Name: Calamity J
Brand: Juliette Has A Gun
What I liked:
– wonderful masculine scent for women
– if you love powdery, woody ambery scents, this is for you
– pretty bottle
What I didn’t like:
– if you like sweet floral scents, or dislike patchouli, this is not for you
When you shop for a new fragrance, are you tempted to check out masculine ones? Do you steal your men’s perfume and wear it yourself? I do. I like feminine scents but not the overly sweet floral fruity type that is saturating the market at the moment. I’m really sick of those and I’m craving something different, daring and ambiguous instead. Like Calamity J, a masculine fragrance dedicated to women.
Calamity J is a woody, amber fragrance without top notes that’s rough around the edges, but it is still feminine. It is inspired by Calamity J, the first woman cowboy who behaved, drank and shoot like a man. But the name can also be interpreted as Calamity Juliette, a woman with a rebellious streak. She’s confident, she’s headstrong and she lives her life as she sees fit. She breaks the rules and makes her own choices without caring about what anyone else thinks. But she does it wearing cashmere, stilettos and red lipstick.
Calamity J starts with a strong burst of patchouli and ambergris, with only a sprinkle of bergamot on top. Although the patchouli is quite clean, it still retains some of its animalistic tones which blend well with the creamy butteriness of amber. A feminine touch is added by powdery and dry iris. The drydown is a warm and sexy blend of musks and vanilla. Calamity J is very easy to wear. It’s woody and musky, powdery and creamy, and although longlasting, stays close to the skin.
Ricci, the creator of Juliette Has A Gun, has taken the typical notes of men’s scents (deep, dark woods and amber), and with the help of powdery iris and sweet vanilla, has created a wonderful unisex blend that leans more towards the feminine end of the spectrum. It’s not for everyone though. I think some men can be put off by its powderiness, and those who dislike patchouli won’t appreciate how strong this note is in this scent. As for me, I love it. I think the concept is very clever and well-executed.
Juliette Has A Gun Calamity J is a masculine fragrance designed for women. It is a simple woody-ambery blend strong on the patchouli and sweetened by powdery iris and creamy vanilla. Although the scent is very longlasting, it is also subtle.
