What I liked:
– lovely fruity patchouli gourmand scent
– sweet, but not overpoweringly so, and easy to wear
– good sillage and staying power
– the bottle
What I didn’t like:
– if you dislike sweet scents with green accents, this is not for you
– understated and unoriginal
– the price
Manifesto: a written statement declaring publicly the intentions, motives, or views of its issuer; it is derived from the Latin word manifestum, meaning clear or conspicuous. Unfortunately, there is nothing conspicuous about Manifesto, the new fragrance from YSL Laurent. Far from making a statement, Manifesto is easily and quickly forgettable.
Manifesto is a candy sweet and patchouli scent with fruity accents. It opens with a strong burst of green leaves laced with blackcurrent and sprinkled with citrusy, bergamot accents. This is my least favourite part of the scent. I don’t think this accord agrees with my body chemistry as the green notes take on a medicinal aroma on my skin which I’m not very fond of. Soon, the floral notes (a soft blend of green rose and jasmine) make a brief appearance before disappearing as fast as they had arrived.
The drydown is supposed to be woody and sightly oriental, but instead it’s simply gourmand, which was very disappointing for me. I love oriental scents, but Manifesto isn’t one. At this stage, it’s simply very sweet and sugary. A delicate, slightly woody patchouli note is layered over a gourmand accord of tonka bean, vanilla and almonds that becomes milder as the hours pass. Manifesto doesn’t overpower you with its sweetness.
It’s an understated scent, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and it means that you can wear it on any occasion without giving people a headache, but it lacks character. It’s nothing we haven’t all smelled a thousand times before. It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly good either. It’s not daring, It’s not distinctive. It’s not a manifesto. Only the bottle, shaped like a woman’s body, makes a statement. But it could contain any number of patchouli gourmand scents with fruity accents. You wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.
YSL Manifesto is a fruity patchouli gourmand scent that’s been done a million times before. Far from making a statement, it’s an understated and easy to wear scent that lasts for the entire day.
