Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.12

by Gio

Hello everyone,

ready for some random ramblings? Here we go:

Kindle

For the longest time I didn’t like the idea of ebooks, but then I found out that lots of books (mainly novels and history volumes written in past centuries whose copyright has now expired) that I was interested in reading but were out of print or just outrageously expensive were now available for free on the internet in ebook format and so, because they are not comfortable to read on a LCD screen, last year I finally gave in and bought a Kindle. And I have been obsessed with it ever since. As it turns out, reading books on Kindle is even more comfortable than reading print books (although I still buy those too every now and then). It is lightweight and easy to hold and carry around with you, doesn’t hurt or strains the eyes at all even after hours of reading and can store lots of books (I have more than 500 on there!). I’ve been reading a lot more since I’ve got it and now wish I had bought it sooner. It’s definitely one of my best purchases ever!

What I’m Reading Now

The Perfume Lover by Denyse Beaulieu. I was sent this book by PR for consideration and will post a full review soon, so for now, I’ll leave you with the blurb: “What if the most beautiful night in your life inspired a fragrance? Denyse Beaulieu is a respected fragrance writer; it is her world, her love, her life. When she was growing up, perfume was forbidden in her house, spurring a childhood curiosity that went on to become an intellectual and sensual passion. It is this passion she pursued all the way to Paris, where she now lives, and entered the secretive world of the perfume industry. But little did she know that it would lead her to achieve a fragrance lover’s wildest dream… When Denyse tells a famous perfumer of a sensual night spent in Seville under an orange tree in full blossom, wrapped in the arms of a beautiful young man, the story stirs his imagination and together they create a scent that captures the essence of that night. This is the story of that perfume. As the unique creative collaboration unfolds, the perfume-in-progress conjures intimate memories, leading Beaulieu to make sense of her life through scents. Throughout, she weaves the evocative history of perfumery into her personal journey, in an intensely passionate voice: the masters and the masterpieces; the myths and the myth-busting, down to the molecular mysteries that weld our flesh to flowers… The Perfume Lover is an unprecedented account of the creative process that goes into composing a fragrance, and a uniquely candid insider’s view into the world and history of fragrance. Your world will never smell the same.”

Your weekly ramblings are posted earlier today! I haven’t taken my shower yet!!

1. Three things you’re good at?
I can’t think of three things right now, but I’m very good at finding people who can help me improve my career. I was even asked to train younger managers on it!

2. What products work for others but don’t for you?
Sigma brushes? Most people rave about them, I didn’t like them at all.

3. Do you sleep with socks on?
No, I hate socks. The first thing I do when I get home is to take off my socks. I love summer because I can wear sandals without socks.

4. Statement rings or statement necklaces?
I’m partial to statement bracelets!

5. How do you feel about green eyeliner?
I think colored liner is an interesting way to include a subtle pop of color on your eyes!

K, oops, sorry!

That’s a great talent to have. I’d want to be trained by you on it too! 🙂

And I agree about colored liners. 🙂

Eyegraffiti, I think both print books and ebooks have their pros and cons. Nothing beats the feeling of having a real book in your hands, turning its pages and smelling them too. But I think ereaders are perfect for those books that you know you are going to read once and never again and would just take up a lot of space in my room, or when you travel. Plus, they tend to cost less and, if like me, you like to read books printed in past centuries, you can easily find them for free online. But I still buy history books or books from my fave authors in print form as I like that better.

Oh, I love my Kindle 🙂 Especially as so many books that I love are available free – eg Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen – definitely good, and less books to try to fit on our bulging bookcases. Also – there are quite a lot of popular children’s books (eg the Horrid Henry books – that’s been useful when I’ve forgotten to bring the kids’ books along).

1. Three things you’re good at? Hmmm, maybe maths (my degree subject), embroidery and listening to children chatter for hours, remembering most of it later lol!
2. What products work for others but don’t for you? Oh lots – I’m allergic to so many things, especially cheaper eye cosmetics. And the Vitamin E range from Body Shop that everyone loves? Brings me out in dreadful rashes!
3. Do you sleep with socks on? No, never – hate socks!
4. Statement rings or statement necklaces? Statement necklaces.
5. How do you feel about green eyeliner? Love it!

Viv, yay another Kindle lover! It’s awesome, isn’t it? And that’s why I love ebooks. There are so many available for free and they don’t take up much room. My bookshelf is already bursting with books, so unless it’s a book I know I’ll truly love and gonna read again and again, I’d rather buy the ebook version.

And oh no! I’m sorry that you are allergic to lots of things, how awful!

3. No.

4. I prefer necklaces.

5. Love it! A favourite is MAC Undercurrent Pearlglide Intense Eye Liner.

Can’t wait to read your review of that book! Fragrance writing, if done well, definitely sucks me in.

1. Three things you’re good at?
Listening to friends (so I’ve been told), walking into walls, and procrastinating.
2. What products work for others but don’t for you?
There are a bunch of mascaras everyone seems to rave about, but they smudge like crazy on me.
3. Do you sleep with socks on?
Nope, but I do use an electric heating blanket.
4. Statement rings or statement necklaces?
This is tough! I think I have to go with statement rings, only b/c almost all my favorite rings are statement rings, while my favorite necklaces are split up between statement & dainty.
5. How do you feel about green eyeliner?
Love it!

I love this post! It’s always good to ramble once in a while. 🙂 My unlucky boyfriend gets the most of my rambling. Haha!

Thanks for the link, by the way!

1. Three things you’re good at?
> Makeup… eating… and sleeping. Lol!

2. What products work for others but don’t for you?
> This is a tough one. NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams… hmm.. Wow I’m actually just sitting here clueless thinking about this. I think that’s it for now. Haha!

3. Do you sleep with socks on?
> Only when I’m cold… Which is super rare in my country! Once in a while when I feel like moisturizing I do, though!

4. Statement rings or statement necklaces?
> RINGS! Between my prominent birthmark on my neck and the cleavage…I think I have too much going on around my chest area to wear statement necklaces 🙁

5. How do you feel about green eyeliner?
I would rock it! 🙂

Chriselle, you’re welcome.

I too like every now and then to apply a lotion or cream on my feet and then put socks on. They are so soft afterwards!
