proactiv complexion perfecting hydrator review

If you’ve ever had acne, you know the annoying dilemma: you need a moisturizer that keep pores clear, but use harsh actives on a daily basis and suddenly your face is dry, flaky, and somehow STILL breaking out. Fun. Proactiv Complexion Perfecting Hydrator is supposed to tackle both sides of the problem. It’s a moisturiser with 0.5% salicylic acid, so you can hydrate your skin while keeping those pesky clogged pores at bay. At least, that’s the idea. But 0.5% salicylic acid isn’t exactly a lot, and a moisturiser can only do so much for acne. In this Proactiv Complexion Perfecting Hydrator review, I’ll share whether this is indeed the best moisturizer for acne-prone skin and whether you should add it to your skincare routine:

Key Ingredients In Proactiv Complexion Perfecting Hydrator: What Makes It Work?

0.5% SALICYLIC ACID

Salicylic acid (beta hydroxy acid) is the only ingredient here that’s actually doing something about clogged pores and acne. It’s a BHA that helps get rid of the dead cells that build up and contribute to blackheads and whiteheads. It also helps prevent and treat acne by removing dead skin cells. But there’s a catch: there’s only 0.5% here. That’s something, but it’s hardly an acne-busting powerhouse either. You’d need at least 2% to see results fast. But then this is a moisturiser, not an exfoliant, and 0.5% is a safer concentration for daily use. It can cause dryness, peeling and irritation, although at this concentration, that’s less of a worry.

DIMETHICONE

Dimethicone is basically here to make your skin softer and stop moisture escaping. It’s a silicone that forms a lightweight barrier on the skin, reducing water loss without smothering your face under something as heavy as petrolatum. And that’s actually a smart addition here. You’re putting an exfoliating acid in a moisturiser, so adding something that helps offset dryness makes sense. Just don’t expect anything more exciting from it. Dimethicone isn’t treating your acne, unclogging your pores or transforming your skin. It just fills in the nooks and crannies of your skin, so fine lines and pores look smaller. In case you’re wondering, it’s not comedogenic either.

GLYCERIN

Good old glycerin. Cheap, boring and more useful than half the fancy crap skincare brands get excited about. It’s a powerful humectant, so its job here is simple: help your skin hold onto water. One double-blind study found that a cream containing 20% glycerin significantly increased hydration after 10 days. Another randomized study found glycerin increased skin hydration, while petrolatum did more of the heavy lifting when it came to reducing water loss.

Texture

This is the kind of texture oily skin usually gets along with. It’s lightweight, smooth, spreads easily and sinks in pretty quickly without leaving your face covered in grease.  But it’s not going to make dry skin happy. That’s ok. If your skin doesn’t produce excess oil or you don’t have acne blemishes, this isn’t for you anyway.

Fragrance

Yep, it has fragrance. The scent is pretty subtle, so you’re not walking around smelling like a perfume counter. Still, why put fragrance in an acne moisturiser at all? It does absolutely nothing for your skin and can irritate sensitive skin. I could happily do without it.

How To Use It

This is a leave-on moisturiser, so apply a thin layer after cleansing and leave it alone. Because you’re getting salicylic acid here too, don’t go overboard thinking more = fewer pimples. If your skin starts getting dry or peeling, cut back. You can apply it on the entire face, just make sure to avoid the eye area (if it gets into then, rinse eyes quickly). And, of course, it’s for external use only.

Packaging

You get a basic squeeze tube. Nothing sexy, but who cares? It does the job, it’s easy to use and you don’t have to stick your fingers into a jar every time you moisturise. I’ll take practical over pretty any day.

Performance & Personal Opinion

I have mixed feelings about Proactiv Complexion Perfecting Hydrator. On the one hand, I like the idea. Acne-prone skin needs moisture too, and pairing glycerin and dimethicone with salicylic acid makes sense. But let’s not get carried away. There’s only 0.5% salicylic acid here. It’ll give clogged pores a helping hand, but if you’re dealing with stubborn blackheads and breakouts, I wouldn’t expect this to clear them on its own. Still, dimethicone can blur out skin, minimizing the appearance of pores.

The moisturising side isn’t blowing me away either. It’s lightweight and makes skin feel smoother and softer without piling on the grease, which is great if you’re oily. But dry or dehydrated skin? You’ll probably be begging for something more. That’s the problem with trying to make one product do two jobs. Proactiv Complexion Perfecting Hydrator is an okay moisturiser and a very mild salicylic acid treatment, but it doesn’t excel at either. Personally, I’d rather use a proper salicylic acid exfoliant and a moisturiser that gives my skin exactly as much moisture as it needs.

Who Should Use This?

  • If you have oily or combination skin that’s prone to clogged pores and the occasional breakout, this is made for you.
  • Dry skin? I’d skip it. It’s just not moisturising enough.
  • If you’re dealing with stubborn acne, don’t expect this to replace a proper acne treatment either.

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

It’s a decent product, but I wouldn’t rush out to buy it. The lightweight texture is lovely for oily skin and the addition of salicylic acid is a nice bonus if clogged pores are an issue. But that’s exactly what it is: a bonus. At only 0.5%, you’re not getting a powerhouse salicylic acid treatment, and the moisturising side isn’t impressive enough for drier skin either. I’d rather spend my money on a good moisturiser and, if I need it, use a separate salicylic acid treatment that can actually do the heavy lifting.
