If you love a foaming cleanser but hate that “why does my face suddenly feel one size too small?” feeling afterwards, Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel sounds pretty much perfect. This soap-free gel cleanser promises to wash away excess oil, sunscreen and daily grime without stripping your skin. And on my combination skin? That’s pretty much what it does. It foams beautifully, rinses clean and leaves my face feeling fresh without that horrible squeaky-clean finish. The catch? Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel isn’t cheap, and the formula contains several fragrant essential oils that won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. So, is this foaming face wash actually worth the money? Here’s my Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel review: what’s in it, how it performs and whether I’d buy it again.
The Verdict

Best for: Combination and oily skin that wants a foaming facial cleanser without the usual stripped-to-hell aftermath.
Skip it if: Your skin is very dry, easily irritated or doesn’t get along with fragrance and essential oils.
What I like: It cleans really well, foams beautifully, rinses off without residue and leaves my skin fresh without feeling tight. Plus, you need so little that one bottle lasts forever.
What I don’t: The price. It’s still a lot of money for something you wash down the sink. I could also happily live without all the fragrant essential oils.
Bottom line: Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is a great cleanser, not a skincare miracle. It gets my combination skin properly clean without making it feel like I’ve attacked it with washing-up liquid, and the bottle lasts long enough to take some of the sting out of the price. If you love foam and your skin tolerates fragrance, I get the hype.
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel Ingredients: What Does The Science Say?
SURFACTANTS TO CLEANSE SKIN
Surfactants are the bouncers of your skincare routine: they grab onto excess oils, sunscreen and grime and escort them off your face. The main surfactants here are Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate and Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate. They’re effective foaming cleansers, but Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate in particular can be a little too good at its job. Surfactants can mess with the fats and proteins that keep your skin barrier happy, which is how you end up with skin that feels squeaky clean… and then tight as hell.
But Dermalogica hasn’t let the strong stuff loose unsupervised. It mixes in gentler surfactants like Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate and Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine. In a human study on mixed surfactant systems, combining surfactants actually caused less irritation than using the individual surfactants alone. Moral of the story? Don’t judge a gel cleanser by one scary-looking ingredient. Judge it by the whole formula.

QUILLAJA SAPONARIA BARK EXTRACT TO BOOST FOAM
Quillaja Saponaria is also called soapbark. Well, that saved us some detective work. Its bark contains saponins, natural compounds that behave like surfactants. They reduce the tension between oil and water, helping cleansers lift away grease and create all those lovely bubbles. A study on Quillaja bark saponins found they’re good at mixing oil with water and creating foam – basically exactly what you want in a cleanser. Quillaja gets credited with sexier things like antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory powers too, but there’s no good evidence that a little soapbark in something you’re rinsing off your face is doing any of that. Sometimes soapbark is just soap.
My Experience With Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is a clear, lightweight gel that turns into a surprisingly generous foam with water. You only need a tiny amount, so the bottle lasts forever. Which is handy, because at this price, I’d expect it to. The scent is light, herbal and a little lavender-y. It’s not punching me in the face with fragrance, but it’s definitely there. I don’t mind it, but I wish it weren’t there. What makes it smell so good are lavender extracts and citrus essential oils that could irritate sensitive skin. In that respect, natural fragrances are just as bad as artificial fragrances.
The packaging is simple and practical. No bells, no whistles, no skincare theatre. It also makes it easy to dispense a small amount of gel cos honestly, you don’t need more. On my combination skin, it does exactly what I want a cleanser to do: gets rid of excess oil, sunscreen and daily grime without leaving my face feeling like it’s been power-washed. It rinses off cleanly, leaves no annoying residue behind, and my skin feels fresh afterwards without that horrible tight, squeaky-clean feeling.
Results-wise, I’m not going to pretend a cleanser changed my life. It didn’t. But it cleans well, feels nice to use and doesn’t strip my skin. That’s already more than I can say for plenty of foaming cleansers.
Who Should Use Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel?
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel is best for combination and oily skin that wants a proper foaming cleanse without the dryness. If your skin gets shiny, grimy or just feels disgusting by the end of the day, this is very good at getting everything off and leaving skin feeling fresh, not flayed.
I’d avoid it if you have very dry skin, sensitive skin or fragrance-reactive skin. The surfactant system has some muscle, and the essential oils are frankly unnecessary baggage if your skin already has a flair for drama. If that’s you, you may want to check out Dermalogica Ultracalming Cleanser.
