Korean Skincare For Pores And Blackheads

What’s the best Korean skincare for pores and blackheads? A quick online search will turn up a whole lost of amazing products – from cleansers to moisturisers and face masks – that can shrink pores and get rid of blackheads. But… most of them don’t really work. Not for this anyway. There are only a couple of ingredients that can treat these concerns. In this article, I’ll walk you through the active ingredients you need to add to your Korean skincare routine and recommend you the best products for the job. Let’s get started:

What Causes Large Pores And Blackheads?

Large pores and blackheads are two different skin concerns, but they have a common cause: clogged pores. The size of your pores is genetically determined, so you can’t shrink it. Annoying I know. BUT, when your sebaceous glands go into overdrive and increase oil production, the excess sebum gets stuck in the pores where it mixes with dead skin cells and clogs pores. These clogs now swell up the pores, so they look bigger. Plus, when those clogs get so big, they reach the opening of the pore, their tip turns back. Hello blackheads!

What Really Works To Shrink Pores And Clear Blackheads?

It therefore follows that if you unclog pores, you can get rid of blackheads and bring your pores back to their original size. The only ingredient that can do is salicylic acid. Also known as BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid), this oil-soluble exfoliant gets inside your pores and unclogs them from within. While it’s at it, it also removes dead cells from the surface of your skin, so they don’t end up in your pores and clog them up again.

Here’s the issue with Korean skincare though: a lot of Korean toners do not use salicylic acid. They use derivates that don’t really work as well. Or lower concentrations of salicylic acid than you’d find in Western toners. So, you’ll get some gentle exfoliation, but they won’t do as much for your pores and blackheads as Western toners would. That’s just a fact. If you’re ok with this, here are the best products ti add to your Korean skin care routine:

How To Prevent Clogged Pores In The First Place

There are two types of ingredients that prevent clogged pores: ingredients that remove dead cells from your skin and ingredients that regulate oil production. Let’s take a closer look at them:

  • Ingredients that provide gentle exfoliation or speed up cellular turnover (the skin’s natural exfoliation process), like alpha hydroxy acids (think glycolic acid and lactic acid) and retinoids can prevent blackheads and shrink pores by preventing dead cells from clogging them up in the first place. AND, if you’re using salicylic acid, you don’t need another exfoliant. You may still want to add a retinoid into your routine for anti-aging, but everyhing else? Nope. Not needed. Using two or more exfoliants in your skincare routine isn’t going to help a clogged pore. It’s just going to irritate your skin.
  • Cleansers (including double cleansing) can only remove excess oil from the skin, which helps prevent clogged pores. But they do nothing to remove those you already have.
  • Niacinamide. It inhibits the activity of the enzyme 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that stimulates sebum production. Less DHT → less oil → smaller pores and fewer blackheads.
  • Clay masks: These too remove excess oil so it doesn’t get stuck into your pores and clogs them up. They can be drying for dry skin and sensitive skin though.

Best Korean Skincare Products To Reduce The Appearance Of Pores And Treat Blackheads

Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner ($17.10)

This gentle toner does contain salicylic acid, 0.5% of it. It really is the highest concentration allowed in Korean products and… it’s super gentle. It will do something to clear pores, so they look smaller. It will even help you remove blackheads. BUT, it works very slowly. If you’re ok with that, you’ll like the lightweight texture that sinks in quickly without leaving a greasy residue behind. It does the job without peeling or causing skin irritation. Plus, the addition of aloe and snail mucin means it hydrates skin and leaves it softer and smoother without adding more oil to it, which is the last thing oily skin (the type more prone to large pores and blackheads) needs. I usually don’t recommend daily use for an exfoliant, but this is so gentle, you may need it for faster results (as long as you don’t have sensitive skin – that’ll backfire).

Available at: SokoglamStylevana, and Yes Style

Key Ingredients: Aloe vera, salicylic acid, snail secretion filtrate (snail mucin).

Benefits: Soothes, hydrates, and gently exfoliates.

Cons: Too gentle if you want hardcore exfoliation, subtle results on acne or texture.

Skin Types: Sensitive, dry, normal, combination skin.

Fragrance-Free: Yes.

Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Refreshing Toner ($19.25)

This refreshing toner has a watery, slightly tacky texture that sinks in quickly. The tacky bit disappears pretty fast, but you’ll feel it at first. Just mentioning it, in case it bothers you. It has a low concentration of salicylic acid to unclog pores and a larger concentration of glycolic acid to remove dead cells from the surface of your skin and give you smooth skin texture and a glass skin glow. This is more a toner for dry skin that experiences a few blackheads than for oily, acne-prone skin that deals with breakouts on a daily basis.

Available at: Beauty BaySuperdrug, and Yes Style

Active ingredients: Glycolic acid and Salicylic acid.

Benefits: Brightens, hydrates, and helps unclog pores.

Cons: Wish it contained a higher concentration of exfoliating acids.

Skin type: All skin types bar sensitive.

Fragrance-free: Yes.

NATURIUM BHA Liquid Exfoliant 2% ($19.00)

This one is my fave exfoliant on this list. It’s got actual salicylic acid at 2% which is a solid concentration: enough to actually do something for acne-prone skin and clogged pores without disrupting a healthy skin barrier. It’s a liquid so you can control how much you’re using, and it absorbs fast without feeling sticky. Good for oily skin who produces too much oil. There’s not much to say about it. It’s a great formula that can rival Western toners and does what it says on the tin. And that’s exactly what you want.

Available at: BootsSoko GlamSpaceNK and Ulta

Active ingredients: Salicylic acid.

Benefits: Exfoliates skin and unclogs pores.

Cons: Can irritate skin if you abuse it.

Skin type: Oily, acne-prone, and combination skin.

Fragrance-free: Yes.

SOME BY MI Retinol Intense Reactivating Serum ($31.79)

The stars of the show are retinol at 0.1%, its cousin retinal, and niacinamide. While the retinoids speed up cellular turnover, Niacinamide regulates skin’s natural oil production. Together, they fight wrinkles, shrink the appearance of pores, and help prevent blackheads. The texture is slightly viscous, spreads easily, and sits somewhere between a serum and a lightweight lotion. It’s silicone-based, which is not everyone’s favourite. This sits in a glass bottle with a dropper, which looks elegant but isn’t ideal for retinol stability. Keep it away from light and heat. Results are gradual: expect 6+ weeks before you start seeing results.

Available at: Soko GlamSpaceNKStylevanaUlta, and Yes Style

Key Ingredients: Retinol 0.1%, Retinal, Bakuchiol 0.5%, Niacinamide and Centella Asiatica Extract.

Benefits: Gentle retinoid suitable for beginners; anti-aging benefits; helps lighten dark spots; youthful glow.

Cons: Silicone base may cause pilling; glass dropper packaging isn’t ideal for retinol stability.

Skin Types: All skin types, including sensitive. Works well for retinol beginners.

Fragrance-Free: Yes

IOPE Expert Retinol Super Bounce Serum ($49.00)

IOPE has both retinol and granactive retinoid, two forms of Vitamin A that speed up cellular turnover, fight wrinkles, and help treat acne. Plus, squalane and Centella Asiatica to moisturise and soothe skin. This matters because retinoids can disrupt your skin’s natural barrier if you use too much of them. Anything that helps counteract that is welcome. The texture is where this serum is genuinely impressive: a light, silky gel-water that melts into skin instantly with zero stickiness and zero greasy finish.  You can expect anoticeable improvement in skin firmness, texture, and pore appearance with consistent use. For a retinol serum marketed as beginner-friendly, it does actually deliver – though some people with very reactive skin still experience slight redness with more than twice-weekly use.

Available at: Soko Glam and Yes Style

Key Ingredients: Retinol and Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (Granactive Retinoid).

Benefits: Multi-retinoid complex for anti-aging; improved firmness, texture, and pore refinement; lightweight, fast-absorbing texture; well-tolerated for a retinol product.

Cons: Premium price; contains synthetic fragrance.

Skin Types: All skin types, including sensitive. Well-suited for retinol beginners and those who want a meaningful retinol concentration without extreme irritation risk.

Fragrance-Free: No (contains less than 1% synthetic fragrance)

The Bottom Line

There you have it, the right products from Korean beauty that can really do something for pores and blackheads. By all means, add gentle cleansing, clay masks and anything else that your skin needs. But for pores and blackheads, this is what really works. Period.
