Hello Bello Sunscreen Reviews: Which Formula Is Best?

I’ve been looking at the Hello Bello baby sunscreens and kids sunscreens because, honestly, mineral sunscreen can be a bit of a nightmare. You’ve got the white cast, the thick texture, the rubbing, the weird smells… and when you’re putting it on a child, you really don’t want to be fighting with your sunscreen every time you leave the house. Hello Bello has a few different mineral sunscreens, and they’re not all the same. Some are richer, some are easier to use, and some make more sense for quick touch-ups than covering an entire body. So I wanted to look past the cute packaging and the ingredient claims and actually get into what these sunscreens are like to use, how they feel on the skin, what you can realistically expect from them, and whether I’d actually bother buying them. Which is the best choice for your baby and children? Let’s find out – and let the best sunscreen win: 

Hello Bello Baby Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 / Kids Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 ($17.99)

If you want a mineral sunscreen that’s actually practical for covering a child from head to toe, these a pretty good option – provided you can live with the fact that it’s still very obviously a mineral sunscreen. FYI, they’re the exact same formula in different packaging. Not sure why… Marketing perhaps?The formula uses 23% zinc oxide to protect skin from both UVA rays and UVB rays, with glycerin and a mixture of oils and emollients to stop all that zinc from feeling completely dry and chalky. And that comes through in the texture. It’s a creamy lotion that spreads more easily than you’d expect from a high-zinc formula, although it can feel a little clumpy to blend it. Just be warned: you’re not getting an invisible finish here. The white cast is visible. 

Once it’s on, though, it doesn’t seem to have that horrible combination of chalkiness and tightness that makes some mineral sunscreens unbearable. The fragrance is the bigger issue for me. There’s no parfum on the label, but there is orange peel oil, so this isn’t genuinely fragrance-free.  And citrusy oils can irritate sensitive skin. For me, the biggest question is whether you care more about performance or cosmetic elegance. If your priority is getting a good mineral sunscreen onto a child and you’re not bothered by some white residue, it makes sense. If you’re going to spend the entire time trying to make it disappear, you’ll probably end up hating it.

Hello Bello SPF 55+ Baby Mineral Sunscreen + Prebiotics ($14.99)

This is the best mineral formula of the three if you have dry skin – but the “prebiotic” part is more marketing than anything else. The texture is rich, creamy and moisturising, and that’s where this formula really earns its place. The combination of shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil and humectants gives it a much more moisturising feel than a basic non-nano zinc oxide sunscreen. It isn’t lightweight, though. You know you’ve put it on. For dry skin, I think that’s a positive; for oily skin, it could become greasy or comedogenic pretty quickly.

There’s also a white cast, although the creamy texture makes it easier to work into the skin than you might expect. It doesn’t magically disappear, so if you’re looking for an invisible mineral sunscreen, this isn’t it. The scent is quite noticeable too. Orange peel oil gives it a citrusy fragrance, which I personally wouldn’t count as fragrance-free just because there’s no parfum on the label. And it can still be irritating. As for the prebiotic claim, I wouldn’t make that the reason to buy it. The formula does contain Bacillus ferment, it’s just a sprinkle  at the end of the ingredient list, so it won’t do much anyway.

Hello Bello Baby Mineral Face + Body Sunscreen Stick SPF 50 / Kids Mineral Face + Body Sunscreen Stick SPF 50 ($14.99)

Again, same formula, different packaging and different marketing. This is the one I’d keep in my bag for quick reapplication, because the format is handy, but I wouldn’t make it my main sunscreen. The formula’s soft, creamy and slightly waxy, and it glides over the skin without the kind of dragging you can get from harder mineral sticks. The big win is convenience: swipe it over a nose, cheeks, ears or hands and you don’t have to get sunscreen all over your fingers. That makes it particularly good for children. You can actually reapply it without turning the whole process into an event.

The downside is the finish. There’s a white cast, and because you’re applying a concentrated mineral sunscreen directly from a stick, you can end up with quite a visible layer if you’re generous. Personally, I’d rather have that than under-apply it, but it’s worth knowing if you’re after something invisible. Especially because if you apply less than the recommended amount, you’re getting way less than SPF 50, so you may as well as not bothered with it.

The formula is also more moisturising than you’d expect from a stick, thanks to shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut oil. It feels comfortable rather than dry, although the finish is definitely richer and waxier than a lotion. The other big advantage is that this is genuinely fragrance-free. There’s no parfum and no essential oil in the formula, which makes it the clear winner of the three if you want to avoid fragrance. My main criticism isn’t actually the formula, it’s the temptation to under-apply. A few quick swipes doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve used enough sunscreen. The stick is convenient, but you still need to be generous. I’d use it for the face and small exposed areas and for reapplication when I’m out. For covering a whole body, I’d reach for the lotion.

The Bottom Line

Overall, I think Hello Bello makes good, practical mineral sunscreens, but they’re not the most elegant formulas around. The biggest trade-offs are the usual ones with zinc: white cast, richer textures and, with some formulas, fragrance. The SPF 50 lotion is my pick for everyday body use, the SPF 55+ Prebiotics is better suited to dry skin, and the stick wins for quick, mess-free reapplication. So yes, I’d use them. Just don’t buy them expecting invisible, weightless sunscreen.
