If you’re looking at Skinbetter Science sunscreens, you’ve probably noticed the prices first. These aren’t exactly bargain-bin SPFs, so I wanted to know whether the formulas actually justify the cost or whether you’re mostly paying for pretty packaging and a fancy name. I looked at the ingredients, textures and real-world experiences with four of the brand’s mineral sunscreens to see which ones are actually worth considering. And there are some clear winners. Not all four are equally impressive, and the biggest difference isn’t whether one has SPF 56 and another has SPF 75. It’s the formula, finish, tint and how practical they are to use every day. If you’re spending $55–$75 on sunscreen, you deserve to know which one is actually worth the money and which one I’d skip, so let’s dive in.
Skinbetter Sunbetter TONE SMART SPF 75 Sunscreen Lotion ($75.00)
This is the Skinbetter sunscreen I’d actually spend money on if pigmentation is the problem. It’s a thick, creamy tinted sunscreen rather than one of those barely-there formulas, and the tint gives enough coverage to noticeably even out the skin. It has a dewy, makeup-like finish, which I like, but it can feel heavy if you prefer lightweight SPF. The shade can also be a problem if you’re very fair or have a cooler skin tone. The formula uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for UV protection, while the iron oxides in the tint can help with visible-light protection. My verdict: excellent if you want pigmentation protection plus some coverage, less appealing if you hate thick sunscreen or don’t want to pay $75.
Key Ingredients : 10% Zinc oxide and 3.5% Titanium dioxide.
Benefits: High broad spectrum sunscreen, Tinted with iron oxides; Light complexion coverage; Dewy finish.
Cons: Very expensive; Thick texture, can feel heavy; Tint won’t suit everyone.
Skin Types: Normal, Dry, Combination.
Fragrance-Free: Yes.
Skinbetter Sunbetter SHEER SPF 56 Mineral Sunscreen Compact ($70.00)
This is the cleverest product in the range, but it’s a reapplication product, not something I’d rely on as my main sunscreen. The texture is unusual: more like a soft mousse that sets to a smooth, almost powdery finish. It blurs the skin rather than leaving it looking wet, which makes it much easier to use over makeup. You can throw it in your bag and reapply without smearing liquid sunscreen all over your face. It uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for mineral protection, with silicones and powders helping create that smooth, blurred texture. And $70 for a tiny compact is frankly hard to defend. It’s worth considering if sunscreen reapplication is something you consistently avoid because it’s inconvenient, but don’t assume a quick swipe gives you the full SPF 56. You still need to pile on the powder.
Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide 10% and Titanium dioxide 5%.
Benefits: Smooth, blurred finish; Excellent format for reapplication; Works over makeup.
Cons: Very expensive; Small amount of product; Doesn’t offer optimal protection from UV rays unless you apply several layers; Easy to under-apply.
Skin Types: Normal, Combination and Oily.
Fragrance-Free: Yes.
Skinbetter sunbetter SHEER SPF 70 Sunscreen Lotion ($75.00)
Honestly? The “sheer” part is where I have a problem. This is a high-protection mineral sunscreen with a creamy texture, but it leaves a noticeable white cast It isn’t a dry, chalky mineral formula, though. Glycerin, squalane, panthenol and silicones make it feel more moisturising and comfortable, so dry and normal skin will probably have an easier time with it than very oily skin. The actual sunscreen protection comes from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, with niacinamide there to brighten skin and hydrate it. But at $75, I expect the cosmetic experience to be excellent, and that’s where this falls short for me. If you specifically want a high level of sun protection from mineral filters and don’t mind some opacity, fine. Otherwise, I’d save the money.
Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide 10% and Titanium dioxide 3.6%.
Benefits: High broad-spectrum sun protection; Moisturising feel.
Cons: White cast; Very expensive; Not tinted; Can feel too creamy for oily skin.
Skin Types: Normal, Dry and Combination.
Fragrance-Free: Yes.
Skinbetter sunbetter SHEER SPF 56 Mineral Sunscreen Stick ($55.00)
This is the one I’d keep in my handbag, not the one I’d use for my morning sunscreen. The stick glides on smoothly and feels more silky than waxy, which is a big improvement over a lot of mineral sticks. The silicone-heavy formula helps it spread without that horrible drag, and it leaves a relatively smooth finish. It’s convenient for topping up SPF when you’re out, especially if you’re wearing makeup. The problem is the same one that applies to pretty much every sunscreen stick: it’s incredibly easy to under-apply. It uses zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, so the protection itself is legitimate, but you need enough product to actually get the labelled protection. If convenience means you’ll actually reapply sunscreen, it’s useful. If you’re looking for a proper sunscreen to apply in the morning, absolutely no.
Key Ingredients: Zinc oxide 10% and Titanium dioxide 5%.
Benefits: Smooth, silky texture; Easy to carry; Convenient for reapplication; protects from UV rays if properly applied.
Cons: Expensive; Easy to under-apply; Small amount of product.
Skin Types: Normal, Dry, Combination, and Oily.
Fragrance-Free: Yes.

The Bottom Line
Overall, Tone Smart SPF 75 is my pick, especially if pigmentation is your concern. The Compact is the most useful for reapplication, while the Stick is convenient but too easy to under-apply. The Sheer SPF 70 is the one I’d skip. Good mineral protection, but $75 is a lot to pay for a sunscreen that can leave a white cast. Skinbetter makes good formulas, but good doesn’t automatically mean worth the price.
