April 22 is Earth Day. To celebrate it, I’m already thinking of ways I can help reduce waste and pollution, not just on that day, but every day. And, as a beauty blogger, the first thing I thought about was my beauty routine. How can I make it more earth-friendly?
After some brainstorming, here’s what I came up with:
1. Turn off the water!
It’s so easy to leave the water running while we’re brushing our teeth or washing and scrubbing our faces over the sink. But, water is too precious a resource to let it go to waste like that. Unless it’s absolutely necessary, turn it off.
2. Apply your makeup with brushes (or even your fingers)
Unlike disposable sponges and q-tips, your brushes and fingers can be used over and over again, which creates a lot less waste. I still use q-tips to fix mascara mistakes (that cheeky little thing ALWAYS ends up on my lids!), but that’s it.
3. Don’t use face wipes
For the same reason, I don’t use face wipes. I know they’re convenient, but, they create so much waste. A proper cleanser is much better for the environment, and your skin as well. Those face wipes never work that well, anyway.
4. Buy products with minimal packaging
Some products (I’m looking at you Fior Di Magnolia Lipstick) come in huge boxes that could comfortably fit 5 lippies or 3 creams. What a waste, right? Leave those in the shops and opt for something with mininal packaging. Bonus points if it’s made with a recyclable material.
5. Recycle packaging
Even when packaging is minimal, it’s still something you need to dispose of. Luckily, lots of brands have made that so easy for us to do by creating incentive programmes that reward us for bringing them our empty bottles, tubes, and jars for recycling:
- MAC: it gives you a free lipstick whenever you return six empty containers.
- Kiehls: when you return 10 empty bottles, you get a Travel Collection product.
- Lush: you get a free face mask every time you return one of their black pots.
Even if your fave brand doesn’t offer a recycling program, you can still recycle the packaging by finding another use for it. For example, your big jar of body butter can be used to store jewellery.
Are you going to make your beauty routine more earth-friendly? If so, how?
