clinique face wash reviews

Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild has been around forever and it has the kind of fans who genuinely panic when it goes out of stock. Must be good, right? And yet, if you’re anything like me you’ve been going down the rabbit hole of Clinique face wash reviews trying to figure out whether this is actually worth it. Because let’s face it, we’ve all been through about fifteen gentle cleansers that all promised not to strip your face and then absolutely stripped your face. Does this one deliver? Here’s what you need to know: what’s in it, what those ingredients actually do, and whether the formula holds up to the claims:

Key Ingredients In Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild: What Makes It Work?

OLIVE OIL

Olive oil in a face cleanser, WTH? I know, you think of oils as greasy, but they also remove the grease. Olive oil does most of the cleansing here. It helps to dissolve dirt and makeup while actually leaving skin softer than it found it. It basically does double duty. While most cleaning agents are harsh, olive oil cleanses and moisturises at the same time. Plus, it’s rich in antioxidants too, which help calm any irritation the cleansing process might cause.

CUCUMBER EXTRACT

Yes it sounds like a spa treatment. Stick with me. Cucumber extract contains a bunch of antioxidants and vitamins (C and K) that have real anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. A 2024 study found it can actually inhibit inflammatory responses. It works by blocking an enzyme involved in triggering skin inflammation. In plain terms: when your skin is red, reactive, or just grumpy, cucumber extract helps calm it down. For sensitive skin that flares up easily, it’s a useful thing to have in a cleanser. No catch here either, it’s very well tolerated and not known to irritate anyone.

The Rest Of The Formula & Ingredients

NOTE: The colours indicate the effectiveness of an ingredient. It is ILLEGAL to put toxic and harmful ingredients in skincare products.

  • Green: It’s effective, proven to work, and helps the product do the best possible job for your skin.
  • Yellow: There’s not much proof it works (at least, yet).
  • Red: What is this doing here?!
  • Water\Aqua\Eau: The base everything else dissolves into. Boring, but needed.
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: A lightweight ingredient derived from coconut oil that makes the formula feel smooth on skin and helps it spread evenly. It’s really well tolerated and, unlike pure coconut oil, it doesn’t block pores.
  • Glycerin: Glycerin pulls moisture toward the surface of your skin and keeps it there – even in a rinse-off product, enough of it stays behind to make a real difference.
  • Butylene Glycol: Helps the formula stay fluid and helps deliver other ingredients into the skin. Also has mild moisturising properties.
  • Phenyl Trimethicone: A silicone that gives the formula a slightly silky skin feel when you apply it. It rinses off completely and just makes the cleansing experience feel less harsh on the skin.
  • Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) Extract: Rich in beta-glucan, which has calming anti-inflammatory properties. and supporting the skin’s natural barrier. It’s a great choice for dry skin that needs all the help it can get.
  • Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake: The leftover material after sunflower oil gets pressed out of the seeds. In a cleanser it acts as a mild cleansing agent that helps remove surface debris without being aggressive about it.
  • Dimethicone: Another silicone, this one forms a light protective layer on the skin while you’re washing that helps stop too much moisture escaping. I
  • Sodium Hyaluronate: A form of hyaluronic acid – something your skin naturally produces to stay hydrated. It binds water to the surface of your skin and even in a rinse-off product leaves things feeling a bit more comfortable and plump immediately after washing.
  • Tocopheryl Acetate: A stable form of vitamin E that helps protect both the formula and your skin from damage. A
  • Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate: Derived from liquorice, it’s actually one of the better anti-inflammatory ingredients you’ll find in skincare.
  • Cholesterol: Your skin’s protective barrier is partly made of cholesterol. It keeps the barrier intact and moisture locked in.
  • Sucrose Stearate: It’s a sugar-based surfactant, which means it cleans effectively without the aggression you get from sulphates.
  • Sucrose: Regular sugar, used here as a humectant and skin softener. Draws moisture to the skin and contributes to a slightly smoother texture during application.
  • Caffeine: In skincare it temporarily constricts blood vessels near the skin’s surface, which reduces redness and puffiness. It’s also an antioxidant. In a rinse-off product the effect doesn’t last long, but for skin that looks flushed and irritated after washing, even a brief calming effect is welcome.
  • PPG-20 Methyl Glucose Ether: A moisturising and texture-smoothing ingredient. Helps the formula feel non-tacky and fluid.
  • Urea: More interesting than it sounds. Urea is something your skin actually produces naturally as part of how it holds onto water, and it’s genuinely effective at keeping skin hydrated and soft.
  • Sodium PCA: Another ingredient your skin makes naturally. An excellent humectant that works alongside the glycerin and hyaluronic acid to keep moisture levels stable during and after cleansing.
  • Linoleic Acid: A fatty acid that’s an essential building block of your skin’s protective barrier. Skin that’s low in linoleic acid tends to be dry and easily compromised. Including it in a cleanser is a thoughtful way to give the barrier back something cleansing takes away.
  • Propylene Glycol Dicaprate: A light emollient that contributes to smooth application and mild skin conditioning.
  • Pentylene Glycol: Humectant with mild antimicrobial properties. Conditions the skin, improves how the formula feels, and gives the preservative system a bit of a boost.
  • Polyquaternium-51: A polymer that forms a moisture-holding film on the skin. It helps protect and hydrate even after rinsing.
  • Trehalose: A sugar with impressive ability to protect skin cells from dehydration stress.
  • Caprylyl Glycol: Conditioning agent and mild preservative booster. Keeps the formula stable and helps it stay on skin comfortably.
  • Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer: A thickener that gives the formula its consistent gel-like texture and stops it from going watery over time.
  • Phenoxyethanol: The preservative. Stops bacteria and mould growing in the formula.

