Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.90

Welcome to another week of random ramblings everyone! Here we go:

Sunset Boulevard

Sunset_Boulevard
I’ve already mentioned that Sunset Boulevard is one of my favourite musicals. Last month, I finally got round to see the 1950s movie that inspired it. Joe Gills, a young and poor playwright, meets Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, who believes that, with his help, she’ll be able to return to her former glory. What follows is a story of betrayal, disappointed hopes and murder. It is a scathing critique of Hollywood and shows how fickle and cruel an industry it is. The female lead, Norma, is played by Gloria Swanson, while Joe by William Holden, both of whom really do a marvellous job. There is also a cameo by director Cecil B. DeMille, who plays himself. It is really is a wonderful movie with a great cast and interest plot, so it’s no wonder that has become a classic.

Do you like watching old movies? And do you have a favourite one?

What I’m Reading Now

the rivals richard brinsley sheridan
The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Written by 18th-century playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, this is a comedy set in Bath. Lydia Languish is a rich and hopeless romantic who prefer to elope with a poor man she loves than enjoying a wealthy lifestyle with a man she doesn’t care about. And there are a couple that her family is trying to impose upon her. But will she give in to pressure or will love conquer all? Her cousin, on the other hand, is already engaged to the man she loves, Faulkland, but their relationship is under strain because of his exaggerated jealousy. This is a very witty, and simple work that deals with an issue that was very important at the time in a way that entertains without moralizing. I also developed an affection for Mrs Malaprop (malapropism is derived from her). She’s Lydia’s guardian and she’s always trying to impress people by using long and complicated words she doesn’t really know the meaning of. Because of that, she always ends up using the wrong ones! If you’re interested in reading it, The Rivals is available for free at Project Gutenberg.

I watched Sunset Blvd. recently and yes, it deserves it’s classic status (Gloria Swanson!).

I love the oldies!
I’ve decided that I’ll go through the classics bit by bit when I get the time and it that decision has already yielded some of my favourite movies: Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (Bette Davis is magnificent!) and 12 Angry Men. And I have loved Arsenic and Old Lace ever since I first saw it as a child.
Have you seen those?

1. Favourite type of chocolate?
Mint chocolate, milk chocolate, milk chocolate with milk filling, milk chocolate with whole nuts, chilli chocolate… It depends on the mood, really.
One of the best chocolates I’ve ever eaten was an orange-infused chocolate, since discontinued. Never found a fitting substitute – the orange peel ones simply aren’t that.

2. First type of makeup product you ever used?
Probably my mother’s eyeshadow palette, very late ’80s.

3. Do you have any other window/tab opened in your browser now?
Do I ever!
I always have a million tabs open  .
Checking the blogs I follow and going through Two Nerdy History Girls’ Breakfast Links (love them so!).

4. Harry Potter or The Hunger Games?
Read Harry Potter, loved it, haven’t seen the movies, except the first one.
Haven’t read the Hunger Games, seen the movie, loved it.
Harry Potter, it is, then 😀 .

5. Do you like rain?
It’s gloomy, but after the troubles the farmers had with crops after some droughty years… It’s needed, very much.
(In moderation – a flood is not good, either.)

Ana, Gloria Swanson was an amazing actress, wasn’t she? I’ve seen Whatever Happened to Baby Jane when I little, but I don’t remember it too well. I definitely want to see that again. And the other two are on my to-watch list. I’ve turned to old movies too lately as I’ve realised it’s been ages since I last went to the cinema. No new movies have caught my attention in a loooooong time. But the classics, instead… well, there is a reason why they became classics, after all. 🙂

I love Two Nerdy History Girls’ Breakfast Links too. I’ve just finished checking this week’s links. That blog is a treasure trove for history lovers. 🙂

Kiss & Make-up, my mother actually loves rain! I think she’s nuts. I know it’s needed, like Ana pointed out, but I still can’t see how anyone can like it lol.

Oh that movie is gooood! So many classics it’s really hard to choose but the only one that pops into my mind atm is An American In Paris with Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron.

1. Orange and coffee flavored chocolates are at the top for me & if they’re Belgian well it a double whammy!
2. I think it was black crayon.
3. I always have at least 7 tabs open at all times. 🙂
4. Harry Potter but I did like the 1st movie of The Hunger Games.
5. I’m not a fan of the rain but love thunderstorms! I know weird!
