What if you could get your hands on Tretinoin without ever setting foot in a doctor’s office? It’s not wishful thinking. It’s a reality. Thank Curology for that. This online start-up is a lazy girl’s skincare dream. It gives you access to prescription treatments you just can’t pick up at Sephora.
That’s right. No more settling for over-the-counter products that too often can’t rid you of acne or dark spots. No more taking time off your busy schedule to see a dermatologist. No more spending a small fortune on their high fees and the medications they recommend.
Curology has made the world of prescription skincare accessible, convenient and affordable for everyone. But… is that too good to be true? Does Curology work? Yes, it can. Curology products contain proven ingredients like Tretinoin, Azelaic Acid, and Clindamycin that can help treat acne, dark spots, and wrinkles. But don’t expect overnight miracles. Results take time, the ingredients can be irritating, and Curology isn’t powerful enough to tackle every skin problem. The trick is knowing whether it’s right for yours. Here’s everything you need to know about Curology skincare:
Curology Review: My Verdict
My rating: 4/5
Best for: People struggling with stubborn acne, dark spots, and early signs of ageing who want convenient access to prescription skincare.
Skip it if: You need treatment for a severe or complicated skin condition, or you can already get affordable prescription skincare elsewhere.
What I like: Evidence-backed ingredients, access to a licensed dermatology provider, adjustable formulas, and the convenience of home delivery.
What I don’t: The customisation isn’t as special as it sounds, treatments can be irritating, and you may pay more than you would for generic prescriptions.
Bottom line: Curology is a convenient way to get your hands on powerful skincare ingredients that really work. But it’s the prescription ingredients doing the heavy lifting, not the customisation. Whether it’s worth your money depends on what your skin needs and how much you’d pay for treatment elsewhere.

How I Evaluated Curology
Fancy packaging and glowing testimonials don’t impress me. I want to know what’s inside the bottle, whether those ingredients have any scientific evidence behind them, and whether you’re getting a good deal. So, I’ve looked at Curology from four angles:
| WHAT I’M EVALUATING | WHAT REALLY MATTERS |
|---|---|
| Effectiveness | Do the ingredients have clinical evidence behind them? |
| Customisation | Does personalisation offer any meaningful benefit? |
| Safety | What are the side effects, and how are they managed? |
| Value for money | What are you paying for, and can you get the same benefits for less? |
What Is Curology?
Curology is an online service that customises prescription-strength skincare for you. That’s right. It allows you to get your hands on tretinoin, azelaic acid and all the other goodies you’d usually need a prescription for – for a fraction of the cost, too.
It’s all legit. Each formula is created by a licensed healthcare provider based on your skin conditions and needs. If you don’t like it or it’s not working as well as you thought, you can always ask them to tweak the formula. How awesome is that? Curology started by focusing on acne, and has since expanded to treat dark spots and rosacea too.

How Does Curology Work?
Here’s how Curology works:
- You fill in a questionnaire that helps Curology determine your skin’s needs. They’ll ask you about your skin type and problems, your medical history and any allergies you have, your lifestyle habits, and what other treatments you’ve tried in the past.
- You submit a few photos of your skin so they can examine it and have a better idea of what you’re dealing with.
- A dermatologist or nurse practitioner emails you to discuss your concerns, create your prescription, and give you basic diet and lifestyle advice (you know, eating less sugar and process food, for example).
- You receive your prescription in the mail. How convenient is that?
- You use their prescription products and, if you have any concerns or requests, you can get back in touch so they can help you tweak things.
Easy, isn’t it?

