For starters, ectoin helps your skin maintain the correct water balance AND reduces transepidermal water loss. In plain English, it keeps your skin hydrated and soft for longer. Do you know that when skin has all the moisture it needs, it glows too?

Initial research also suggests ectoin can protect skin from environmental stressors, like UVA rays and pollution (you know, those nasty culprits that give you premature wrinkles). All these properties make it a godsend for sensitive, easily irritated skin.

• Propanediol: It enhances the penetration of other ingredients. And it’s another solvent too.
• Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: Derived from coconut oil, it has all the moisturising effects without giving you pimples.
• Coconut Alkanes: Another super moisturising ingredient derived from coconut oil.
• Maltodextrin: A sugar that acts as a stabiliser and absorbent in skincare products.
• Phenoxyethanol: A preservative that prevents nasty bacteria from growing in your serum.
• Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate: It’s an emulsifier that keeps oil-and-water formulas blended together.
• Panthenol: It has soothing and hydrating properties that are godsend for sensitive skin.
• Cetearyl Alcohol: A fatty alcohol that hydrates skin (yes, the right kind of alcohol can be hydrating!).

• Phytosphingosine: The base component of ceramides, (you guessed it!) it keeps your protective barrier intact and your skin moisturised.
• Behenic Acid: It thickens and opacifies cosmetics.
• Sodium Levulinate: It moisturises skin and has mild preservative properties that inhibit the growth of bacteria.
• Polyglycerin-3: It’s a humectant that attracts and binds water from the air into your skin, keeping it hydrated for longer.
• Potassium Sorbate: A preservative that prevents bacteria from growing in your cream.
• Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate: It’s a cleansing agent. I’m giving it a yellow rating only because I’m not sure what it does in a moisturiser.
• Ceramide EOP: It fills in the gaps in a broken protective barrier, keeping skin soft and protected.

Texture

This serum has a lightweight, almost gel-like consistency that absorbs super quickly. It layers well under other products without pilling (yay!). And it leaves no sticky residue. The only downside? It doesn’t slip on as well as other hydrating serums. But for the price, who complains?

Fragrance

It’s fragrance-free, which is always a plus in my book. I don’t know about you, but as much as I love bouquets, I don’t need my face to smell like one. Also, fragrance is a common irritant, so the fact that there’s not a drop of it here makes it perfect for sensitive skin.

How To Use It

Use it morning and night after cleansing but before moisturizing. A pea-sized amount is enough for the whole face. I like to press it in gently and let it sit for a minute before going in with my moisturizer.

Performance & Personal Opinion

Okay, so full disclosure: I don’t have super sensitive skin. But in winter, or when I get a little too excited with exfoliation (we’ve all been there), my skin can get irritated, tight, and just generally pissed off.

That’s when I need something that calms everything down without making me feel like I’m layering my face in heavy, suffocating creams. And The INKEY List Ectoin Hydro-Barrier Serum? It helps.

This is one of those serums doesn’t feel like it’s doing something dramatic in the moment, but when I wake up the next day, my skin looks calmer, plumper, and just… healthier.

On those days when my skin feels dry or over-exfoliated, this makes a noticeable difference. The redness is less intense and that tight itchy feeling is gone.

Would I use it every day? Maybe not. My skin doesn’t always need that level of barrier support. But it’s one of those products I love having on hand for when my skin freaks out. Plus, at this price point, it’s a no-brainer.
