Best Of Beauty 2013

by Gio

Hello ladies,

2013 is almost over, so it’s time to take a look at the beauty products that captured my heart and made their way into my stash. Keep in mind, though, that these are products that I’ve tried, not that were launched, this year. They are quite a few, so let’s get started:

Best Of Makeup

best of makeup 2013

1. Illamasqua Powder Blush in Naked Rose
Although it looks tame and natural in the tube, this medium rosy, almost matte blush packs up quite a punch. Very pigmented, it also has a smooth texture that blends like a dream and lasts for hours on the cheeks.

2. Milani Liquid Eye Liquid-Like Eyeliner Pencil
Would you like to achieve the intense look of a liquid eyeliner, but with the convenience of a pencil? If you think that’s not possible, think again. These pencils deliver just that. Their creamy texture glides on the skin like a feather, leaving behind an intense line of colour that defines the eyes for hours on end.

3. Wet ‘n’ Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trios
Although these trios can produce some fallout, they are among the best eyeshadows you can find at the drugstore. Their pigmentation is outstanding, and their soft texture blends effortlessly. My favourite trio is I Dream Of Greenie, which features three bright green shades.

4. Bare Escentuals Buxom Stay There Eyeshadow in Collie
Cream eyeshadows and my somewhat oily lids don’t really get on that well together. Yet, this peachy gold shade has a waterproof texture that, once applied, just won’t budge. Even if you don’t use a primer underneath. Plus, its frosty finish illuminates your eyes, giving you a fresh and awake look.

5. Sleek Makeup I-Divine Lagoon Eyeshadow Palette
It’s no secret that I adore Sleek Makeup Eyeshadow Palettes. Lagoon is one of my favourites. Although the shades look really bright and scary in their pans, on the lids, they provide a delicate wash of colour. They are pigmented and bright, but wearable and versatile. You could create looks for every occasion with them. Their soft texture is easy to blend too.

6. Senna Haute Nudes Palette in Sultry
This sultry palette contains six neutral, but not boring, eyeshadows, a coral blush and a peachy champagne highlighter. All the shades have a soft texture that blends like a dream. The matte ones are particularly impressive. Pigmented and buttery-smooth, they have one of the best matte formulas I’ve ever come across.

7. Guerlain Cils D’Enfer Mascara
If it weren’t for the steep price, I’d repurchase this over and over again. It coats the lashes with an intense black pigment, lengthens, separates and thicken them, providing a fairly dramatic look that’s not over-the-top. Oh, and it doesn’t smudge, so you don’t need to worry about panda eyes.

best of skincare

1. Sunumbra Sunkids SPF 40
This zinc oxide-based sunscreen protects against the entire UV range. Because it is tinted, it doesn’t leave that unattractive white cast behind. Plus, its lightweight, non-greasy, texture sinks quickly into the skin. And, of course, it can be used by adults too.

2. Paula’s Choice Resist Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum
Retinol is among the very few ingredients which can really reduce wrinkles, but of course, it takes a lot of time to see an improvement. In addition to retinol, the serum is also loaded with antioxidants and soothing ingredients. It can boost collagen production, help prevent and fight the signs of aging, reduce discolorations and treat acne breakouts. The result? Smoother, brighter and younger-looking skin.

3. Haus Of Gloi Lip Balm
One of the most moisturizing lip balms I’ve tried, it leaves lips soft and smooth for hours, so you won’t need to reapply it often. It is available in several scents, one more delicious than the other.

4. Paula’s Choice Super Antioxidant Concentrate Serum
This silicone-based serum is chockfull of antioxidants (such as Vitamins C and E, Caffeic Acid, Cerulic Acid and Ubiquinone, to name a few) that help leave your skin brighter and younger-looking for longer. The tube packaging prevents the ingredients from degradation, thus keeping their efficacy intact.

5. Olay Total Effects Day Cream SPF 15
This is my fave daytime moisturizer. It is loaded with moisturizing ingredients, antioxidants and sunscreen agents (although you shouldn’t use it to replace sunscreen) that make skin soft and smooth, temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and prevent the formation of new ones. And it’s affordable too!

