Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.41

by Gio

Hello everyone,

it’s time again for some random ramblings! Ready? Here we go:

Juliette Has A Gun Discovery Kit

I’ve already mentioned the Juliette Has A Gun Discovery Kit on the blog before, but now I thought I’d give you a glimpse of how it looks like. The kit, which is only €7,90, contains samples of all the 8 scents in the line. And each trial size vial (2ml) comes in its own cute little envelop! Inside each one of them, you’ll also find a small card with the description and olfactory notes of each scent. How adorable is that? Delivery is free and if you decide to buy one of the scents after you’ve tried it, you can use the exclusive code that comes with the set to deduct its price from your online order. You only have 3 months to do so though. If you love perfume and have always wanted to try one of Juliette Has A Gun scents, this is a wonderful opportunity to do so without breaking the bank.

What I’m Reading Now

The Letters of Queen Victoria, Vol.III of III by A.C. Benson. As the title says, this is a compilation of letters written by and to Queen Victoria, plus some memorandums jotted down by Her Majesty and her husband Prince Albert between the years 1854-1861. Although some of the letters are personal, most of them are about political affairs of the time, which can be boring to most people. I, however, find them quite interesting as they allow you to get a glimpse of what was really going on behind the scenes of those important events we only read about in history school books, which only relate a very short, often politically correct and so biased, account of them. It also makes you realise how little power the Queen already had back then, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but she seems to have been stuck with a few politicians who were more interested in getting their own way and advancing in their own careers than serving the country and you can just feel (and share, as let’s face it, we often feel the same towards some of our modern politicians) her frustration at not being able to do much about it. The book, which is available for free at Project Gutenberg is also very long so I’d only recommend it to those who are obsessed about the Victorian era.

Sunday Survey, Vol.120

1. Do you like audiobooks?
I think audiobooks are great for people who don’t have a lot of time to read as you can listen to them while doing something else. However, I don’t really listen to them. I just don’t feel the need to as reading is something I’ve always loved and made time for.

2. Is there such a thing as something being too pigmented?
I would love to say no because I love pigmented products, but I’ll have to say it depends. I don’t mind, for instance, if a pigmented lipstick is drying as I can always apply lip balm underneath, but I don’t like it when products stain my skin and nails. And, being fair-skinned, I also find it difficult to use pigmented blushes without ending up looking like a clown.

3. Are you wearing nail polish on your toes at the moment?
Yes. It’s still warm enough here to wear open shoes (although I’m opting for flats more and more) so I’m trying to keep my feet looking as nice as possible. At the moment, I’m wearing a pinkish red shade from Esprit, which has sadly been discontinued.

4. Braids or ponytails?
Ponytails are more convenient, but I think braids are prettier.

5. What do you think of Google Plus so far?
I haven’t made my mind up yet. I find it difficult to keep up with Twitter and Facebook, so I’m not sure I should join another social network. Are there any good reasons why anyone should join this particular one?

1. Do you like audiobooks? As you said, they are great for people who don’t have time to read but I never listen to one. I like the old traditional method of reading a book.:)
2. Is there such a thing as something being too pigmented? Not for me 🙂
3. Are you wearing nail polish on your toes at the moment? Yes, a black one.
4. Braids or ponytails? Both work great for me but when I’m in a hurry it’s always a ponytail that wins the fight.
5. What do you think of Google Plus so far? Honestly, I just made a facebook account for my blog this year and Google Plus would be too much for me atm, considering I also have a Twitter account, not my mention my personal accounts. I can’t even remember all the passwords really so I would say NO to another social network. I’m thinking about opening an account on Pinterest but I’m still not 100% sure. I can’t be 100% dedicated to every account on the social networks so …..the simple the better in my case the fewer the better 🙂 Who know, in 5 years maybe we should have like 10 accounts on 10 different social networks…I don’t know how it will work out for me. 🙂

beautifulwithbrains September 30, 2012 - 7:16 pm

Tavia, I feel the same about social networks. I’m always wondering whether I should join Pinterest and Google Plus but I find it so hard to keep up with Facebook and Twitter that I’m not sure I could have time for another network, unless there would be an excellent reason to join it of course. I think it’s better to stick to those you know you can maintain and be dedicated to.

1. Do you like audiobooks?
– Not really keen on them, it’s just different! but I have listened to a few during my childhood days 😀

2. Is there such a thing as something being too pigmented?
– Never! It’d a shame if it’s not pigmented at all.

3. Are you wearing nail polish on your toes at the moment?
– Yes i do.

4. Braids or ponytails?
– Ponytails!

5. What do you think of Google Plus so far?
– Not much of it, and not too keen either since there are already so many existing social media.

beautifulwithbrains October 1, 2012 - 5:40 am

Xin, it seems like a new social media network is popping up every few months, doesn’t it? It’s become so hard to keep up!

