Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.9

by Gio

Hello everyone,

it’s time again for some random ramblings. Let’s get started:

Snow

It’s been snowing quite a lot here lately so I thought I’d post a photo of my town enveloped in a mantle of snow. It looks beautiful, doesn’t it? But I just can’t wait for it all to melt away. I spent more than a week now locked up in the house and going out only when necessary because walking and driving are both unpractical and dangerous at the moment. It was nice at first to curl up under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate in one hand and a book in the other, but after a while that becomes tedious too, you know? I just wanna go out and hang out with my friends and it’s so frustrating that I can’t. What about you? Is it snowing in your neck of the woods? And do you like snow?

What I’m Reading Now

The Thirteen Problems by Agatha Christie. I really like the idea of this book: a group of people, which includes Miss Marple, gathers together for an evening and tries to solve crimes. Each one in turns tells of story of which only they know the solution and the others have to guess who the culprit is. Some of the stories were of easy resolution, but most instead are interesting and well-plotted. This is definitely my favourite collection of short stories from this author. These intellectual puzzles are entertaining to read both alone or out loud to friends and family so they can try and guess the solutions of the crimes too.

1. Do you still write letters?
I used to have lots of pen pals when I was a teenager, but as I got older it became more and more difficult to keep up with them and I stopped. It’s a shame really. These days, I rarely write any letters.

2. Have you purchased or received a fake beauty product?
Nope. I only buy makeup from reputable stores. I buy stuff from ebay too sometimes but only products from brands that I know well and ask the seller for extra photos and info to make absolutely sure that I’m purchasing the real thing.

3. What are you wearing on your nails right now?
Layla Ceramic Effect Nail Polish n.23, a beautiful reddish wine with purple undertones.

4. Chinese or Mexican food?
Chinese.

5. What do you think of Pinterest?
I’m asking cos everyone seems to be on Pinterest at the moment but I’m not sure I get what the hype is all about. So, what have I been missing?

1. Do you still write letters? I never really wrote them in the first place. But I do send Thank You cards whenever appropriate, and still by snail mail.

2. Have you purchased or received a fake beauty product? Not that i know of. I’m pretty sure I haven’t.

3. What are you wearing on your nails right now? I have a sort of French manicure, but the nail color is a light teal from Wet N Wild and the tip is a turquoise by Sinful Colors. With a bit of sparkle added to the tip because I couldn’t resist.

4. Chinese or Mexican food? That’s tough, but I say Mexican. Now, if it was Japanese or Mexican, I would have definitely said Japanese.

5. What do you think of Pinterest? I like it. Basically, I use it to bookmark and categorize cool websites I stumble onto. Like, I find a good recipe for low-calorie lemon bars that I know I want to use again, I pin it. Then I know exactly where to find it later.

Trisha, so Pinterest is just a bookmarking service then? I think the idea is nice but I use firefox plugin for that so I’m not sure I need an account there too..

And your manicure is wonderful!

1. Most of my letters are e-mails now. I did write letters before, and growing up, my mom made my brothers and I write thank you letters immediately after Christmas and birthdays. Good practice.
2. I’m not aware of purchasing or receiving any fake beauty products. But, I purchase most of my makeup from the store because of this potential problem.
3. I really like both. I guess it depends on my mood.
4. I don’t get pinterist either.

Eleanor, writing thank you letters is a great habit indeed. It’s a shame a lot of people don’t do that anymore.

I still write thank you letters, they are just e-mails now. But it would be really wonderful to get back to using pen and paper. I guess I’ll have to put it on my list of the other 30-million things that I want and/or need to do.

It’s still nice that you send, a lot of people don’t even send emails. using pen and paper is nicer and it’s a shame that we are all losing that habit, it seems.

