neutrogena stubborn acne am pm reviews

Neutrogena’s “Stubborn” acne line makes a bold promise: fade what won’t budge. The morning treatment is designed to clear breakouts while the evening treatment to fade away the dark spots pimples sometimes leave behind. Together, they should be the perfect solution for clearer skin, no? No? Well, only one product impressed me. In this review, I’ll tell you which one is worth  making part of your skincare routine and which one is best left on the shelf:

Neutrogena Stubborn Acne AM Treatment ($12.97)

The daytime acne treatment contains 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide, an acne-fighter you don’t see in many leave-on products together. It’s a shame because it works. Here’s how: acne bacteria hate oxygen. Benzoyl peroxide releases oxygen into your pores and kills them off. It also helps unclog dead skin cells sitting in the pore. The catch? It can be irritating, hence why I suggest you use  it as a spot treatment only. There’s no point slapping even a thin layer on acne-free areas.

The good news? Lower concentrations work as well as a higher strength benzoyl peroxide productt. Research consistently shows 2.5% is as good at killing acne-causing bacteria as the 5% or 10% versions, but minus the flaking, redness, and “why does my face look like a lizard” situation.  That’s because, once it’s killed the bacteria it can reach, extra product doesn’t kill more. It just keeps reacting with your skin, which you don’t want.

Texture-wise, it’s a lightweight gel formula that sinks in fast and leaves zero residue. No fragrance, no greasy film, nothing sitting on top of your skin waiting to clog a pore. That’s exactly what you want in something you’re layering under sunscreen and makeup every morning. Dab it directly onto active breakouts and you’ll typically see the redness and size start calming down within hours, with fuller results building over a few days of consistent use.

Just don’t go overboard applying it multiple times a day right out the gate: benzoyl peroxide can still dry you out if you rush it, so ease in and build tolerance. Oh, and once that acne has a clear, you can spot using it in your morning routine (or in your routine at all). Keep the bottle handy in case you need it, by all means. This is a daily treatment only as long as you have active pimples on.

Neutrogena Stubborn Marks PM Treatment ($39.31)

This is the nighttime product meant to fade acne marks and even out skin tone. The star ingredient is retinol, a form of vitamin A. It speeds up how fast your skin sheds old, dull cells and replaces them with new ones, which is why it can fade dark marks over time and smooth out skin texture. The catch? When you first start using it, it can cause dryness, irritation, and redness.

Now, retinol works well even at low percentages, often as low as 0.1%. So don’t assume “low amount” means “won’t work.” That’s not how retinol behaves. It still works, just more slowly. The tricky part is that this brand doesn’t publish the exact percentage they use and when you look at the label, it’s at the very, very end of the ingredient list. So my guess is, they’ve just included the absolute minimum dose. That doesn’t make it useless, but it does mean patience is non-negotiable here. Expect gradual, not dramatic.

Texture is a lightweight cream-serum, spreads easily, sinks in without leaving anything behind, and has basically no scent. In terms of what actually happens on your skin: the first week or two, you might notice some dryness, tingling, or light flaking. That’s not your skin rejecting the product, it’s just adjusting to faster cell turnover. It usually calms down. Keep going and, over several months, marks and dark spots start to look lighter and skin tone gets more even. Don’t expect it to touch fine lines or wrinkles, though. At this dose, that’s not what it’s built for.

Even if it’s not the harshest, don’t apply it every single night from day one, even though that’s what the instructions say. Start with once or twice a week and build up to every other night as your skin gets used to it. Going nightly too soon is the fastest way to end up irritated and blaming the product when really it’s just the pace that was wrong. Still, if you want to fade dark spots faster, I recommend you use a serum with a higher concentration of retinol (you can find my fave picks here) or skin-lightening ingredients (best picks here). If you only use this alone, it’ll take too long to see results.

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

Buy the morning acne treatment without hesitation if you have active pimples or active hormonal acne. It helps get rid of them faster.  The PM Treatment is a tougher call. If it’s your first time using retinol, it’s a good introduction to get your skin used to it. But for best results, I’d use something stronger.
