Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.74

by Gio

Hello and happy Sunday!

Here are this week’s random ramblings:

Brush Holders

brush holders

I believe that a girl can never have too many brushes. It’s important to have backups so that when your brushes are dirty or drying after washing, you still have some left you can use to apply your makeup with. Doing your makeup with your fingers or those horrible mini brushes that come with eye and face products just doesn’t give you the same flawless results.

I house my brushes in two brush holders. The white one is a container I’ve had since I was a child. I don’t remember what it contained originally, but now it’s perfect to hold all those brushes that I use often (and that I’ve since washed, ahem). The black one, instead, was part of a Mememe gift set and housed a blush, a gloss and a nail polish. It’s made of cardboard, is sturdy and very pretty. I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away so now I use it to hold those brushes that are old or simply little used.

How do you store your makeup brushes?

What I’m Reading Now

brida paulo coelho
Brida by Paulo Coehlo. A friend of mine is a big fan of Paulo Coehlo and, after hearing her rave about his books for years, I finally decided to give one a go. But I think I picked the wrong one cos I hated it. To be honest, I’m not even sure I understood it. Brida is a young girl on his quest to knowledge. She asks for help to a local forest-living Magus who is a Teacher of the Tradition of the Sun, and to a middle-aged woman called Wicca, a Teacher of the Tradition of the Moon. I’m not sure what these traditions are (the book doesn’t explain it) but apparently Magus teaches her to overcome her fears by leaving her lying alone on a rock in the middle of the woods at night, while Wicca teaches her to dance to the music of the world, whatever that means. Brida does all this to embrace her gift and become a witch, but also to find her soulmate. However, there’s not really much of a story here. It’s more of a reflection on spiritual, wicca and new age topics. If that’s your thing, you may enjoy it. I just found it confusing.

Sunday Survey, Vol.153

1. Current obsession?
Musicals. I’ve always liked them, but these days I’m listening to musical soundtracks non-stop. lol

2. What’s your favourite MAC collection of all time?
C-Shock. The colours were so fun and bright. I also loved Barbie Loves MAC. Why can’t MAC do something that fun again instead than boring us with 30 dull and dupable collections a year?!

3. Your favourite skirt?
A knee-length black lace pencil skirt.

4. Tartan or chequered?
Tartan! I adore all things tartan.

5. What do you think of neon heels?
I think they’re fun for summer.

It’s your turn now!

Hooboy, that must be some book. I had to go look up some other reviews because I have no idea what was going on by that description. What I’ve found is disheartening, to say the least.

It seems not even the author himself knows the slightest thing about Wicca. “An ancient Wicca ritual!” No. No. Because Wicca is no older than your grandfather. It was invented in the 20s by a British guy with a thing for naked chicks becoming his ‘priestesses’, and got popular in the 50s. Wow, that’s ancient! The holidays aren’t even based on British-specific hols; they’re pulled from all over Europe, and all gods/goddesses of old Ireland and Britain were reduced to one Goddess and one God. So, no. No ancient practices there. And dancing naked around fires isn’t something that I’ve known any Wiccan to do. It may be called for in certain spells, but it isn’t necessary at all. Not doing so doesn’t make you any less ‘magical’ or whatever. I’ve also never heard of the Tradition of the Sun. Pure fiction, or it’s pulled from a non-Wiccan pantheon and bastardized (as so many are; see “third eye” in common lexicon, stolen from Hinduism).

Other quotes from seem like unsubstantiated fluff and BS that has little or nothing to do with Wicca, or indeed much of the generalized Pagan paths. Some are even from the Bible, which is about as anti-witch as it can be!

I’m sorry you’ve wasted your money on it. My head hurts just reading quotes and summaries. x.x

beautifulwithbrains May 26, 2013 - 5:53 pm

BebeTaian, I’m sorry my description wasn’t clearer, but it’s really hard to say what a book is about when the plot is almost non-existent and the pages are full of nonsense. To be honest, I don’t know much about Wicca, but it seemed to me that the author simply took different concepts from different sources, such as Wicca and the Bible, and put them all together, which is one of the reasons why I found it very confusing.

