Product Review: YSL Opium Vapeurs De Parfum Eau De Toilette Legere

by Gio

Opium Vapeurs de Parfum

Name: Opium Vapeurs De Parfum
Brand: Yves Saint Laurent
Size: 50ml
Price: £50.00

What I liked:
– lovely oriental floral scent
– good staying power for an eau de toilette
– stays close to the skin
– the packaging

What I didn’t like:
– isn’t very similar to the original Opium
– not original

In these days of insipid floral bouquets and sickly sweet gourmand concoctions, most women find Opium, the iconic and rich spicy oriental fragrance by YSL, too bold and impossible to wear. A lot more wearable are the many flankers the brand released throughout the years to capitalize on the success of Opium, such as Opium Vapeurs De Parfum.

The fragrant fumes this new edition of Opium emits are only vaguely reminiscent of the original fragrance. Opium Vapeurs De Parfum has oriental notes and spicy whiffs, but it is mainly a tame floral scent. It opens with a zesty mandarin note sprinkled with just a touch of pink pepper. The opening has a refreshing, slightly bitter and darker vibe that seems to promise the rest of the composition will be intriguing and mysterious.

But it isn’t. The heart is a subdued floral bouquet. The orange blossom and jasmine are so well-blended together that it is quite difficult to distinguish them clearly. Unfortunately, though, I could smell something slightly synthetic about this accord that not even the addition of incense is able to hide or improve.

Maybe that’s because the incense is kinda tame too. It’s the clean rather than the smokey variety that is used here. Incense hangs around in the drydown too, where it is joined by a blend of vanilla, patchouli and vetiver. Again, the accord is sensual, but subdued.

Its tameness, coupled with the fact that it stays close to the skin, makes this scent suitable for a wide variety of occasions, from a shopping spree with a friend, to dinner with your family, or even the office. Fans of the original Opium, though, will hardly find this a pro. They will mostly be disappointed that the scent isn’t richer and headier. How long it lasts? Almost 7 hours on my skin, which isn’t bad at all for an eau de toilette.

YSL Opium Vapeurs De Parfum is a tame oriental floral scent suitable for most occasions. However, it doesn’t resemble the original Opium much, and the composition isn’t particularly original or remarkable either. Staying power is good for an eau de toilette, though.

Rating: 3.5/5

I’m intrigued! I just’t can’t stand the original anymore because I did wear it a lot. This to me even if it lacks originality, sounds “pretty” and although I may not go for a full size I’ll try to get a sample to see how it goes. 🙂

Icaria, it is very pretty indeed. I think that, if it had been a stand alone scent rather than a flanker, I may have appreciate it more. This one only has hints of the original and will appeal even to those who dislike or are tired of that. 🙂
