best skinceuticals vitamin c serum

What’s the best Skinceuticals Vitamin C serum? CE Ferulic is the most famous. But did you know that Skinceuticals makes FIVE more?! Like, why does a brand need to make that many different Vitamin C serums… especially when CE Ferulic is the gold standard? Mmm… Should you stick to that one or go with one of the (cheaper) alternatives the brand makes? I’ve compared all Skinceuticals Vitamin C serums to find out who the winner is. But first…

Why Should You Use Vitamin C?

Vitamin C is an antiaging superstar. This powerful antioxidant fights premature aging in 3 ways:

  • Antioxidant: It destroys free radicals before they can give you wrinkles and dark spots
  • Firming: It boosts collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm and elastic
  • Brightening: It fades away dark spots and makes the complexion glow

Just a warning: L-Ascorbic Acid, the pure form of vitamin C, does these jobs well BUT it can be irritating. If you’ve got sensitive skin, stick to low doses (or go with a derivative).

Skinceuticals CF Ferulic

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic ($185.00)

Formula: Skinceuticals CE Ferulic was the first serum to ever use the combination of 15% L-Ascorbic acid (the pure form of vitamin C), 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid. These antioxidants work together to make one another more effective and destroy more free radicals. Plus, they boost the protection of your sunscreen, too. I recommend all my clients to use this combination because it’s the most studied for anti-aging and we know works. Why reinvent the wheel?

Performance: The serum has a lightweight, slightly tacky texture that absorbs easily. Sadly, it smells. In case you’re wondering, it IS fragrance-free. But some of the ingredients (*cough* ferulic acid *cough*) don’t smell nice without a fragrance to cover them up. If that doesn’t put them off, this is the best Skinceuticals Vitamin C serum to prevent the premature signs of aging (think wrinkles) and fade away dark spots.

Who should use it?: Most suitable for dry skin types, but anyone who wants to prevent premature aging can use it (unless your skin is too sensitive to tolerate this much vitamin C).

skinceuticals phloretin cf

Skinceuticals Phloretin CF with Ferulic Acid ($185.00)

Formula: This baby uses a lower concentration (10%) of L-Ascorbic Acid, paired with 2% phloretin and 0.5% ferulic acid (vitamin E is out). Phloretin is an antioxidant found in apples that boosts the effectiveness of vitamin C and helps protect skin from UV rays. One study shows that vitamin C + phloretin + ferulic acid + vitamin C (CPF) works just like vitamin C + vitamin E + ferulic acid (CEF). BUT, CEF is the most studied combo of the two, so it has way more proof to back up its effectiveness. Plus, CEF has a higher concentration of Vitamin C, which makes it more effective for dark spots (provided your skin can handle it).

Performance: Skinceuticals Phloretin CF with Ferulic Acid has a lightweight, fast-absorbing texture. It’s good at preventing the premature signs of aging, including wrinkles and dark spots. It just takes longer to fade them. But, you’ll notice an instant glow from using this.

Who should use it?: Combo and oily skin types who want to prevent premature aging. Especially if your skin is sensitive. If 15% L-Ascorbic Acid irritates your skin, but you’re not happy using a derivative (forget what brands say, there’s just no proof they work as well), this is a good compromise.

Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Gel

Skinceuticals Phloretin CF Gel ($185.00)

Formula: Just like the serum versions, the active ingredients are the same: 10% L-Ascorbic Acid (the pure form of Vitamin C), 2% phloretin and 0.5% ferulic acid. Plus, alcohol to thin the texture and silicones to fill in fine lines and wrinkles.

Performance: When it comes to anti-aging, it works pretty much the same as well. It helps to fade away dark spots and slow down the formation of wrinkles. Plus, the silicones in the formula fill in fine lines and wrinkles, so they look smaller to the naked eye. The main different is the texture: a light, non-sticky gel.

Who should use it?: Combo to oily skin that needs anti-aging prevention. It’s also suitable for sensitive skin. If you prefer a gel to a thin serum, go with this.

Skinceuticals Serum 10

Skinceuticals Serum 10 ($85.00)

Formula: 10% L-Ascorbic Acid (the pure form of Vitamin C), 0.2% ferulic acid + humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate skin. They also make the formula gentler, so your skin can better tolerate Vitamin C.

Performance: Like all fragrance-free serums with ferulic acid, this smells funky. It hasn’t gone bad, it’s just the natural smell of the ingredient. While Vitamin C fights off the free radicals that form wrinkles prematurely, hyaluronic acid plumps up the fine lines you already have, so they look smaller to the naked eye. Both give your skin a lovely glow.

Who should use it?: Sensitive skin who tolerates a low % of Vitamin C and needs the extra hydration to tolerate this active.

Skinceuticals C + AHA

Skinceuticals C + AHA ($145.00)

Formula: 15% L-Ascorbic Acid + Glycolic and lactic acid to exfoliate, smoothen and brighten skin.

Performance: I have mixed feelings on this serum. On the one hand, it’s great at brightening the skin. If you have dark spots, this combination will fade them faster than Vitamin C alone. Plus, it makes skin very smoother. And I can see the appeal of using both ingredients together and save time in your skincare routine. The catch? One: I prefer to use Vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen because it boosts its effectiveness. But glycolic and lactic acids are best used at night because (like all exfoliants), by eliminating extra layers of dead cells, make skin more prone to sun damage. And, exfoliation isn’t a daily thing. I recommend you use this only 3 nights a week, so there are days when you wouldn’t use Vitamin C at all. No bueno. So yeah, the serum works great. I just prefer a formula I can use daily under sunscreen. Oh, the texture is water-like and yes, it stings a little!

Who should use it?: If you havedry, sun-damaged skin and want to fade your dark spots faster, this is worth a go.

skinceuticals silymarin cf

Skinceuticals Silymarin CF ($145.00)

Formula: 15% L-Ascorbic Acid + 0.5% Ferulic Acid + 0.5 Silymarin (as Vitamin E replacement). According to a 2019 study, Silymarin has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that fight free radicals and boost protection from UVB rays. So it works. With just don’t know yet if it works better than Vitamin E in the formula. Oh, and it has 0.5% Salicylic acid to provide mild exfoliation.

Performance: This lightweight serum helps fight off the free radicals that give you premature winkles and brightness skin. It’s less hydrating than the other serums, but it does provide mild exfoliation. In higher concentrations, salicylic acid unclogs pores and treats acne. This will have an effect, just expect it to work slowly. Oh, as all Skinceuticals Vitamin C serum, it smells a bit weird – just because there’s nothing to mask the natural smell of the ingredients.

Who should use it?: Combination and oily skin that’s blemish-prone.

What’s The Best Skinceuticals Vitamin C Serum?

Skinceuticals CE Ferulic wins hands down. It has the most effective antioxidant combo to fight premature aging and keep wrinkles away from your face for longer. If your skin is sensitive and can’t tolerate it, go with Serum 10. I’d give the other serums a go only if you can’t stand the texture/smell of CEF Ferulic.