1. Do you still write letters?
Yes, mostly just as an excuse to use sealing wax 🙂
2. Have you purchased or received a fake beauty product?
Luckily, no!
3. What are you wearing on your nails right now?
Nailtiques (Formula 2, I believe)
4. Chinese or Mexican food?
Mexican
5. What do you think of Pinterest?
Absolutely love it. Was reading your reply to Trisha above, and yes, in a way it is a bookmarking service, but I see it as more of an online inspiration board. I’m a very visual person, so I’ll have a style board and a recipe board, an be able to see all my favorite things that way. Also, the main difference between this and bookmarking is that Pinterest is public, so you get to see the things other people love, and share your favorite things with the Pinterest community 🙂

Makeup Morsels, I see. Thanks for explaining that about Pinterest. I can definitely see the appeal now, although I’m not sure it’s for me. Maybe I should just open an account and see..

Well, hey! That sealing wax is a cool idea. Maybe it would get me back to using pen and paper. 🙂

For NY I went to visit my bf’s family and there, in the shade of a monastery, found a patch of snow/ice the size of two bigger books. I stepped on it and thought that was going to be my only encounter with snow for this, at that time unusually warm, winter.

Cue Feb 2nd and snow that just won’t stop.

A collapse of public transportation, endangered birds dying of cold, the Danube froze 60%, not to mention the smaller rivers (they didn’t just freeze, there’s snow on them, too!), and the garbage trucks can’t do the rounds.

We can’t shovel the snow from the pathways fast enough!

As you said, we have all been pretty much locked in since the start of February.
I braved the cold to meet my friends because I couldn’t stand being cooped up anymore.

1. Do you still write letters?
The same as you.

2. Have you purchased or received a fake beauty product?
I think I’ve received one… but it turned out being one of the best mascaras I have ever tried 😀 !

3. What are you wearing on your nails right now?
Nothing, I’m giving them a break so that they don’t break.
… And today one did <_< .

4. Chinese or Mexican food?
Chinese!

5. What do you think of Pinterest?
I think it's a cool idea, but I have problems viewing it as a social thing… But everyone's raving about it!

Ana, I hope it will stop snowing where you live too. It’s just awful when it snows that much. Everything comes to a halt and even doing the simplest of things becomes so difficult.

And how lucky that your fake mascara turned out to be actually good!

Swati, I’m glad someone likes snow. I think it’s pretty to look at, and it’s nice to play with it for a while, but when you can’t leave home because of it it is just very frustrating.

What are your fave AC novels?

We just had snow last weekend(previous) and that’s about it. It snowed on Wednesday or Thursday night but didn’t last to morning.

1. No, rarely write letters nowadays.

2. No, I don’t think so.

3. Letting my nails rest currently.

4. Both!

5. What’s that?

Vonvon, I’m glad snow didn’t last long in your neck of the woods. I hate how everything comes to a halt and it’s dangerous to leave home when it snows a lot.

And Pinterest is a new bookmarking service everyone is obsessing about at the moment. Here’s the link: http://www.pinterest.com

First of all – I do NOT like snow – we live on a very quiet road, on The South Downs – OK, not exactly the Alps, but hilly for south-east UK. Consequently we get more snow than other people round here, and our roads never get treated, so we get totally stranded. OK, the kids love the ‘snow days’, but I can’t get to work, or indeed anywhere else, and end up going crazy!! This year the children built an igloo, so at least they had some fun :/

1. Do you still write letters? Only thank you letters really.
2. Have you purchased or received a fake beauty product? Yes – I got some things from ebay that purported to be MAC, but were obviously not. To get any cash back I had to go and get two letters from official stores to say they were fake – hello? I only buy from ebay as we don’t have stores close by, and it wasn’t worth the trip into London to get to a ‘proper’ MAC dealer 🙁 At least I learnt from the experience, and now only buy direct, or from on-line department stores.
3. What are you wearing on your nails right now? Nothing, lol – it’s the school ‘half-term’, and not got time for nails 🙂 They’re also looking chipped and cracked – oh dear, too much igloo building and snow clearing!
4. Chinese or Mexican food? Mexican
5. What do you think of Pinterest? Um, what….

Viv, I feel your pain. From your description, it seems like the places we live in are similar and I experience the same problems. You just can’t do anything but stay at home. It is so frustrating! It was fun when I was a kid, but not anymore.

And I’m sorry you purchased fake MAC items and had to go through all that hassle to get a refund. There are lots of fake MAC products on ebay unfortunately and they should really do something about it.
