These days, it’s not uncommon to see celebrities out and about wearing sweatpants and not a stitch of makeup on their faces. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, it would have been unthinkable even just 20 years ago.
Back then, a star would never have dreamt of leaving the house looking anything less than flawless. Joan Collins belongs to that time. She’s the epitome of glamour, and a beauty icon for women all over the world.
Last year, Joan finally launched her first beauty line, Timeless Beauty. Aiming to inspire women and give them the tools they need to feel beautiful at any age, the range features classic and wearable shades housed in chic gold cases and bottles.
It’s also perfect for busy women always on-the-go, who only have a few minutes to do their makeup in the morning, or want to do quick touch-ups throughout the day.
Take the Compact Duo Powder & Lipstick, for example. Featuring, as you’ve probably guessed from the name, the Meticulous Skin Perfecting Powder and the Divine Lips Lipstick in Katrina, it’s the perfect accessory for touch-ups on-the-go, wherever you are.
Like Joan said, now “I can easily find 2 of my most important cosmetics without having to rummage at the bottom of my bag. I can touch up my face quickly with a pat of powder and a sweep of lipstick. Perfect!”
The duo is available in several shades. Mine is in Katrina, the character Joan played in Monaco, a 1986 spy movie (all her shades are named after one of her film or TV roles. How cool is that?).
It owns its name to the lipstick shade inside, a warm neutral brown with a beautiful sheen that suits every skintone. It’s one of those shades that instantly warms up the complexion and can be worn on any occasion, be it work or play.
Fairly pigmented, Katrina has a creamy texture that glides smoothly on the lips, leaving behind a semi-opaque coat of colour that can be easily built up to full coverage.
Although it’s not as hydrating as I’d like it to be, it doesn’t dry out my lips either. More importantly, it lasts for 4 hours on my lips (most lippies barely hang around for 2) and is able to withstand a light snack. I’m impressed.
The Meticulous Powder is neutral toned and works well for most skintones. I was afraid it’d be too dark for my pale skin, but nope, it’s a good match. Phew!
Having said that, I’m surprised the compact doesn’t come with a translucent powder. Yes, a coloured one provides better coverage, but it isn’t as universal and versatile as a translucent powder. If you have very pale or dark skin, you’d have to buy the powder and lipstick separately, which kinda defeats the purpose of putting them together in a compact.
The powder comes with its own puff to make touchups on the go easier. But, when I’m at home, I use my own brush. As always, it does a much better job. Finely milled, it glides smoothly on the skin. Its silky soft texture feels so lightweight and natural on.
I’ve never piled it on, but, so far, it has never looked cakey. And it helps my foundation last that little bit longer, especially on my oilier t-zone. I don’t apply it on my dry cheeks because foundation lasts all day there anyway. Unless I have a blemish to hide. The powder helps with that too.
The golden case is both practical and classy. It’s something I’m proud to take out in public whenever I need to retouch my lipstick or powder. The mirror inside makes application even easier.
The Nail Lacquers are great for on-the-go application too. Mine dries really quickly, so you can just paint your nails and get out the door five minutes later.
It’s opaque in one coat as well, which is great for when you’re in a rush. Or, for those patientless girl who, like me, can’t be bothered to apply more than one coat. When it comes to nail polish, I like instant gratification, and this one delivers it.
The nail polish goes on smoothly too. No streaking. But the formula is on the thick side, so be careful not to apply too much. Once on, it lasts up to three days without chipping. That’s if you skip the top coat (guilty as charged). If you do things properly, you can enjoy a perfect manicure for longer.
The colour? Katrina, of course. It’s a neutral brown shade that perfectly matches the colour of the lipstick. That makes it even easier to get ready in time. No need to spend ages thinking what to pair with what. Match your lipstick to your nails, and off you go.
And doesn’t the packaging remind you of anything? So Louboutin! It’s cool and chic, but I’m afraid I could hurt someone with it. Or poke myself in the eye. So far, that’s never happened, thank goodness.
Something I didn’t expect to like is the I Am Woman perfume. It’s so different from all the other celebrity fragrances out there. And thank goodness for that! If I have to smell another uber sweet, boringly common scent, I’ll feel sick. Who can stand those? Well, teens, I guess.
But I’m a woman. I don’t want to smell like I’ve spent the entire day in a candy shop. I want a scent that screams elegance, maturity, and power. I Am Woman is all of these things.
It opens up with a sparkling citrusy burst of bergamot sweetness with peach juice. The peaches here have a subtle boozy quality to them that prevent them from becoming too sweet.
All too soon, the opening notes give way to a floral heart. The fragrant smell of jasmine and rose blends with green herbs and mossy notes that make me feel like I’m in a blooming garden somewhere on the Mediterranean coast.
The base is sensual and sophisticated. The dark sandalwood and patchouli base, with just a hint of musk, is sweetened by a few dollops of amber and vanilla. The sweet and dark notes create a nice balance that prevents I Am Woman from becoming both too masculine and too girly.
Surprisingly, I Am Woman isn’t a loud fragrance. It tends to stay quite close to the skin for pretty much the entire day. Others can smell it, but not from a mile away!
If you fall in love with the scent too, get the Joan Collins 2 Piece I Am Woman Body & Soul Collection. It features I Am Woman in a handy mini size and a room fragrance diffuser with 12 reeds. The set makes both you and your home smell absolutely gorgeous. What a decadent treat!
It’s not often that I’m impressed with a celebrity’s beauty line. But Joan Collins really raised the bar. Her Timeless Beauty line features timeless shades perfect for women always on-the-go. With their help, you’ll always look polished and flawless.
