Elie Saab is my favourite designer. His clothes are always classy and feminine and make a woman feel special. They also cost an arm and a leg and I doubt I’ll ever be able to afford them. So, when the Lebanese designer launched his first perfume I was really excited. This was my chance to get a taste of his glamorous creations but, considering how fussy I am when it comes to fragrances, I thought I’d just try a sample first. But after wearing it for more than a week, I still can’t decide whether to get a bottle or not… Hmm.. So, what does Le Parfum by Ellis Saab smell like?
Le Parfum is described as a harmony of white florals (which I dislike), cedar woods (which I love) and a drop of honey (which is always nice), which I think is an interesting combination. However, the fragrance doesn’t start out that good. When you first spritz it on, you smell a burst of orange blossom and gardenia, that’s just too strong. Sadly, the gardenia also seem to overpower the orange blossom, which makes the opening heavy rather than refreshing and sparkling.
Luckily, it disappears pretty soon and, ten minutes later, they are replaced by the distinct smell of jasmine softened by just a hint of rose and honey. And then the aldehydes make their appearance. I really like this part of the fragrance. It’s sweet, but not-overly so, warm and feminine. As the fragrance progresses, it deepens while staying warm. The base is quite heavy on the patchouli, which may put some people off, but I like it. The patchouli doesn’t have an artificial smell at all but, on the contrary, is quite earthy. It is mixed with a good dose of cedar woods, which adds a sharp, somewhat sour touch to the fragrance.
Overall, Le Parfum by Ellis Saab is not groundbreaking, but still a very good first effort. Although not the kind of fragrance that I usually wear, I like it. It smells wonderful, is very classy and feminine, just like Saab’s gowns, and the square bottle, which is cut like a diamond, is very elegant and would look great on anyone’s vanity. But what about the staying power? I get about 6 hours of wear before I need to reapply it. It’s not that bad but I wish it lasted a bit more considering the price.
Elie Saab Le Parfum is a strange little fragrance. Although not unique nor daring, this blend of white florals, woods and honey smells wonderful, is classy and feminine. The strong patchouli note can put some people off but I think those who love floral fragrances will like this scent. However, it needs to be reapplied throughout the day and it is expensive.
