Name: Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Icon
Brand: Hourglass
Size: full size 3g, and travel size 1g
Price: full size $28.00, and travel size $10.00

From Hourglass’ website:
Densely pigmented, silky smooth and lightweight formula glides on without tackiness, and sets to a modern matte finish.
Opaque coverage creates bold, vibrant and dramatic-looking lips.
Contains a breathable film of intense pigment that instantly bonds to the lips and treats them with skin-conditioning emollients, fruit extracts and vitamins.
Custom doe foot applicator allows for precision application.

What I liked:
– very flattering blue-based red with a matte finish
– very pigmented, a little goes a long way
– longlasting

What I didn’t like:
– drying; feels uncomfortable on the lips
– fades unevenly
– doe foot applicator is useless; you need a lip brush to apply it properly

Shortcomings are a lot easier to justify in cheap products, aren’t they?

If a $5 lipstick dries your lips like crazy, you top it up with lip balm and think no more of it. But when a $28.00 lippie does the same… argh! So frustrating!

Dryness is often a problem with matte formulas, like Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick. It feels very uncomfortable on the lips, urging you to reach for your lip balm as quickly as possible, even though you know that may compromise the matte finish. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. At least not if you prefer a hint of shine on your lips (I do).

There’s another reason why a lip balm isn’t optional with this lipstick range. If your pout is already dry, you’ll end up with flaky lips. Not to mention, all your dry patches will be enhanced, and who wants that?

The shade I have, Icon, is particularly demanding. A deep, blue-based red, it packs a punch. Very pigmented, you need to be extra careful with application. Forget the doe foot applicator it comes with. That doesn’t work well with this formula.

Instead, just grab your lip brush and start filling in your lips slowly. Lining your lips with a lip liner is also a good idea. It will help you stay within the edges of your lips while you apply the colour.

So, after all this pain, how long does Icon hangs around? Well, that depends. If you only have a small snack, it can last up to 6 hours on the lips. Quite impressive, isn’t it? But not so fast.

Icon fades unevenly. When you have a proper meal, the colour around the edges of your pout remains intact, but everywhere else, it fades. You need to retouch it, but, because you need a lip brush to do the job properly, doing so outside the house isn’t that practical.

Despite all this, I’m in love with Icon. The shade is very flattering on a wide range of skintones, and, whenever I wear it, it never fails to give me a confidence boost. Is that worth $28.00? Maybe not, but luckily this shade is available in a 1g travel size that retails at $10.00. Much more reasonable. And, because a little goes a long way, it’ll last you for ages.

Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick In Icon is a gorgeous and flattering blue-based red with a matte finish. Very pigmented and longlasting, it fades unevenly and dries out your lips.

This is such a nice, classic red. I find exfoliating my lips beforehand helps when using drying liquid lipstick products like this!

Lexie, that’s a great tip! I love the colour and staying power but wish it were less drying. 🙂

I really like how this kind of red looks with your pale skin 😉 And I love Hourglass.

Marina, thank you! It’s a wonderful brand, isn’t it?

I almost bought this last spring, but after reading about a million reviews I decided to pass. It was the travel size I was looking at, but so many women talked about the dryness that I knew it would destroy my lips. But the shade is killer! It looks great on you. Worth a little discomfort? Could be

Allison, I love the pigmentation and staying power of this lippie, but the dryness really makes or breaks it. I think you really need to fall in love with the shade, or be willing to use lip balm even if that compromises the matte finish, to be able to put up with dryness and fully enjoy it.

Gio, do you have a fave long-lasting moisturizing lip color product? I’ve only found one I like and am getting tired of Revlon ColorStay Overtime.

Gio February 18, 2015 - 9:47 pm

Jean, I love Too Faced Melted Long Wear Lipstick. I know a couple of bloggers who find these lippies drying, but on me, they feel moisturizing and comfortable for about three hours. The colours last longer on the lips, but after 3 hours, you need to apply lip balm.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found a lippie that lasts for ages and always feels comfortable on. But I keep looking for one and, if I find it, I’ll let you know. 😉

The color is beautiful, but too bad it fades unevenly, I hate it when that happens! As for the flaky lips try exfoliating your lips and applying some lip balm before using drying lip products 🙂 x

Stavroula, thanks for the tip! I hate when lip products fade unevenly, especially when they are as bright and intense as this. It’s just so obvious! You really need to retouch it quickly.
