blue concealer guide

We’ve finally come to the last instalment on colour corrective concealers. We have already seen what pink, orange, yellow and purple concealers do and how to use them, so what’s there left to talk about?

Blue concealers of course! They are kinda new on the market and I admit I did do a double take the first time I saw them, wondering what on earth blue concealer could possibly be used for?

As it turns out it’s pretty handy for those girls who use fake tan a lot…

So… What Even Is Blue Concealer?

Blue concealer is basically a colour corrector that uses blue pigment to cancel out unwanted tones (usually warm, orangey ones). It can come in a stick, a cream, a liquid, but the point is, it’s not like your regular concealer that’s trying to hide stuff. This one’s here to fix the undertone drama before you even put on foundation.

It’s kind of like a behind-the-scenes fixer. You pop it on under your makeup, it does its quiet little job of neutralising weird patches or orange streaks, and then your foundation sits on top looking all even and flawless like nothing ever happened. Total unsung hero moment.

Why Is Blue Concealer Blue?

Ok, let’s nerd out for a sec. Ever heard of the colour wheel? If not, let me break it down. Colours that sit opposite each other on the wheel cancel each other out. That’s why green cancels red, purple cancels yellow, and yes, blue cancels orange.

So when your fake tan turns a little too oompa-loompa, or your skin has weird orangey undertones in certain lighting, a swipe of blue concealer neutralises that brassiness. It tones it down so your skin looks more balanced and less like you lost a fight with a bottle of self-tanner.

What Are The Benefits Of Blue Concealer?

Blue concealers do two very important jobs:

1. Blue Concealers Reduce Fake Tan Disasters

Did your self tanner gave your skin an unattractive orange color? Or maybe the color’s ok but application was patchy and now some parts of your skin are darker than others? Stop panicking and swipe a blue concealer on the affected areas instead. Blue is the opposite of orange on the color wheel and as such, it can counteract and neutralize orange tones in the skin caused by self-tanners. And it goes without saying that if you spent too much time in the sun and got a bad tan, you can still use blue concealer to reduce its appearance.

2. Blue Concealers Counteract Redness And Dark Circles

Although I prefer green concealers to counteract any red patches you may have on you skin (think pimples or rosacea), blue is another valid option that does the job well. And if you have dark skin, this shade will also help you to hide dark circles.

What Skin Tones Should Use Blue Concealer?

This is one of those questions people are always Googling – because not every colour corrector works for every skin tone. So here’s the tea.

  • If you have fair to medium skin and you’ve got a patchy or orangey fake tan situation going on, blue concealer is your best friend.
  • If you have medium to deep skin and you’re dealing with dark under-eye circles that lean reddish or orangey, blue concealer can also help tone those down without going ashy.
  • Got olive undertones? You might find blue concealer super helpful for balancing out the warm tones in your skin if you’re using a foundation that’s a tad too yellow or golden.

Basically, it’s not a one-size-fits-all product, but it is more versatile than it looks. Especially once you know what you’re using it for.

Where Do You Apply Blue Concealer?

This depends on what you’re trying to fix:

  • Fake tan fix: Apply it anywhere the tan is too orange or too dark (usually around the hands, elbows, knees, ankles, or jawline).
  • Under-eyes: If your dark circles are reddish or warm-toned, lightly dab blue concealer before applying your regular concealer.
  • Around the mouth or nose: Some people get discoloration in these areas, especially if their foundation pulls too warm.

PRO TIP: Less is more. You’re not painting your face blue, you’re just lightly cancelling out undertones. Use a small brush or your finger and blend it well before adding foundation on top.

Pro Tips for Using Blue Concealer Like a Makeup Artist

  • Start small: It’s always easier to add more than to take product away.
  • Use a damp sponge: Especially if you’re applying it to larger areas like the chest or neck to correct fake tan.
  • Blend before foundation: Always apply your blue concealer first, then go over with foundation. It’s a corrector, not a cover-up.
  • Set it properly: Use a translucent setting powder if you’re wearing it all day, especially on oily skin or in humid weather.

Can You Use Blue Concealer Every Day?

Totally, if you need it! If you wear self-tanner regularly or struggle with uneven skin tone, there’s nothing wrong with making blue concealer part of your daily makeup routine. That said, if you only self-tan occasionally or only get the odd orangey patch now and then, it might be more of a “use when needed” kind of product.

Also worth noting: because blue concealer is so pigmented, you want to make sure it doesn’t peek through your foundation. Always test it out first to make sure it plays nicely with the rest of your products.

What Should You Look for in a Blue Concealer?

Alright, if you’re thinking of grabbing one, here’s what to look out for so you don’t end up with something that sits in the back of your drawer forever:

  • Blends like butter: No one has time to wrestle with a stiff formula. You want it creamy, smooth, and easy to blend, otherwise it’s just gonna sit there and look weird under your makeup.
  • Pigmented but not too pigmented: Yes, we want it to cancel out orange, not be blue on your face. If it’s giving full-on Avatar vibes, it’s a no.
  • Actually stays put: Especially if you’re using it on areas like under your eyes or around your mouth where makeup tends to slide off by lunchtime. Long-wear formulas are your friend.
  • Doesn’t fight with your foundation: Some concealers just don’t get along with certain base products and start doing that weird patchy thing. Always test it with your usual foundation before you commit.

Think of it like dating. You want something low-effort, dependable, and doesn’t act up when you’re getting ready for something important.
