What I’m Reading Now

Getting Waisted: A Survival Guide to Being Fat in a Society That Loves Thin by Monica Parker
This book has a very misleading title. When I picked it up, I thought it would give some practical advice to fat women about how to survive in a society obsessed with being thin that constantly puts them down. As it turns out, it’s not a survival guide at all. Instead, it’s a beautiful biography. Monica Parker has always struggled with her weight, and here, she bravely shares her insecurities about her body, the many fad, often dangerous, diets, she’s tried in an effort to lose weight, and all the obstacles she had to face in her life. As Monica recalls her life, from childhood till now, the readers gets to see how the enviroment she lived in, and the problems she had to face contributed to her weight problems, and how, in turn, her weight affected every aspect of her life, creating a vicious circle that’s hard to break. And yet, Monica, thanks to her bubbly personality and sense of humour which have never left her, has also managed to carve out a career she loves and form a family with a wonderful man who adores her just the way she is. I highly recommend this book to everyone, as it makes you understand what it is like to be fat in our modern society and what these people go through every day. It’s not pretty, but it’s by understanding that we can begin to heal and solve the problem. Available at amazon.

Sunday Survey, Vol.195

1. A movie that scared you as a child?
I don’t remember the name, but it’s the movie where Arnold Schwarzenegger’s head explodes. I’ve only ever seen the advert on TV, but it scared the hell out of me then, and even now it makes me a little uneasy.

2. When was the last time you had a makeup makeover?
About three years ago at an Estee Lauder event. I love to get makeovers, but there aren’t many opportunities for that when you live in a small town. Most shops here either don’t offer the service or they only have a MUA apply on you the products that you’re interested in buying, just to see if they suit you, how you like the finish and stuff like that.

3. Something you need to do today?
Take some photos for the blog.

4. Truth or dare?
Truth. I hate doing dares, because they are often either stupid or sexual. But with the right crowd, I may go for a dare. I usually prefer truths, though, especially because my life is pretty boring, so there’s little risk of me revealing something I don’t want others to know.

5. Is it still worth it to have a facebook page for your blog?
If you follow me on social media, you know I’ve become more active on twitter, google plus and pinterest. Facebook would be next on the list, but they keep reducing the reach of people who sees your posts, so I’m unsure whether it’s worth my time to revamp the page. What do you think? Do you still follow blogs that way or have you given up on FB too?

1. A movie that scared you as a child? I can’t really remember as a child but I know that I was very intrigued, frightened and annoyed by the Texas Chain Saw Massacre.
2. When was the last time you had a makeup makeover? Last year I guess when Sinziana Iaru did my makeup. I also posted on the blog that look.
3. Something you need to do today? Just relax…I’m in a small vacation visiting a dear friend.
4. Truth or dare? Dare 🙂
5. Is it still worth it to have a facebook page for your blog? For me yes, visitors like to send me PM messages of leave their comments at the bottom of a post. I’m also on Twitter but in Europe is not that popular. 🙂

Tavia, you make a good point about PMs. I don’t get many, but I wouldn’t want to take away that opportunity for my readers to connect with me. I guess I’m just scared that soon everyone with a page will have to pay to get their followers see their updates. That’s the way it’s heading, and I don’t like it.

Have fun with your friend and enjoy your vacation!

1. The movie you’re referring to is Total Recal, weird but I actually like that scene for the special effects. 🙂 One that really scared me was a vampire movie from the 60s I watched with cousins when I was real young. I saw the movie years later and laughed at the bad special effects. I mean you could litteraly see the wires used for the bat supposed to represent Dracula! 🙂
2. I can’t recall. I’ve been offered several times but I don’t like having my face touched. Could be because I used to do makeup myself I just don’t know.
3. Rest but I have some cleaning and cooking to do for the upcoming week. 🙁
4. I’ve always hated that game and I don’t think I’ve ever participated truly.
5. I do have a facebook page but no link on my blog because it leads to somebody else’s page. It’s really weird and I was never able to correct it. In fact I don’t like facebook and much prefer Twitter.

Icaria, thanks for the title. Yep, that was it. It scared me so much. Back then, I used to find special effects used in movies quite scary, but looking back at them now, you’re right, they’re quite funny. Although it’s amazing to see what they managed to do without all the technology we have today. 🙂

I love the gowns that you posted. I’d love to try one on just to feel the weight of it ..and see how (perhaps) difficult it was to move around.

1. A movie that scared you as a child?
Nightmare on Elm Street

2. When was the last time you had a makeup makeover?
Years ago and I’m not a fan. I feel that makeup artist put too much makeup on my face and I feel artificial.

3. Something you need to do today?
Drive back to San Diego from the desert – 2.5 to 3 hr drive.

4. Truth or dare?
Truth. I’m too old for dare .. lol.

5. Is it still worth it to have a facebook page for your blog?
I’m thinking no as I have zip subscribers, I think instagram is the way to go.

Monica, I’ve just finished reading a book about those clothes and they were quite uncomfortable. Apparently, you could only bend at the hips. The purpose was to make the body move in a graceful way to please the eyes. Whether the poor woman suffered, no one cared about! But I would love to try on one too, just to see what it felt like. They were stunning gowns indeed. 🙂

Makeup Morsels, there are too many social sites these days, aren’t they? It’s a struggle to keep up with them all, even if you only use two or three.

4. Truth or dare? truth, probably.
5. Is it still worth it to have a facebook page for your blog? Yes, it is, for sure.
