1. Best Multi-Tasking Eye Makeup Remover: Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes, & Lips ($28.00)
Can’t be bothered to use a makeup remover for your eyes and another for your lips? Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes & Lips got you covered. This dual-phase remover takes off both longwearing lipsticks and waterproof mascaras in just a couple of swipes. Yet, it’s very gentle on the skin and does’t irritate your eyes. It’s a staple in my stash.

2. Best Eye Makeup Remover For Sensitive Skin: Paula’s Choice Gentle Touch Makeup Remover ($24.00)
Paula’s Choice Gentle Touch Makeup Remover can be used all over the face, eyes included. I don’t know about you, but I love to use just one product and be done with it. What makes this one special is the inclusion of soothing ingredients, like Aloe vera and allantoin. They soothe your skin as the makeup remover takes every last trace of long wearing foundation, and waterproof makeup off your skin.

3. Best Eye Makeup Remover For Dry Skin: Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover ($7.99)
If you prefer an eye makeup remover in lotion form that hydrates skin while it removes makeup, get your hands on Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. True to its name, it removes even stubborn waterproof makeup while leaving your skin softer and hydrated. Shake its gently to activate the formula and then use a cotton pad to gently swipe everything off your lid. There’s not much else to say. It works.
Available at: Target
4. Best Eye Makeup Remover On A Buget: L’Oreal Clean Artiste Waterproof & Long Wearing Eye Makeup Remover ($7.99)
One of the cheapest eye makeup removers at the drugstore, L’Oreal Clean Artiste Waterproof & Long Wearing Eye Makeup Remover is as effective as it’s gentle. Free of fragrance and other irritants, it removes all traces of makeup (including waterproof mascaras) without irritating the delicate eye area. If you’re on a budget, this is the one to get.
5. Best Natural Makeup Remover: Jojoba Oil
Want to keep your skincare routine as natural as possible? Cleanse with oils. Oils work because like attracts like. Natural oils attach to the oils in your makeup, melting them away. You can use almost any oils for this, but Jojoba is my fave. Why? For starters, it has a lightweight texture that doesn’t leave a greasy mess everywhere. It doesn’t have a strong scent that may irritate the eye area. And it takes everything off.
Available at: Your local health food shops.

FAQs
How do I use an oil like jojoba to remove eye makeup?
Massage a few drops onto dry lids with dry fingertips – water deactivates the oil’s ability to grab onto makeup. Give it 20-30 seconds to dissolve everything, then wipe away with a damp cotton pad. Follow with your regular cleanser. That second cleanse isn’t optional: skip it and you’re going to bed with a film of dissolved mascara and oil on your skin, which is a fast track to milia and congested pores. Dual-phase removers like the Clinique don’t need a follow-up cleanse, which is part of why they’re so convenient.
Does it matter how long you leave the remover on before wiping?
Yes, and most people skip this step entirely. Press a soaked pad onto your closed lid for 20-30 seconds before moving it. This lets the formula dissolve the makeup so you do less physical work. It matters most with waterproof mascara – the less you scrub, the fewer lashes end up on the cotton pad.
Does it matter what I use to wipe – cotton pad, reusable pad, or cotton swab?
A regular cotton pad works fine for the lid and lash line. For the corners and lower lash line, a cotton swab is more precise and less likely to drag product across your undereye. Reusable pads are a perfectly good alternative, as long as they’re soft – anything with texture is too rough for the eye area. Whatever you use, press first, then slide once in one direction outward, away from the inner corner. No back-and-forth.
Should I press and hold or swipe – and does direction matter?
Press and hold first, always, then one slow outward swipe. The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your face and has almost no underlying fat or collagen support. Repeated dragging in multiple directions just leads to wrinkles overtime. Be kind!
Do I need to remove my contact lenses before using eye makeup remover?
Yes, always remove your lenses first. Most eye makeup removers contain emulsifiers, silicones, or oils that can absorb into soft contact lenses and cause irritation, blurred vision, or damage to the lens itself. Even gentle formulas aren’t designed to interact with contacts. Lenses out first, then remove your makeup.
Can I use these removers if I have eyelash extensions?
Oil is the enemy of lash extension adhesive. Straight oils like jojoba are out entirely, and so is the Clinique Take The Day Off, which contains ingredients that can weaken the bond over time. Your safest bet is a water-based or gel formula specifically labelled as extension-safe. Of the products listed here, the Paula’s Choice Gentle Touch is the closest to appropriate, but formulas and adhesives vary – check with your lash tech before using anything new.
The Bottom Line
Finding the right eye makeup remover is genuinely trial and error. What works brilliantly for your friend with dry skin and zero eye sensitivity might leave you red-eyed and irritated by morning. But once you find your formula, technique matters just as much as the product itself. Be patient with it, press before you swipe, and resist the urge to scrub. Your future lids will thank you.
And if you’re not ready to give up waterproof mascara, same. Just know that removing it properly doesn’t have to be a 10-minute ordeal. With the right approach, it takes less than a minute and your skin stays intact. That’s a trade worth making.
I use the Clinique Rinse-Off Eye Makeup Solvent (blue liquid) and I love it. The worst is Almay eye makeup remover pads – yeee owww .. those sting and burn like crazy.

Monica, ouch! That sounds painful! I’ll stay away from those, thanks!
i use baby shampoo!
T gros, I had never thought of using that. I’m glad it’s working well for you.
Olive oil blurs my vision :[ .
Ana, oh no! That sucks! 🙁
I love Bi-Facil by Lancome and Garnier’s Simply Essentails 2 In 1 Make Up Remover, on my fifth bottle now.
Marina, I haven’t tried that particular one, but I like Garnier makeup removers. They work well and are cheap. However, most of them tend to have a big opening that dispenses too much product, which is very annoying.
Mary Kay oil free makeup remover is the best I’ve ever tried. It’s also the gentlest.
