What’s one skincare tip you wish you had known earlier?

Beautiful with brains says: I wish I had known the importance of wearing sunscreen daily. I only started doing that in my mid-twenties.

I wish my parents never encouraged me to use the solarium. Though I only used it 5 times I think. I also sunburned a lot as a kid (being really pale), I wish my parents knew the risks and protected me and told me about the dangers.

beautifulwithbrains March 1, 2012 - 7:01 pm

Marloes, it’s a shame that the importance of wearing sunscreen wasn’t that known back then. My parents only made me wear it at the beach (and I rarely went there) and, being fair-skinned like you, I got my fair share of sunburns too. At least we know better now.

I would say the importance of washing your face before going to sleep. Back when I was a teen, I was lazy to wash my face and as a result, I got really bad pimples. Then, in high school, I started swimming and the zits just went away. All the water in the pool did a good job to wash my face 😀

beautifulwithbrains March 1, 2012 - 7:05 pm

Dao, it’s so important to wash our faces before going to sleep, I agree. There were times I didn’t either, and even went to sleep with my makeup on eeekkk. But I’m glad that swimming helped your skin. 🙂

Eyegraffiti March 1, 2012 - 10:24 pm

hm i would say, the weight of using good make up remover. okay, please make sure to sit down before reading this, but as young and foolish i was in the beginning of make up i did had a liquid hand soap as remover. curse me please! and yes it was a long time ago but still!
but hey, i know better now and hopefully that counts!

beautifulwithbrains March 2, 2012 - 7:06 am

Eyegraffiti, oh dear! That was really bad, but we all made mistakes in our teenage years and regret them when we’re older and know better. 🙂

Ditto for me! I really wish I had known how important sunscreen is……well, better late than never 🙂

beautifulwithbrains March 2, 2012 - 7:09 am

Harshleen, it’s a shame no one seemed to know how important that is back then. And sadly that are people that still ignore it now. But we know better at least. 🙂

Makeup Morsels March 2, 2012 - 6:26 am

Even though I was lucky enough to start wearing sunscreen regularly pretty early on, I still wish I knew even earlier. There were a few summer breaks where I would try to tan every day and lay out in the sun with no spf *shudders* now I know better at least!

beautifulwithbrains March 2, 2012 - 7:12 am

Makeup Morsels, I think pretty much everyone of us has done that at some point. It’s never to early to start using sunscreen I agree, but at least you started to use it pretty early on. 🙂

xin March 2, 2012 - 8:14 am

i wish i had known the danger of oily eyecream earlier! 🙁 i had some milea seeds due to the use of heavy eye cream when i was in teen -_- i should have just ignored the dark circles than to deal with the seeds now ><

beautifulwithbrains March 2, 2012 - 9:16 am

Xin, that happened to me too, so annoying! But at least we now know what creams to avod round the eye area.

plue March 3, 2012 - 2:38 am

like you Gio, i wish i had worn sunscreen earlier, i only started in my early twenties but at that time my freckles and spots are rather bad and nothing could save them now. sigh.

beautifulwithbrains March 4, 2012 - 7:52 pm

Plue, it really is a pity that only in the past few years we all have realised how important wearing sunscreen daily. Had we known it before, we could have avoided a lot of damage.

Annabella Freeman March 3, 2012 - 4:12 pm

I have to say I’m pretty lucky with my skin, although it’s oily and I have visible pores I think I’ve taken good care of it. Growing up lots of people in my family smoked and I never did or got much sun. I was punk/goth in high school so a tan didn’t go with my look.

Several years later I look people’s pics from high school on Facebook and you can see the sun damage. I’m hoping I’ll age naturally rather than looking leathery in a few years.

beautifulwithbrains March 4, 2012 - 7:56 pm

Annabella, that’s great that you’ve always been taken care of your skin. I’m sure you will age naturally and better than most people who like to tan. I don’t think some people realise how much the sun is to blame for premature aging.

Christina @ Hair Romance March 4, 2012 - 8:26 pm

Sunscreen is so important. I have always known that but only started wearing it consistently in the last few years. I was also guilty of sleeping in my makeup, so terrible for my skin.

beautifulwithbrains March 4, 2012 - 9:05 pm

Christina, I agree about sunscreen, it is so important! Sleeping with makeup on is another mistake too and one I think we’ve all done at some point.

Viv March 4, 2012 - 8:47 pm

Can’t really think of anything to be honest! The worst thing that I did (not strictly skin related though) was to put ‘Sun In’ on my hair one holiday on the Mediterranean – my red hair turned orange and straw-like in texture – that was AWFUL!

beautifulwithbrains March 4, 2012 - 9:06 pm

Viv, that sounds awful indeed! But I’m glad you have never made any serious skincare mistakes. 🙂

roxana March 13, 2012 - 6:07 pm

i still don’t wear sunscreen and im 26..i cant find a cream to not break me out that contains spf.I wish i wouldve used face scrubs earlier and invest more and be pickier abt. my shampooes and conditioners. And drink more water.

beautifulwithbrains March 13, 2012 - 6:55 pm

Roxana, what a shame! Wearing sunscreen is so important. Have you tried one with Zinc Oxide? They’re not always easily to find but ZO is not comedogenic so it may work for you.

roxana March 13, 2012 - 7:35 pm

do you have any brands name?x

beautifulwithbrains March 13, 2012 - 9:43 pm

Roxana, Badger Balm Sunscreen SPF 30 and Blue Lizard Spf30 Regular with Zinc Oxide Sunscreen are both good options.

roxana March 13, 2012 - 10:39 pm

ohh!thank you!im checking them out now!

beautifulwithbrains March 14, 2012 - 7:00 am

Roxana, you’re welcome.
