfortable on my skin, affordable price point. It’s also suitable for most skin types, including dry skin and acne-prone skin.

What I Don’t Like: I didn’t notice much improvement in my wrinkles, it’s not moisturising enough on its own, and the fragrant essential oils may irritate sensitive skin.

The Bottom Line: Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum is a good option if you’re ready to graduate from retinol to something stronger without spending a fortune. I love how smooth and bright it makes my skin look, but don’t expect it to erase deep wrinkles or give you prescription tretinoin results overnight. And those fragrant oils? I wish Maelove had left them out.

Active Ingredients In Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum: What Does The Science Say?

RETINAL: THE STAR OF THE SHOW

Retinol is great and all, but what if you could get the same results faster? Enter retinal (a.k.a. retinaldehyde). It’s retinol’s more powerful cousin, and it has a little trick up its sleeve: it only needs one conversion step to become retinoic acid, the active form of vitamin A that fights wrinkles, dark spots, and acne.Retinol needs two.

Once converted into retinoic acid, retinal boosts collagen production, helping your skin stay firm and wrinkles look smaller. It also speeds up cell turnover, helping dark spots fade faster. And yes, there’s research showing it can help repair UV-related collagen damage. Not bad, huh?

In a 2018 clinical trial, both 0.05% and 0.1% retinal improved skin’s texture and hydration after three months. The higher concentration also helped fade dark spots. Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum contains 0.11% retinal, which is higher than the concentration used in the study. Good news.

But can it really give you prescription-like results? There’s some science behind that claim. In a 1998 clinical trial, 0.05% retinal improved wrinkles and skin roughness as well as 0.05% prescription tretinoin, with less irritation. Impressive, huh? The catch? One study doesn’t prove retinal works as well as tretinoin at every concentration, or that Maelove’s formula will give you exactly the same results.

One more thing: the retinal is encapsulated to keep it stable and help reduce irritation. But don’t let that fool you. Retinal can still cause dryness, peeling, and irritation, especially if you’re new to retinoids.

NIACINAMIDE TO STRENGTHEN YOUR SKIN BARRIER AND REDUCE IRRITATION

Retinal fights wrinkles and dark spots, but it can also leave your skin dry and irritated. Not cool. That’s where niacinamide comes in. It helps your skin make more ceramides, the natural fats that strengthen its protective barrier and keep moisture in. Plus, niacinamide has another trick up its sleeve: it helps fade away dark spots, too. In a clinical study, it reduced hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone after four weeks.

CERAMIDES TO KEEP YOUR SKIN BARRIER HAPPY

Ceramides are the glue that holds your skin cells together, keeping moisture in and irritants out. When your skin doesn’t have enough of them, it gets dry and irritated more easily. And guess what? Retinoids can temporarily mess with your skin barrier.Adding ceramides can help. In a clinical study, a moisturiser containing a ceramide precursor helped reduce irritation from prescription tretinoin. Retinal is a lot less irritating than tretinoin. Does that mean Maelove’s ceramides will stop retinal from drying out your skin completely? Nope. If you use too much too soon, you can still experience side effects.  But they do help support your skin barrier while retinal does its job.

My Experience With Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum

First things first: this isn’t your typical clear, watery serum. It has a bright yellow colour and a milky, lightweight texture that’s somewhere between a serum and a lotion. It spreads easily, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy or sticky. So far, so good. It also has a mild citrus scent, thanks to the essential oils in the formula. I don’t mind it, but I could happily do without fragrance in a retinal serum. For sensitive skin types, fragrance is a no-no, especially paired with strong actives, like retinoids.

The packaging is a bottle with a dropper. Nothing fancy, but it makes it easy to dispense the amount I need without making a mess. Now, onto the important stuff. Does Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum actually work? My skin definitely feels smoother and looks brighter, just like I expected from a retinoid product. But if you’re expecting deep wrinkles to disappear, you’ll be disappointed.

I also found that the serum wasn’t quite moisturising enough on its own, so I needed to follow up with a moisturiser.  Would I use it again? Yes. I like how it feels on my skin, and I’m happy with the improvements in texture and brightness. But if you’re hoping for prescription level benefits, manage your expectations.

How To Use Maelove Moonlight Serum

Retinal is powerful stuff. The last thing you want is to go overboard and end up with a red, flaky face instead of smoother skin. Here’s how to use it:

  1. Cleanse: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry.
  2. Apply: Massage a few drops of Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum onto your face, avoiding the eye area and corners of your nose and mouth.
  3. Moisturise: Follow with your favourite moisturiser to help prevent dryness and irritation. You can also use a Hyaluronic Acid serum before moisturiser if you need the extra moisture.

New to retinal? Start with once a week in your evening skin care routine. If your skin is happy, increase to a couple times a week after a couple of weeks, and slowly work your way up to every other night. There’s no rush. Your wrinkles aren’t going anywhere overnight, anyway. Don’t use glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or other physical or chemical exfoliants on the same night, especially while your skin is getting used to retinal.

I don’t recommend daily use with any member of the retinoid family because overdoing it won’t give you faster results. It’ll just irritate your skin.  For thee same reason, a little goes a long way too. And please, wear sunscreen every morning. What’s the point of fighting sun damage at night if you’re letting UV rays undo all your hard work during the day?

Does Maelove Moonlight Retinal Super Serum Live Up To Its Claims?

CLAIM TRUE?
Dermatologists love Moonlight Retinal because it delivers powerful, prescription-like results with significantly less irritation.  It does deliver powerful results and it’s less irritating than prescription retinoids, but there’s not much proof it delivers prescription-like results yet. Only the one study I mentioned above.
Your skin, but smoother. Yes, retinal can give you smoother skin.
