Brand: Giorgio Armani
What I liked:
– lovely fruity chypre with a gourmand vibe
– cozy and sophisticated scent for grown up women
– pretty bottle
What I didn’t like:
– not particularly original nor remarkable
– average staying power
Sì, the new fragrance from Giorgio Armani, is inspired by the classic chypre fragrances worn by his mother. But of course it doesn’t smell anything like them. It’s very difficult, with all the restrictions on ingredients such as oakmoss (an essential component of the chypre accord that can now be used only in minimal amounts solely because it can cause allergies in some people and not because it is dangerous or toxic) to create a true chypre these days.
So brands had to get “creative” and nowadays anything that smells remotely like a chypre is classified as such. Sì, to be precise, falls under the fruity chypre label. So, what does it smell like? Sì opens with a distinctive black current liquor note, accompanied by the tarty sweet aroma of a fruity confection, made with citrus fruits and pears. It smells like your kitchen does after you’ve taken one of your sweet treats, prepared with love for a special someone, out of the oven. It’s cozy with a mature feel to it.
After about an hour or so, someone places a bouquet of roses and jasmine, punctuated by a few little branches of wood, on the table. The roses are soft and powdery, the jasmine tame, while the woody notes discreetly prevent the composition from becoming too sweet. The drydown is a well-crafted mix of candy vanilla, earthy patchouli and tame woods, with hints of tobacco. Si’s man is now home, ready to enjoy a romantic dinner with her.
A lot of people have compared Sì with Lancome’s La Vie Est Belle, but I don’t agree with that at all. Yes, Sì could be considered a gourmand scent, although a sophisticated one at that, but it isn’t as candy, girly sweet as the Lancome creation. Si is drier, creamier and more sophisticated. It’s a scent for grown up, but not old, women.
Sì is perfect for the cold winter months. It envelops you into a cozy and warm embrace, just like a cashmere scarf does. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hang around too long. After three hours, it has already turned into a skin scent. Despite this, I really like this scent. It’s no masterpiece, but it’s different enough to stand out among the thousands of candy gourmand and sweet fruity floral concoctions that populate department stores. And that’s a great feat in these sad and predictable times for perfumery.
Giorgio Armani Sì is a fruity chypre with a gourmand vibe. Cozy and sophisticated, it makes you feel grown up but not old. However, staying power is only average.