One minute it tells you to connect with the earth, the next it “explains” passages of the Bible, and next thing you know it turns out that the most powerful force in the universe is sex and there’s a bunch of women dancing naked around a fire. For a huge chunk of the book, the author speaks about soulmates, how they are born, how they find each other, but in the end, it all comes down to sex. Sex and naked women. I can’t even begin to tell you how disheartening that was. Up until that point, I was sure the book had a point, but then I lost all faith in it.

I’m just glad I didn’t buy it. My friend lent it to me. I told her I wanted to read a Coehlo book and she said, have your pick. This one was short, was based in Ireland (a country I love) and I thought it was a good introduction. It wasn’t and I’m not sure I’ll ever read anything from this author again.

BebeTaian May 26, 2013 - 7:26 pm

That’s kind of what I’ve gathered. I’m not sure anyone could adequately describe the plot because it’s a novelized version of the worst neopagan fanfic ever written. x.x Bonus points for pointless sexualization of women, especially under the guise of “spirituality”! bleh. I’m glad you didn’t waste any money on it! Your friend probably doesn’t know the difference, either. Maybe her next gift could be a fun book on actual Irish mythology? I think these guys have some resources… and as always, Ebay and Amazon are wonderful online flea-markets.

beautifulwithbrains May 26, 2013 - 8:37 pm

Bleh indeed. When I came to the part about sex, I thought, “here we go again”. Why can’t we talk about spirituality without reducing everything to sex for once? So disappointing.

My friend is into spirituality, but doesn’t believe in anything in particular. Maybe this is why she didn’t find the book as confusing as I did. That would be a great idea. Thanks for the link!

BebeTaian May 26, 2013 - 8:48 pm

Sex magic is one of the most primordial and basic kinds. Aleister Crowley also became pretty obsessed with it. But there’s more ways to ‘raise energy’ or achieve a certain state of mind than just sex. It just so happens that it becomes a convenient way to… hnn, not sure how to say it. Gain readers, sexualize women even more. I don’t have a problem with sex in itself. It’s just that when society constantly contextualizes sex as an unwanted but necessary rite, or when coercion occurs (like “Want to find your True Soulmate? Then this is what you’ll have to do…”), that’s when it starts getting into murky territory.

beautifulwithbrains May 26, 2013 - 10:11 pm

Exactly. Why does everything always have to be about sex? That’s what bothers me, not sex in itself, with which I don’t have a problem. Sex is presented as the solution to every problem. Want to find a man? Be sexy. Want a job? Be attractive. Want to become a witch? Dance around a fire naked. Even those Tv shows that should teach a woman how to dress always insist that all your outfits should be sexy, even to go to the supermarket! And that sounds out a very dangerous message.

Sex is natural, and an important part of our lives, but it’s not the end all and be all. Why can’t we focus on love, or relationships, or spirituality for once? Now, that would be revolutionary and would probably gain the author more readers than sex does.

And I’m really tired of this sex sells crap. Sex sells sex, but I’m not sure it is as good at selling everything else as people think. You may get people’s attention that way, but I don’t think many buy a car because the ad shows a half naked model, or a record because the singer is naked in the video, or a book because there’s sex in it. Most people still rely on word of mouth imo, and in any case, you can trick them once with sex, but if your product sucks, they won’t buy it again. But I guess it’s the easiest, laziest way to make a quick buck and we’ll have to put up with it for a long time. But I do believe they’d make a lot more if they came up with better products and smarter marketing tactics.

Tavia May 26, 2013 - 2:42 pm

1. Current obsession? Lately I’m obsessed over youtube videos….as I created my own channel for Chicprofile but everytime I want to record a video something comes up. I’m really hopping this week I can finally record and edit my first video.
2. What’s your favourite MAC collection of all time? As much as I would like to answer this, I don’t think I can. I mean there are probably a few but since MAC is launching like 4-5 collections every month who can keep track with those names. Lately I like the Fashion Sets with bright pink shades and I did like the Glamour Daze Holiday 2012 Collection because there were lot of products to choose from, I found quite a few nice blushes and eyeshadows. 🙂
3. Your favourite skirt? I don’t wear skirts anymore 🙁
4. Tartan or chequered? None of them is for me…
5. What do you think of neon heels? :)) I have some new neon fuchsia flip flops that I bought last week and I pair of coraly neon flats I bought two months ago so yeah, I guess I’m all for neon this summer. 🙂

beautifulwithbrains May 26, 2013 - 5:57 pm

Tavia, good luck with your video! I hope everything goes well, cos I would really love to see it. What kind of videos are you planning to do? Reviews, tutorials, etc?

