givenchy ange ou demon

What I liked:
– if you like very sweet scents with just a hint of spiciness, this is for you
– great staying power and sillage
– beautiful bottle

What I didn’t like:
– the sweet and spicy accords seem to belong to two different scents
– boring and banal
– if you don’t like very sweet scents, this is not for you

There are an angel and a demon in all of us, constantly fighting. Every day, we have to choose whether to listen to the little angel asking us to do the right thing or to give in to the pleasures and benefits the nasty demon tempts us with if we do the wrong one. It’s this dichotomy between good and evil, the sweet, innocent girl and the sultry temptress that Ange Ou Demon by Givenchy attempts to capture. Which one of the two will win?

If you’re familiar with Givenchy scents, you’ve probably guessed right: it’s the sweet girl who wins the fight, knocking the angel down with a flower-covered bomb of sweetness. I was expecting this as most Givenchy scents tend to be overly sweet and girly, but I was still disappointed. Judging by the notes (mandarin, cumin, saffron, lily, orchid, ylang ylang, oakmoss and vanilla), I was hoping the two souls of the composition would be more balanced. Maybe they were in 2006 when the scent was first released, but like most fragrances nowadays, it must have undergone several reformulations that turned it into just another sweet scent, but with a hint of spiciness.

Ange Ou Demon opens with a strong, sweet burst of candied saffron and the subtlest whiff of mandarin. Soon, the floral bouquet of lily, orchard and ylang ylang, which has been sprinkled with too much vanilla, becomes cloying. The drydown is a woody vanilla accord. Just like the candied sweetness, there are some spicy hints in the background that are present throughout the scent, from start to finish. These subtle spicy notes help give a certain darkness to a composition that would otherwise be way too girly, but can’t save it from being just another floral gourmand scent.

In addition, these sweet and spicy accords aren’t that well-blended together. It’s like smelling two different scents that have been accidentally poured into the same bottle. And if you don’t like it, tough. The scent will stubbornly stick to your skin for the whole day. Both its staying power and sillage (the trail a perfume leaves behind) are very impressive. Unfortunately, the composition isn’t. It’s somewhat sensual, a touch mysterious, very sweet and extremely banal. But at least the jewel-like bottle will look very pretty on your vanity.

Givenchy Ange Ou Demon is a very sweet floral gourmand scent with just a hint of spiciness that seems, however, to belong to another fragrance. The scent has great sillage and staying power, but it is bland and boring.
