medik8 advanced night restore review

Medik8 Advanced Night Restore promises to repair free radical damage, make your skin look younger overnight, and even boost the effects of retinol. All while you sleep. Sounds like the perfect excuse to hit the snooze button, doesn’t it?

I wish it were that easy. The cream has a fantastic mix of ceramides, squalane, and other moisturising ingredients that leave my skin soft and smooth for hours. And, despite its rich texture, it didn’t make me break out. But can it really turn back the clock overnight? And why on earth does a cream designed to help irritated skin contain so many essential oils? Here’s what happened when I put Medik8 Advanced Night Restore to the test.

The Verdict

My rating: 4/5

Best for: Dry and combination skin, especially if you’re using retinol and need extra moisture.

Skip it if: You have sensitive skin. The essential oils may cause irritation.

What I like: The ceramide complex and squalane help strengthen your skin barrier. The cream absorbs quickly, leaves skin soft and smooth for hours, and didn’t make me break out.

What I don’t: The unnecessary essential oils and overhyped claims about repairing free radical damage overnight.

Bottom line: A great moisturiser that does a good job of keeping skin soft, smooth, and hydrated. Just don’t expect it to erase wrinkles overnight. I’d recommend it if your skin isn’t sensitive, but you’re paying for a good moisturiser, not an anti-aging miracle.

Key Ingredients In Medik8 Advanced Night Restore Cream: What Does The Science Say?

Multi-Ceramide Complex: Does It Really Restore Your Skin Barrier?

Can a moisturiser make you look younger overnight? Actually, yes. Just not in the way you think. When your skin is dry, fine lines look more noticeable and your complexion looks dull. Add moisture back, and your skin looks plumper, smoother, and healthier. The wrinkles haven’t disappeared. You’ve just made them less obvious.

Research shows that ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids work together to repair the skin barrier. Medik8 uses all of them (including 5 different types of ceramides!), so you can count on it to do the job. Just don’t confuse plumper skin with younger skin. Moisturising makes wrinkles less noticeable. It doesn’t get rid of them.

N-Acetyl Glucosamine: Does It Really Boost The Effects Of Vitamin A?

Retinol & all other forms of Vitamin A are the gold standard for fighting wrinkles. None of them is here. Huh? What’s here is N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG), a sugar molecule your skin uses to produce hyaluronic acid. Medik8 recommends you use it (and this cream) after Vitamin A. Why?

Research shows that NAG and retinol work together to boost hyaluronic acid production. And since hyaluronic acid helps your skin hold onto moisture, that means plumper, smoother-looking skin. Clever, huh?

The catch? The study was done on skin cells in a lab, not on people using these ingredients together. This little sugar can help you hydrate your skin, but there’s not enough convincing evidence it can do much for wrinkles yet.

Midnight Antioxidant Complex: Can It Really Repair Free Radical Damage Overnight?

If a few berries and a peptide (the Midnight Antioxidant Complex Medik8 raves about) could repair years of free radical damage while you sleep, we’d all wake up looking 25. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Saskatoon berries are rich in anthocyanins, antioxidants that give them their purple colour. Research shows they protect cell membranes from free radical damage. Dragon fruit contains polyphenols, too, so they fight free radicals too. At least they do in a petri dish. And even if they work on real skin, they can only prevent wrinkles, not reduce those you already have.

That’s supposedly the job of Ferric Hexapeptide-35, the complex’s cell-repairing peptide. Sounds impressive, but I couldn’t find independent clinical studies proving it actually repairs skin damage, so we’ll leave it at that.

My Experience With Medik8 Advaced Night Restore Cream

Medik8 Advanced Night Restore Cream is a great complement to retinol (if your skin isn’t sensitive). Remember can be irritating, especially if you’ve never used it before. A good moisturizer can soothe the dryness and irritation away… if it has the right actives. The ceramide complex plus squalane does the job.

Now, when I hear night cream, I immediately think of those thick, greasy moisturisers that sit on your face like a mask. No, thank you. Thankfully, Advanced Night Restore is nothing like that. It’s not exactly lightweight, but it’s not thick either. It has a creamy texture that spreads easily, so you don’t need to use a ton of product to cover your whole face.

It absorbs quickly, too. No greasy film sitting on top of my skin, no sticky feeling that makes me want to wash my face again. My skin feels softer and smoother after applying it, and that feeling lasts for hours. It didn’t make me break out, either. With my combination skin, I’m always suspicious of rich night creams, especially when they contain lots of moisturising lipids. This one gave me the moisture without the pimples. Exactly what I want.

What I don’t understand is the essential oils. Lavender, rosemary, orange, and a bunch of others give the cream its fragrance, but they can also irritate sensitive skin. The scent’s quite strong, too. *sighs*

Does Medik8 Advaced Night Restore Cream Live Up To Its Claims?

BRAND CLAIM TRUE?
Intense Moisturisation. The formula works overnight to restore your skin’s natural barrier & deeply nourish all complexions. True.
Overnight Youth Boost. Thanks to skin-replenishing lipids, your complexion appears well-rested with a healthy-looking glow. True.
Free Radical Repair. Our Midnight Antioxidant Complex works overnight to tackle free radical damage & reveal smoother, firmer-looking skin by morning. Sort of true. It’s true that antioxidants fight free radicals, but don’t smooth out skin or make it firmer. Hence why the brand uses “looking.” As long as you think your skin looks better in the morning, the claim is proved true even though antioxidants themselves don’t do that.
Boosts The Effects of Vitamin A
Designed to be used after vitamin A, for enhanced skin-smoothing & firming benefits.
True… because that’s what it was designed to do. Whether it does it on real skin isn’t what this claim says.

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

Is Medik8 Advanced Night Restore the best moisturiser to use with retinol? It’s certainly a good contender. It has the right ingredients to help your skin deal with retinol’s drying side effects, and I love how it feels on my skin. But the essential oils spoil an otherwise excellent formula. If your skin tolerates them, go for it. If retinol already makes your skin sensitive and irritated, I’d choose a fragrance-free moisturiser instead. Why risk making things worse?
