What it is
Diethanolamine (DEA) is a colorless and viscous liquid.
What it does
Diethanolamine is mostly used in hair and skin care products (shampoos, shower gels, body washes) to produce a rich lather and create a creamy texture.
It is also used to adjust the ph of cosmetics and it helps to form emulsions so that water and oils can blend together.
In addition, it is a solvent.
Diethanolamine is a mild skin and eye irritant.
However, DEA shouldn’t pose any health risks when used in products designed for discontinuous and brief use followed by rinsing from skin and hair. In products designed for prolonged contact with skin, instead, the concentration of Diethanolamine should not exceed 5%.