Tavia May 30, 2013 - 6:26 pm

For my first video I want to do A makeup organization video/makeup collection because so many asked me over the years how my makeup corner looks like, how do I store my brushes, eyeshadows etc and I guess this video will be the best idea to start of with. I won’t do makeup tutorials, I’m not that confident and the natural light in my room is very dim but I will try to collections preview, some product reviews. The idea is to take it step by step and I will ask my visitors what they want to see on my Youtube chanel. I’m a little afraid what people will say about my English accent. 😀

beautifulwithbrains May 30, 2013 - 7:37 pm

Doing videos is so nervewracking, isn’t it? But I’m sure there’s nothing wrong with your English accent. People will think it’s cute. 🙂 I like your plan to take it one step at a time and see what your readers would like to watch. And I can’t wait to watch your first video. It’s always interesting to see other people’s stashes and how they organize them.

xin May 26, 2013 - 3:21 pm

hi gio!!! i havent done this sunday thing for a long long time 😀

1. Current obsession?
– movies!!! been watching a lot of movies lately

2. What’s your favourite MAC collection of all time?
– not a MAC fan..

3. Your favourite skirt?
– Umbrella skirt, it makes me feel girly 🙂

4. Tartan or chequered?
– Hmm neither..but if i were to choose, it’s probably tartan

5. What do you think of neon heels?

beautifulwithbrains May 26, 2013 - 6:00 pm

Xin, welcome back! 🙂

Umbrella skirts are really lovely. And what kind of movies do you like best?

xin May 27, 2013 - 7:27 am

i prefer thriller/action/comedy 😀 anything that is fast paced!

beautifulwithbrains May 28, 2013 - 6:50 pm

I like comedies and fast paced movies too. 🙂

Trisha May 26, 2013 - 4:04 pm

Hi, Gio!!

1. Current obsession?

Doctor Who. I’d never seen it before, so I started watching it a few months ago. And now I’m a super fan. It happened so quickly…

2. What’s your favourite MAC collection of all time?

I’m not a big enough fan of MAC to answer that question.

3. Your favourite skirt?

Right now, I only have one skirt that still fits me after all the weight loss, and it’s this awesome purple tartan pleated skirt. It’s lovely.

4. Tartan or chequered?

Well, of the two, I’d say tartan, though checkered is great too. If you’d have put houndstooth in there though, that TOTALLY would have won. 😀

5. What do you think of neon heels?

They’re adorable!

beautifulwithbrains May 26, 2013 - 6:04 pm

Trisha, my boyfriend started watching Dr Who a few months ago and now he’s addicted too. We just caught a couple of episodes on TV and now he’s watching all the series and talks about them a lot. He’s slowly turning me into a fan too. I’m not usually into sci-fi, but this show is really good.

Icaria May 26, 2013 - 4:59 pm

– I keep the few brushes I have atm in a mason jar with dried beans at the bottom to keep them straight & kind of separated. I should make an effort to make the jar look nicer since there’s tons of different ways to decorate them.
– The only Coehlo book I was able to read was The Alchemist, I tried to read another (can’t remember the title) but it too was pretty bad, making no sense.

I’m afraid my answers will be pretty boring this week…
1. None at the moment.
2. None and they are now releasing so many these days it’s hard to keep track.
3. I can’t remember the last time I wore one. It used to be a classic black leather at the knee. I may start wearing it again in the Fall who knows? 🙂
4. Neither really although some Tartan are kind of nice. I must say that Vichy prints are real cute.
5. They’re ok but except for neon flip flops they’re not really my thing.

beautifulwithbrains May 26, 2013 - 6:07 pm

Icaria, I need to try that dried beans trick.

I can’t keep up with current MAC collections either, there are too many! But I still remember a few old ones that were really creative and original. I miss those days.

Tavia May 30, 2013 - 6:29 pm

Hey 🙂 I just bought a pair of fuchsia neon flip flops last week and a small fuchsia neon bag to go with them. 🙂 I like to wear this combination when I go to market or to the store and I don’t wear makeup cause everyone is looking at my feet and at my face so it’s relaxing :)))

Icaria May 30, 2013 - 7:59 pm

Oh Tavia that is so smart! I had not thought about that aspect, I’ll keep it in mind! 😀