What’s A Typical Curology Prescription For Acne Like?
A typical Curology acne prescription (yes, lots of people end up using the same formula!) contains:
- 0.018% Tretinoin: A powerful form of Vitamin A that boosts collagen production, speeds up cellular turnover (the skin’s exfoliating process) and fights free radicals. It reduces both acne and wrinkles.
- 8% Azelaic Acid: Made by the good bacteria that live on your skin, it kills acne-causing bacteria, soothes inflammation, and even helps fade away dark spots.
- 1% Clindamycin: A topical antibiotic that targets P.Acnes, the bacteria that gives you acne.
That’s one powerful cocktail that can definitely help you get rid of your acne. Seriously, if this stuff doesn’t work, your only option is Accutane (FYI, you still need to see a dermatologist for that).
How long does it take to work? Don’t expect your acne to disappear overnight. Prescription treatments like Tretinoin typically take 8–12 weeks to show noticeable improvements, sometimes longer. You may even experience some dryness, irritation, or an initial breakout before your skin starts looking better. And if your formula isn’t working for you, Curology can adjust it.

What’s A Typical Curology Prescription For Wrinkles And Dark Spots?
A typical Curology prescription for wrinkles and dark spots contains:
- 5% of a Vitamin C derivative: Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights wrinkles, boosts collagen, and brightens the skin tone.
- 0.04% Tretinoin: A powerful form of Vitamin A that boosts collagen production, speeds up cellular turnover (the skin’s exfoliating process) and fights free radicals. It reduces both acne and wrinkles.
- 4% Niacinamide: A form of Vitamin B3 that hydrates skin, soothes irritations, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots, and even helps with acne.
The star of the show here is Tretinoin. Vitamin C derivatives and niacinamide are supporting acts you can get OTC, too. How long does it take to work? Again, don’t expect those wrinkles and dark spots to disappear overnight. Tretinoin can start improving fine lines after 3–6 months, but deeper wrinkles won’t magically vanish. Dark spots may begin fading within 8–12 weeks, although stubborn pigmentation can take several months longer. And here’s the catch: you need to keep using your treatment consistently to maintain the results.

How Customised Are Curology Customised Prescriptions?
I get it. If you’re paying for a customised skincare product, you want it to be 100% unique to you. But that’s not how it works. Lots of people who use Curology will get the exact same formula. WTH?
Here’s the deal: there’s only a limited amount of actives that really works against wrinkles, acne, and dark spots. When you use Curology, you’re paying for that active ingredient that you usually wouldn’t be able to get your hands on. Everything else is a bonus.
It doesn’t make sense to have 1000 unique formulas when the same one will do for most people. Sure, they may add more of an emollient or less of a thickener, but that’s not the stuff that gives you results. Plus, you can always further tweak the formula to make it suit your skin type better. Because you never know how well something works for you until you try it.
What Are The Benefits Of Using Curology?
Did I mention you get prescription-strength skincare without the hassle of seeing a dermatologist? Curology is:
- Easy: It takes just a few minutes to fill in the forms and get a prescription.
- Convenient: The prescription is delivered right to your door. No need to go to a pharmacy.
- Effective: Each prescription uses strong actives that really work to treat acne, wrinkles, and dark spots.
- Affordable: It’s definitely less expensive than seeing a dermatologist on a regular basis.
- Legit: Your prescription is created by a medical health care professional, so you’re in good hands.
- Tweakable: If something’s not working well for you, you can ask them to tweak it.
- Beautiful: The packaging is kinda cute – not your usual boring medical-like packaging.
I totally see why more women (and men) are going for this route. Customised skincare is definitely the future.

What’s The Problem With Curology?
There’s a reason why Tretinoin & co are available by prescription only. They’re harsh AF. Tretinoin is one of the worst culprit. It’s pretty much the only thing that reduces wrinkles and one of the very few that treat acne, but the results come at a cost. Dryness. Irritation. Increased skin sensitivity. Risk of sun damage even (if you’re not religious with sunscreen).
That’s why 1/3 of Curology patients need to tweak their prescription. The initial dose was TOO harsh for them, giving them all kinds of side effects. They had to be toned down a notch or two so they could better tolerate them. If Curology doesn’t get it right on the first try, don’t despair. Sometimes, it takes three or four tries to get the right balance.
Who Is Curology For?
If you’ve tried every OTC treatment, but your acne won’t disappear and your dark spots are getting worse, Curology may be worth a try. Especially if you don’t have the money to see a dermatologist on a regular basis.
There’s only so much skincare products can do. Anything that’s sold OTC needs to be gentle or who knows what trouble it may cause in the wrong hands! At some point, you need to upgrade to prescription skincare. Curology is a good way to get your foot in the water and get started with more powerful treatments.

