Sunday Random Ramblings, Vol.1

Changes

Well, only one actually and quite small, I think. As you know I post twice a day on weekends too and lately I’ve been thinking that’s a bit too much. As much as I enjoy (and I hope you do too) the Blogs We Love, Sunday Beauty Reads and Sunday Survey series, I think writing a short post for each of them is excessive and makes the blog look cluttered. So, I thought I’d just post all these things, plus a few more bits and bobs in just one post, titled Sunday Random Ramblings. What do you think?

GlossyBox

Finally GlossyBox has arrived in Italy too! For those who have never heard of it, GlossyBox is a subscription service. For €14,00 a month (p&p is free), you’ll receive five luxury beauty samples (we had six this month, yay!), some of which may be full size (this month, 3 out of 6 were). There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the Italian GlossyBox this month because the company had some problems with shipping issues so the cute boxes arrived a bit later than expected, and also because not all the products are from luxury and high-end brands like advertised on their site.

Considering they are a new company and have shown to actually listen to critics and complaints which they use to improve their service, I’ll cut them some slack for now. And even though some of the products are drugstore rather than high end, I’m still pleased with what I received. So, what does it contain? Inside I found a Lakshmi eyeshadow, Aquolina Body Milk, Nee Sensual Gloss, Costume National Eau De Parfum Scent, Decleor Aroma Night Creme Beaute De Nuit, Nour Sapone Di Aleppo (Aleppo Soap). Reviews, and my thoughts about GlossyBox, are coming soon!

What I’m Reading Now

Watership Down by Richard Adams. It’s basically a book about a bunch of rabbits that, fleeing from the intrusion of man in their home, are travelling through the English countryside to find a new place to live in. It sounds pretty boring, doesn’t it? I thought so too, especially because the beginning is quite slow, but I’m really enjoying it. The characters are rich and I love how Adams has given them their own culture, traditions and even language, yet they retain their animal characteristics. We follow the rabbits as they face all kinds of dangers, such as predators, diseases and men, struggling to survive and realise their dreams. And that’s what this book is about: survival, perseverance and friendship. Watership Down is a wonderful tale that will appeal to both children and adults alike.

Sunday Survey, Vol.82

1. Do you like flying?
Nope, I actually hate it. I’m not afraid of it or anything, it’s just that what with all the security measures at the airport, the stuff you can’t carry in your carry-on luggage anymore, the waiting around etc, it just gives me a headache, you know? And your head and ears feel awful during takeoff and landing..

2. When you find an amazing beauty product, do you tell everybody about it?
Yes! Well, everyone who I know is interested in makeup/skincare or I think may like it. And of course I blog about it too. 🙂

3. What can you see from your bedroom’s window?
My gran’s vegetable garden and my neightbours’ back garden.

4. Ketchup or mayonnaise?
It depends on the food really, but still I like mayonnaise more.

5. How do you feel about over-the-knees boots?
I think they can look nice on the right person and with jeans/leggings, but they can also easily make you look trashy, so I’d rather avoid them.

Your turn now!

Oh, I love Watership Down – makes me cry every time – one of those books where you can just feel it welling up inside, and you just have to let the tears flow!!

Glossybox – I’ve got slightly mixed feelings at the moment, the November box over here was just so-so, and they’ve got one more month to put it right before I unsubscribe! Too many perfume samples, which I don’t really like – I have my Miller Harris, and don’t need anything else 🙂

Like the new format 🙂

Survey….
1. Do you like flying?
Fairly indifferent – haven’t actually flown since we had kids, apart from one trip to Lapland, so that’s a long time, so the security aspects haven’t yet affected me at all.

2. When you find an amazing beauty product, do you tell everybody about it?
No, not really – somehow not many people I know are interested! That’s why I read the blogs – people to ‘talk’ to!

3. What can you see from your bedroom’s window?
Our garden – stretches up about 100metres to Epsom Downs, so no houses visible (well, that’s the view over the back, to the front we can see the road and the houses over the road – not quite so nice!)

4. Ketchup or mayonnaise?
Neither thanks, really really dislike both. Like good old brown sauce if anything – but even that I can take or leave.

5. How do you feel about over-the-knees boots?
Don’t really like them!

Viv, it’s a wonderful book, isn’t it? It definitely brought a few tears to my eyes..

The November Glossybox wasn’t liked much here either because it contained some drugstore products. Personally, as long as a product works well, I don’t care about its price or what brand it is. But too many parfumes samples would be annoying indeed. Fragrance is such a personal thing. A fragrance sample every now and again is ok, but skincare or makeup ones would be more appreciated by everyone I think.

I’m glad you like it. 🙂

And that’s the reason why I started reading blogs and launched my own too. I don’t have many friends who are into makeup and wanted someone to talk to about it and share my passion with. 🙂

I still haven’t read Watership Down, but it has been stuck in my mind ever since my mother described it as a wonderful book, when I was a child.

Survey:
1. No, not really. I’m far from a frequent flyer, I’ve been on a plane just a few times, but yeah, as you said – waiting, and this, and that…

2. I want to, but I stop myself because not everyone’s interested in that 😛 .

3. My front yard, the pub and a gambling parlour next to it.
When it gets warmer we have trouble learning/reading/going to sleep because of the folk music coming from the pub 😛 .

4. Mayonnaise, although I do like ketchup, too. And I love the mayo+ketchup combo.

5. The same as you.
I love some of the styling in fashion mags… I haven’t seen anybody pull them off in real life, tho.

I like the new concept, but I’d love to see different sections differentiated more – slightly bigger titles than usual? titles in the center? Hm…

Ana, you have to read it! I had put off reading it until now because I thought a book about rabbits would be boring but it really isn’t. It’s just a wonderful tale with a deep meaning and is very emotional at times.

I can sympathise about having trouble sleeping because of the music from the pub. My bf lives near one too and when I stay over at his place during the summer, we can hear the music until pretty late at night. You just wanna go to bed but know you won’t be able to sleep because of it..

I’m glad you like it and I agree with you about differentiating the sections more. I wanted the titles to be bigger but I couldn’t figure out how to do it. I’m not that techy really… I’ll try again and if I can’t do it, then I’ll try to put the titles in the center and see if that’s better.. 🙂

Oh, I will!

My master’s studies began, so, again, I just go from reading on Chinese 17th century pidgin to reading on Serbian traditional accents, to writing hanzi for my Chinese class, to coming up with a theme for my onomastics paper.

So the rest of my life is on hold for now.

It may be a good thing I couldn’t start that blog in September or October…

Ana, good luck with your studies! I was wondering why you hadn’t opened your blog yet but of course real life comes first and it’s best to concentrate on your studies right now. 🙂

I love the new format, Gio! I’m glad you have some cool products in GlossyBox. I tried something similar before and I was not so happy with it so I stopped.

Dao, I’m glad you like it too.

I’m very happy with what I received especially because there were some products that I had been wanting to try for ages and others that aren’t easily available in my small town. But subscriptions services like this can be quite risky as you’re never know what you’re going to get and there were quite a lot of girls who weren’t happy with what they got. I guess it comes down to personal tastes and needs in the end and I’m sorry the service you subscribed too didn’t live up to your expectations.

Xin, what a shame you don’t have anything like this in Malaysia yet. About the products, I think it takes time to convince luxury brands to work with them, so at the beginning especially you can receive some products that’ll disappoint you.