Thanks so much for the heads up about JHAG set, will definitely order it for myself!
1. Do you like audiobooks? I like reading books, not listening.
2. Is there such a thing as something being too pigmented? Not for me…
3. Are you wearing nail polish on your toes at the moment? Just took it off several days ago.
4. Braids or ponytails? non. I usually wear my hai in a bun when I want it up!
5. What do you think of Google Plus so far? I don’t use.

beautifulwithbrains October 1, 2012 - 10:32 am

Marina, you’re welcome. It’s a wonderful set, I’m sure you’ll love it. 🙂

Janessa October 4, 2012 - 12:29 am

I love the concept of a perfume kit to try one brand’s fragrances. I’m going to keep ‘Juliette Has A Gun’ on my wishlist.
I laughed when you said you recommend the book to people obsessed with the era. 😛
1. Yes! I looked up some online audiobooks and listened to some stories while doing work and I even fell asleep listening to one. :] Thanks to your advice!
2. Yes, there definitely is. My daily blushes can’t be too pigmented because I just have to sweep on some color without much thought on most days and I can’t afford to blend heavily (which also affects my sunscreen sometimes). I don’t think eyeshadow or lipstick can be too pigmented though 😀
3. Nope, no nail polish on my toes. I loved OPI Bubble Bath for my toes (light clean pink) but I ran out 😮
4. When I had longer hair, I’d often opt for the pony because it’s easier but I love braids much more. Now that I have short hair, I do braids quite often and secure them with pins.
5. I have it but I don’t use it. I don’t use Facebook aside from the occasional messages. I like to write though-out letters more (snail-mail and e-mail). :]

The art show was fabulous! I didn’t get to do any eyeshadow look because I headed there straight from class. I ended up wearing that dress along with a lace jacket over it. (the biggest picture)

Everyone there was someone important in a company or lead animator for Disney. I was shocked how beautiful everything was. There were waiters bringing food and collecting glasses. :] Thanks, Gio! Next time I wear it again, I’ll do your makeup look!

What outfit would you recommend for a Christmas party? I’m going to one this year and I trust your fashion senses. :]

beautifulwithbrains October 4, 2012 - 9:44 pm

Janessa, I wish all perfume brands had such kits. It’s an inexpensive way for us to try new scents and for brands to entice customers.

I agree with you that there is no such thing as a too pigmented eyeshadow or lipstick. But a too pigmented blush can be difficult to use, especially if you have pale skin.

I’m glad you had a great time at the art show. Sounds like a very exciting event. You make me wish I had been there too. 🙂 And that lace jacket is so pretty, love it!

Mmm can I have more details about the party, like it’s a formal event or a simple party with only close friends? I wouldn’t wanna recommend something too or less formal or a mishap like that. 🙂

Janessa October 5, 2012 - 1:05 am

Oh, that’s right, thanks! The party should be casual and fun with friends, some close, others not. Absolutely nothing formal. I also dress more classic if that helps, I figured you’d be the right one to ask since you’re a classy lady yourself. :]
I would rather show up overdressed though :D.
Even colors or fabric-types would be awesome. Thank you and have you heard that you’re simply wonderful?

beautifulwithbrains October 7, 2012 - 12:53 pm

Janessa, I agree that it’s always best to be overdressed than underdressed and if you wear classic clothes, then you can’t really go wrong. Personally, I like gold or red dresses, maybe with some lace detail, for the holidays, but if you think these shades are too predictable you can try pink or coral instead. You could also pair a smart red blouse/top with a gold skirt. As for the fabric, I guess it depends on how cold it is and what you’re going to do. If you’ll be dancing, you don’t wanna wear fabrics that will make you sweat too much, so your best options is layers. You can wear a chiffon dress with plenty of layered fabric or a shrug that you can easily take off when you feel too hot. If you need more details, just ask.

And aww thank you. You’re too nice! 😳

Janessa October 9, 2012 - 10:34 pm

Thanks a bunch, Giorgia! :] I’ve followed along your sunscreen misconceptions debate and you said everything really well, perfectly backed up with concrete facts. I’m really glad you tried your best to help her. You wrote a whole article right there!

beautifulwithbrains October 10, 2012 - 5:17 am

You’re welcome and thank you. 😳

Salix October 6, 2012 - 9:50 pm

Does Juliette has gun ship to the US?

beautifulwithbrains October 7, 2012 - 12:38 pm

Salix, yes, I believe they do. But I think P&P is free only within Europe.