6. Haus Of Gloi Soft Bubbling Scrub
Best body scrub ever. Body exfoliation used to be a chore, but thanks to this it is now one of my favourite pampering rituals. It has a unique, creamy but stiff, and non-oily texture that glides smoothly on the skin, sloughing off dead cells, and leaving it smooth, bright and slightly moisturized. And it is available in lots of complex, original scents.

7. Haus Of Gloi Pumpkin Butters
My favourite body butters ever, they have a rich and creamy texture that’s very moisturizing and leaves even the driest of skins soft and smooth for the whole day. But what I love the most about these butters is their complex and unique scents. My favourite is Depravity, a decadent concoction of amber, woods, spices and a touch of coconut. Amazing!

best of the rest 2013

1. Etat Libre D’Orange Rien Fragrance
This is one of the best scents I’ve tried this year, but it isn’t for the faints of heart. It is an animalic, mysterious, smoky and dry leather concoction enriched with woods, amber and flower petals. It can be worn by both women and men, and once sprayed on, it lasts and lasts and lasts.

2. Senna Powder Point 33 Brush
This is my fave brush to apply bronzers. It has chiseled sides and a pointed tip that fits perfectly into the hollows of your cheeks. Because the firm and soft bristles don’t pick up too much product, you have more control over application, which results in a natural look. Plus, this versatile brush can also be used to apply face powders and highlighters.

3. Spornette The Feel Good Brush
“Thanks” to its fine and thin texture, my hair often becomes a knotty mess, especially after washing. Untangling it used to be a pain, until this brush landed on my desk. Its soft and flexible ball tipped nylon bristles glide easily through hair detangling it quickly without tugging nor pulling. And it gives you a nice scalp massage too! What’s not to love?

4. Braologie Shapewear
This is not, strictly speaking, a beauty product, but it does make you look more beautiful. This line of shapewear helps you stay upright, thus improving your posture and giving you a great silhouette. The bra also looks very pretty and sexy, so you won’t have to sacrifice your femininity for the many benefits this shapewear provides.

What are your favourite beauty products of 2013?

Disclosure: The Braologie, Paula’s Choice, Senna, Sleek Makeup, Spornette and Sunumbra items were sent by PR for consideration. The review is based on my own personal and honest experience with the product. For more information, please see my disclaimer.

Oh these are great lists! I haven’t tried anything from Illamasqua yet and this blush is definitely one I want to have a closer look at based on your review of it. I just may have no other choice than to try Guerlain Cils d’Enfer this year since it gets so much love! *sigh* 🙂

Icaria, they are both wonderful products. Expensive too, but they work so well!

Marina(Makeup4all) December 26, 2013 - 8:19 pm

I really want to try Milani Liquid Eye Liquid-Like Eyeliner Pencil now! And great post, I plan to write about my 2013 favourites after the holidays, too.

Gio December 26, 2013 - 8:57 pm

Marina, I hope you will manage to get hold of one. It’s so pigmented and very convenient to use.

I can’t wait to read your post and find out what products you loved this year. 🙂

Makeup Morsels December 26, 2013 - 10:59 pm

Lovely list, nice mix of drugstore and high-end as well! I HAVE to try that Haus of Gloi lip balm, you make it sound so divine (didn’t actually know they did lip balms). Which scents would you most recommend? Agree that the Milani eyeliners are amazing, especially for the price. The gold one is my favorite.

Gio December 28, 2013 - 9:19 pm

Makeup Morsels, I don’t think Haus Of Gloi lip balms belong to their permanent range. They are released in some of their seasonal collections and the flavours change all the time so it’s hard to recommend one. But they are among the most moisturizing lip balms I have ever tried so, should you chance to see them, grab them immediately. You won’t regret it!

I love Paul’s Choice face products .. I think this is a highly underrated brand .. not too many people chat about it.

Gio December 28, 2013 - 7:57 pm

Monica, I agree. It’s a shame the brand doesn’t get more love. Their products are very effective.