Who Is Curology Not For?
Let’s be clear. Curology can’t completely replace a dermatologist. For starters, Curology is only for mild to moderate acne, wrinkles, and dark spots. If you’re dealing with a bad rash of a suspicious mole, you still need to see a dermatologist.
Curology also doesn’t work for everyone. If your acne is really severe, a combination of Azelaic Acid, Tretinoin, and Clindamycin may not be enough to heal it completely. If that’s the case, you’ll need an oral medication like Accutane or spironolactone. Or maybe you need to supplement with blue light therapy. All things you need to see a dermatologist for. Good news: if you ever reach that stage, Curology will let you know.
P.S. If you have sensitive skin, you’re better off seeing a dermatologist. Curology’s prescriptions will almost certainly irritate your skin like hell. Don’t risk it!

Is Curology Worth The Money?
Getting prescription skincare delivered to your door without paying a fortune in dermatologist fees sounds like a pretty sweet deal. But how much does Curology actually cost? Here’s what you’ll pay:
- Custom Formula Rx, your personalised prescription with up to three active ingredients, is $29.95 a month.
- The Curology Set for acne is $59.90 a month. It includes your custom formula and the daily primer.
- First-month trial ($5.45 shipping and handling), so you can try the products before deciding to commit to the monthly subscription.
There’s no minimum commitment. You can cancel before your next order is processed.
Is the whole set worth the extra money, though? That depends on what you’re already using. Curology’s cleanser and moisturisers are basic for a reason. When you’re using powerful prescription ingredients that can leave your skin dry, flaky, and irritated, the last thing you need is to throw more potent actives into the mix. Your cleanser and moisturiser should keep your skin clean, hydrated, and happy. Not start another fight with it. And that’s exactly what Curology’s do.
But here’s the thing: you don’t need to buy them from Curology. If you already have a gentle cleanser and moisturiser that work well with your prescription, keep them. Why spend more money fixing something that isn’t broken?
What about the prescription itself? Is that worth the money? Now we’re talking. For around $30 a month, you get access to prescription-strength ingredients, a dermatology provider who can help you choose the right treatment, and the option to adjust your formula if your skin isn’t cooperating. Sure, you could get generic Tretinoin elsewhere. But Curology saves you the hassle of arranging appointments, and you can get several active ingredients in one bottle.
Is Curology Cleanser Any Good?
Curology now offers two cleansers:
- Gentle Cleanser:Â A lightweight, lightly foaming gel cleanser that removes dirt and excess oil without stripping your skin. Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin.
- Hydro+ Foaming Gel Cleanser:Â A more hydrating option with hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, aloe vera, and squalane to help cleanse your skin without leaving it feeling tight and dry.
Both are designed to do one job: clean your skin without irritating it. And that’s exactly what you want when you’re using prescription treatments that can already leave your skin dry, flaky, and sensitive. No need to add a harsh cleanser to the mix. But don’t expect either to magically dissolve a full face of waterproof makeup. You may still need a separate makeup remover first.
My verdict? They’re sensible choices if your current cleanser leaves your skin feeling like sandpaper. But if you already have a gentle cleanser that does the job, keep it. Your skin doesn’t care whether the cleanser has Curology written on the bottle.

