Paula's Choice CellularYouth Longevity Serum

Remember the good old days when you could pick any Paula’s Choice product off the shelf and KNOW it was gonna do what it said on the tin? Since Paula left the building (literally!), the new owners have done a complete turnaround and released products after products that promise your skin the world without much to back it up. Paula’s Choice CellularYouth Longevity Serum is the last in a long string of releases Paula would NOT approve of. Is it really the miracle worker it promises to be? Not really. Here’s why…

Key Ingredients in Paula’s Choice CellularYouth Longevity Serum: What Makes It Work?

SUNFLOWER SPROUT EXTRACT

Sunflower sprout extract is said to help tired skin cells produce more energy, so they can function better. In one study, sunflower sprout extract did increase ATP (the energy your cells use to do pretty much everything) in tired skin cells in the lab, and reduced AGEs, which damage collagen and speed up aging. A serum with the extract also significantly improved signs of tired, photodamaged skin after seven days.

Promising? Yep. Proof that sunflower sprouts increase NAD+, slow down skin aging or make your skin biologically younger? Nope. Here’s the catch: the researchers defined fatigued skin “as dehydration, dullness and lack of visible firmness.” So basically any moisturiser can fix this. It does NOT prove this extract will magically make your skin younger.

GOJI PHYTO-EXOSOMES

This is Lycium Barbarum Fruit Extract on the ingredient list, although “goji phyto-exosomes” sounds considerably sexier. Exosomes are tiny packages cells use to send stuff to each other. Beauty brands are trying to use them to send active ingredients where they need to go to work best.

A 2025 study found that goji phyto-exosomes increased proteins involved in keeping the skin barrier strong. In a small human trial, a serum containing them also reduced redness and transepidermal water loss after two weeks. That’s cool, but again that’s nothing any good moisturiser wouldn’t do. You don’t need to pay $72 for this.

ACETYL TETRAPEPTIDE-2

Acetyl Tetrapeptide-2 is a peptide, a tiny chain of amino acids that’s supposed to help skin stay firmer. One lab study found that Acetyl Tetrapeptide-2 changed the way skin cells behaved, including how stiff they were and how they held themselves together. So, does this prove Acetyl Tetrapeptide-2 firms skin? Not really. The study was done on skin cells in a lab, not on actual faces. For now, I’d treat it as a nice extra, not a reason to buy the serum.

GLYCERIN

Glycerin isn’t new, trendy or remotely exciting. It’s also one of the most proven ingredients in this entire formula. It’s a humectant, which means it attracts and holds onto water. More water in your skin = softer, smoother, plumper-looking skin. No, it doesn’t reverse aging. But dehydrated skin makes fine lines look worse, so a good dose of glycerin can make your skin look better pretty quickly.

Performance & Personal Opinion

Paula’s Choice CellularYouth Longevity Serum has a lightweight, silky texture that spreads easily, sinks in quickly and doesn’t feel greasy or sticky. It layers well with other skincare without pilling, too. It’s fragrance-free, so there’s no added perfume to irritate sensitive skin (at least, they’re sticking to Paula’s philosophy in one thing).

As for results, this is where I’m a little torn. It makes skin feel smoother, softer and more hydrated, with that plumper, fresher look you get from a good hydrating serum. But wrinkles and firmness? I’m not convinced. When you look at the science, the ingredients that are supposed to do that are more moisturising than anything else, so….

Who Should Use It?

I’d recommend Paula’s Choice CellularYouth Longevity Serum if you want something hydrating and gentle that gives your anti-aging routine a little extra boost. It’s especially good if you’re already using retinoids or other strong actives and don’t want to irritate your skin even more.

If wrinkles and sagging are your main concerns, though, this wouldn’t be my first choice. The science behind the fancy longevity ingredients just isn’t strong enough yet.

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

I’d skip it. Paula’s Choice CellularYouth Longevity Serum is a good hydrating serum dressed up as a groundbreaking anti-aging treatment. The fancy longevity ingredients are interesting, but there’s just not enough proof they do much for wrinkles and sagging yet. For £65, I want more than promises and plumper skin. My money’s going on retinoids and sunscreen instead.
