best of beauty 2014

Hello gorgeous,

what beauty products have you fallen in love with in the past 12 months? In 2014, I discovered my HG lip balm, a zinc oxide based sunscreen that creates a perfect base for makeup, and, even more surprisingly, an ink black liquid eyeliner that even a clumsy girl like me can easily use!

And these are just a few of the beauty products that made their permanent way into my stash. Here they all are, in no particular order:

1. JACK BLACK INTENSE THERAPY LIP BALM SHEA BUTTER & VITAMIN E SPF 25
This is the most moisturizing lip balm I’ve tried so far. It leaves lips soft and smooth for hours, and protects them from UV rays as well. What more could you ask for?

2. SKIN ACTIVES ANTIOXIDANT SERUM WITH ROS* TERMINATOR
Infused with a powerful cocktail of antioxidants, this lightweight serum fights ROS* (reactive oxygen species) that contribute to premature aging. And it is suitable for all skin types.

3. SUNUMBRA DAILY SPF 15
Unlike most zinc oxide based sunscreens, this one is quite lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t live a white cast on the skin. Plus, it’s infused with antioxidants, protecting your skin from UV rays and premature aging. Perfect for daily wear under foundation.

4. DIOR ADDICT EXTREME IN AVENUE
A gorgeous rosy pink shade with a glossy finish that’s perfect for any occasion. It brightens up the face, doesn’t dry lips, and, when it fades, it leaves behind a stain that lasts for ages. It’s very pricey, so it’s more of a nice to have than a must have.

5. HISTOIRES DE PARFUMS PETROLEUM
Yes, you’ve read that right. This perfume is really called petroleum, and it’s really the best one I’ve tried this year. No, I haven’t gone mad. Although the strong gasoline accord won’t please everyone, Petroleum is a woody and aromatic blend that’s creative, original, and longlasting.

6. LAYLA SOS COLOUR & SHINE
Tired of nail polishes chipping or just losing their shine after a couple of days? This top coat, which can be used straight after nail polish application or when you need to revive your manicure, makes it last longer and shine brighter. And it dries very quickly too.

7. BODY RESPECT: WHAT CONVENTIONAL HEALTH BOOKS GET WRONG, LEAVE OUT, AND JUST PLAIN FAIL TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT WEIGHT BY LINDA BACON & LUCY APHRAMOR
Finally a book that sets the record straight about weight! The authors debunk common weight loss myths and propose a new approach: shift your focus away from changing your size to enhancing self-care behaviours that will improve your health.

8. SKIN ACTIVES VITAMIN C SERUM
A cheap, but very effective Vitamin C serum. Quick to sink in, it stimulates collagen production, prevents premature aging, reduces hyperpigmentation, and brightens skin too! The high concentration of Vitamin C may be irritating to those with sensitive skin, but everyone else will love this.

9. DIOR DIORSHOW MAXIMIZER
No mascara has impressed me enough to make it into this list this year. For that, they’d need the kind of help Diorshow Maximizer can provide. This lash primer adds volume, length, and makes mascaras last longer. Who needs false lashes anymore when this can give you a very similar effect?

10. SLEEK MAKEUP DIP IT EYELINER IN BLACK
I’ve always found liquid eyeliner difficult to use, but this one has a sturdy and slim felt tip that makes application a breeze. It’s pigmented, glides on smoothly, and lasts for ages. Only when it’s really, really hot, it flakes a bit. But for most of the year, it works so well!

Actually, I discovered Sunumbra sunscreen this year on your recommendation. I absolutely love it, even the smell! I’m currently using Sunkids SPF 40. My search for an HG sunscreen is finally done. 🙂

Laurie, I’m so glad I could help. Sunumbra makes the best sunscreens, doesn’t it? I’m hooked on them too.

I love Sleek eyeliner and I have just recently tried it.Usually, I would avoid liquid eyeliners as I’m not really good at working with them but as you said, this one is so easy to use and the pigmentation is perfect!

Helena, I was surprised by how easy it is so use. I’m not usually not any good at liquid eyeliner either. This is foolproof indeed.

Allison, Jack Black lip balms are sooo good, aren’t they? Petroleum is a very interesting scent. It smells somewhat like gasoline at one stage, but in a good way. Before trying it, I didn’t know that was even possible!

Gio, now you’re tempting me with that sunscreen (well the one with SPF 30), also with those Skin actives serums: do you use everyday the Vitamin C serum?

PS. Happy holidays!

Efrain, both the sunscreens and serums are really good! Nope, I use the vitamin c serum only 3 or 4 times a week. The instructions say twice a week, because the concentration of vitamin c is quite high and could irritate skin, especially sensitive skin, at first if used too often. My skin, however, can tolerate it pretty well, so I use it a bit more often, and without side effects.

Thanks! Happy holidays to you too!

Happy New Year Gio! I was JUST looking at serums yesterday and really wanted to find one that was all-natural and not $100 for a teensy bottle. So thank you for introducing me to Skin Actives Vitamin C serum, can’t want to try it! I also need to check out that sunscreen, as I’m so bad at wearing it in the winter. Thanks for this great roundup!

I’m so bad at picking out good products for skin and makeup…and with age 50 on the horizon always looking for suggestions for products that might help me maintain what is left of my youthful glow!! Sunscreen of course being very important so I will be giving that one a look. Thank you for your thorough reviews!