Is Curology Moisturiser Any Good?
Curology now offers three regular moisturisers:
- Gel Moisturizer:Â A lightweight, oil-free formula with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and silicones that hydrate skin without leaving a greasy residue. A good option for oily and acne-prone skin.
- Cream Moisturizer:Â A richer cream with shea butter, squalane, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid to moisturise dry skin and help protect its moisture barrier.
- Hydro+ Gel-Cream Moisturizer:Â A newer formula with hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, ectoin, and peptides. It focuses on keeping skin hydrated and soothing dryness without a heavy, greasy texture.
Why all this focus on moisture? Simple. Prescription ingredients like Tretinoin can be harsh AF. Dryness, flaking, irritation… your skin has enough to deal with without you throwing a dozen more actives at it. That’s why Curology’s moisturisers make sense. The Gel and Cream versions focus on hydration and keeping your skin barrier happy, while Hydro+ adds a few extra ingredients for hydration and soothing.
But do you actually need one? Not necessarily. If you already have a moisturiser you love, and it doesn’t contain harsh actives that could make irritation worse, stick with it. You don’t need an entirely new skincare routine just because you’ve started using Curology. If your current moisturiser isn’t cutting it anymore, though, these are all good options. Pick the texture and level of moisture your skin needs, not the one with the longest ingredient list.

How To Get The Most Out Of Your Curology Prescription
Curology’s prescriptions are harsh. Here’s how to get all their benefits without the nasty side effects:
- Start slowly: Use fewer actives in smaller doses to get your skin time to get used to them. You can always tweak them and up their power when your skin can tolerate them better.
- Use it every other night: Daily use is a sure recipe for dryness and irritation – especially if you’ve just started out or have increased your dose significantly. Give your skin a break in between.
- Use after serums but before moisturiser: It’s true active ingredients penetrate better when you apply them as close to freshly cleansed skin as possible. But if you’re just starting out, that may be too harsh. When you apply them after serums, you tone down the harshness a notch or two.
- Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise: Always apply a good moisturiser after your prescription. If that’s not enough, add a hylauoric acid serum, too. If you have dry skin, you can consider a facial oil instead.
- Don’t skip sunscreen: Tretinoin & co make skin more prone to sun damage. You could use Curology every day and it would all be for nothing!

What Happens When You Stop Using Curology?
Bad news: Curology isn’t a permanent fix for acne, wrinkles, or dark spots. Stop using it, and some of those pesky skin problems may come back. That’s because prescription ingredients like Tretinoin don’t cure acne or stop skin ageing. They help keep them under control. Stop using them, and your skin gradually returns to doing its own thing. Does that mean you’ll lose all your results? Not necessarily.
- Acne:Â If your skin is still prone to clogged pores and breakouts, your acne may return once you stop treatment. It won’t necessarily happen overnight, though.
- Dark spots:Â The pigmentation you’ve faded won’t automatically come back. But if the underlying cause is still there (think sun exposure or recurring acne) new spots can appear.
- Wrinkles:Â Your skin won’t suddenly age ten years the moment you stop Tretinoin. But you’ll lose its ongoing benefits, and fine lines and wrinkles will continue to develop naturally.
And no, your skin doesn’t become addicted to Curology. There’s no skincare withdrawal drama here. You’re simply removing the ingredients that were helping keep your skin concerns in check.
The Bottom Line
Customised skincare like Curology is the future of skincare. If you’ve outgrown what OTC products can do for you but aren’t ready to see a dermatologist yet, Curology is the way to go. But it can’t replace a dermatologist completely. If you have very severe skin problems, a good old derm is still the best option.
I’ve been using Curology for almost a year now and really enjoy it. My formula contains 0.05% tretinoin, 4% niacinamide, and
5% azelaic acid. I use it for anti-aging and sunspots. I tried so many very good retinols, including the PTR PM Retinol Serum and nothing ever made a difference. Nothing is a miracle, but Curology has improved the texture, dark spots, firmness & elasticity, and wrinkles, better than anything else I’ve used!
Kathleen, it depends on what your Curology prescription contains. If it already has one exfoliant and vitamin c, you don’t need separate products with these ingredients.
If you use curology every other night for anti-aging, do you also use an exfoliator? If yes, every night or just on the alternate nights when you don’t use the curology product. And would you continue to use a vitamin c serum in the morning, even though the curology product also has vitamin c? Thanks!