Texture

It’s thinner than you’d expect, especially compared to other face washes. More of a watery gel than a proper gel, it produces a light, soft lather rather than a big foamy cloud. The first time you use it you might genuinely wonder if it’s doing anything. But I like it because it spreads easily without dragging the skin around, rinses off completely without any residue, and leaves absolutely nothing behind that feels heavy or greasy.

Fragrance

There is none. Zero. No synthetic fragrance, no essential oils, no masking fragrance. This is a sign of a good product for sensitives skin that gets easily irritated. It’s part of the reason why this is the extra mild version, know what I’m saying?

How To Use It

Like all cleansers, it’s the first step of your skincare routine.Wet your face with lukewarm water, work a small amount between your palms until it starts to lather, massage it over your entire face. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. You can use it twice a day, morning and night. If you wear significant makeup, you may want to use a separate makeup remover first (if you want to stay with Clinique products, I recommend Take The Day Off). It’s not going to cut through foundation on its own.

Packaging

A clinical greenish bottle as you’d expect from Clinique. The opening doesn’t drip, doesn’t clog, and dispenses a consistent amount every time. There’s nothing much to say about it. It’s functional, not pretty.

Performance & Personal Opinion

This cleanser does exactly what it says on the tin and nothing more, which sounds like faint praise but actually isn’t. It lathers up softly, rinses off completely clean, and your skin feels comfortable afterwards.  Use it consistently and your skin just stays calm. No flare-ups, no irritation, no that-cleanser-is-making-things-worse situation that anyone with sensitive or dry skin knows all too well. It’s gentle enough to use twice a day without your face turning on you.

What I Like About Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild

  • Fragrance-free
  • Rinses completely clean with zero residue
  • No tight, stripped feeling after washing
  • One pump goes a long way – the bottle lasts ages

What I DON’T Like About Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild

  • Doesn’t remove heavy makeup – you need a separate first cleanse if you wear foundation
  • The lather is minimal and the texture is underwhelming, especially at this price

Who Should Use This?

  • People with dry, very dry, sensitive, or reactive skin.
  • People with rosacea.
  • People on active treatments like retinoids or acids who need a cleanser that won’t pile on more irritation.
  • Not for oily skin. Not for acne-prone skin that needs something with more cleansing power.

Does Clinique Liquid Facial Soap Extra Mild Live Up To Its Claims?

CLAIM TRUE?
Leaves skin clean, comfortable, refreshed. True.
Quick-rinsing, non-drying. True.
All skin types. Technically, true. But it’s designed specifically for sensitive skin.

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

If you have dry or sensitive skin and you’ve been struggling to find a cleanser that actually respects your face – yes, buy it. It’s not going to dazzle you. The texture is understated, the lather is modest, and it will not change your life. But it has a genuinely well-considered formula, it’s completely fragrance-free, it uses a gentle surfactant system, and it contains a serious amount of barrier-supporting and moisturising ingredients for something you rinse off after a minute. For oily skin, for makeup removal, for anyone who wants an active treatment cleanser – look elsewhere. But for dry, sensitive, or reactive skin that just needs to be cleaned without being made worse, this earns every bit of the reputation it’s built over the last few decades.
