Know Your Ingredients: Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax

by Gio

What it is
Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax is a thick wax derived from the leaves of the Brazilian palm tree Copernicia Cerifera.

What it does
Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax is used to thicken the oil parts of solid products like lipstick to give them their form and structure as well as ensuring a smooth application.
In addition, Carnauba Wax prevents the oil and liquid parts of an emulsion from separating and for this reason, it is very used in those products that need to have a creamy consistency.

Side effects
Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax can cause allergies.

“Carnauba Wax can cause allergies” is a useless statement – what kind of allergies exactly?

Jacqueline, I don’t believe it is an useless statement at all. Carnauba wax causes allergy to well.. carnauba wax. An allergy occurs when your immune system has an exaggerated reaction to a substance that is usually harmless and doesn’t bother most people. Symptoms can include redness, itching and rashes.

I started using a natural makeup with carnauba wax and have developed eye allergies could this be the cause?

Sabrina, I’m sorry to hear about your allergies. And yes, I’m afraid it could.

I began eating a jelled fruit snack like the ones you buy at your grocer around 2007. Unaware that my symptoms could be from an allergy, I blamed menopause, side effects to medications, stress and so on for my symptoms which appeared around the time I began eating these fruit snacks. I loved them and ate them all the time. My husband would eat them too, only not as much as I did. In the past few years he and I began having almost identical problems with memory loss. Lately my symptoms were getting worse. A mild type of migraine where it hurts on the right side of my head, vision disturbances, sinusitis with impaired sense of smell, night sweats, mild asthma, dry mouth and ringing in my ears. I have been to GP’s,an ENT,and a Gynecologist and none could find a cause for these symptoms. It dawned on me that when I ate these fruit snacks, my symptoms would appear again if I were feeling better or they would worsen if I were already feeling bad. I am now stopping the consumption of this product immediately. I will keep you posted on my hopeful improved health and well being if you would like. I am hoping these symptoms will stop. One of the ingredients in these fruit snacks is Carnauba wax.

Diana, I’m so sorry to hear what you are going true. It’s awful! I hope you have finally managed to identify the culprit and that stopping the consumption of the fruit snacks will improve your health. Yes, please, keep me updated.

Thank you! I believe I have found the culprit. It must be the food dyes. I stopped eating the fruit snacks a week ago and I was beginning to feel much better. My memory loss is improving daily. Yesterday I ate a bowl of Capt. Crunch Christmas cereal and developed the old familiar headache that is the most predominant symptom I have with this type of reaction. Today I feel better again and I’m not so fatigued. I hope this post will help others who have similar symptoms. I would recommend if the “experts” can’t figure it out, check what it is you’re eating.

Hi,

I seem to have an allergic reaction to some lip balms/sticks/glosses. It starts with a cough and then I have to drink water as my throat feels a bit restricted. It goes away once I wipe the product off and have a drink but it is a pain as I am struggling to find the common ingredient so end up wasting money on products. It could be Copernicia Cerifera Wax. Have you heard of anything similar?

Regards

Amy, I’m sorry to hear about your allergy, how awful! Carnauba Wax could be the culprit indeed. Try using a product that doesn’t contain it and see how that works for you. Hopefully it won’t give you anye problems. But the only way to know for sure what you are allergic to would be to do a patch test. If all else fails, you should consider it.

i think i just got an allergic because of the carnauba wax. i used eye pencil from certain brand and my under eye started to swollen, red, itchy, and dry the next day until today (been a week) i took some medicine (incidal) and it got better just a little but still red, itchy, and dry. i put on moisturizer under my eyes to prevent it to set into fine lines and i think it makes it worse. before going to see the dermatologist is there any suggestions? at least to reduce the redness, because i’m going to work wear no makeup on and it kindda bothers me. Thank you

Jessica, I’m sorry it took me so long to reply. For some reason my anti-spam plugin had put your comment in the spam folder, which I rarely check. I guess you’ve already found a solution by now and I hope you are well again. Sorry I couldn’t help. I’ll check the spam folder more often from now on.
