In 2009, OCC launched the Lip Tars, a revolutionary new line of lip products that wear like a gloss but last as a lipstick, and are insanely pigmented too. Soon, they took the beauty world by storm. It wasn’t long before another brand decided to try and replicate their success. Two years later, British Sleek Makeup launched their own, cheaper, version of the Lip Tars, called Pout Paint. How do they compare? Lets’ find out:
Both OCC Lip Tars and Sleek Makeup Pout Paints have excellent pigmentation. You need just the tiniest amount of product to achieve an opaque, intense and bright coverage. These aren’t for the faints of heart. Unless you get a very pale and delicate shade, the colour will really make you stand out and get you noticed!
OCC Lip Tars have a very shiny finish that turns satiny, almost matte shortly after application. Sleek Makeup Pout Paints, instead, retain their glossy finish for longer, but do turn semi-matte too eventually.
Texture and application
The OCC Lip Tars have a very liquidy, runny texture, while that of the Sleek Makeup Pout Paints is on the thicker side. And while neither have a moisturizing formula, that of the Pout Paints is much less drying to the lips. I would still recommend you apply lip balm beforehand to keep your lips soft and moisturized, though. In addition, neither is sticky.
The runny texture of the OCC Lip Tars makes them a bit of a challenge to apply. Sleek Makeup Pout Paints apply more easily, but you should use neither if you are in a rush. There is no way you can apply them directly from the tube and then go out the door. You’ll need a lip brush and a steady hand because, due to their intense pigmentation, any mistakes will be hard to correct.
Sleek Makeup Pout Paint in Mauve Over
Just like their pigmentation, their staying power is outstanding too. Once they’re on, they’re on. They last for hours on end and can survive not only a light snack, but also a proper meal, making reapplication throughout the day unnecessary. However, they are not transfer-resistant so you’ll leave a stain on your glass, napkin, significant other or anything else you’ll touch with your lips. Some bleeding too occurs during the day. And when it’s time to take them off, you’ll need a good oil-based makeup remover.
OCC Lip Tars are infused with Peppermint Oil which gives a tingling sensation to the lips. It’s not painful at all and feels quite refreshing. However, Peppermint Oil can be irritating to the lips, so don’t use the Lip Tars too often. Those who dislike Peppermint Oil, instead, will be happy to know the Pout Paints don’t contain it.
There really is no comparison here. OCC wins hands down. The Lip Tars are available in 46 shades, while the Pout Paints only in 11. They both make a white shade you can mix with other colours to lighten them, and a blue shades to darken them. Or you can just mix any other shade you want, like a pink with a red, to create your own custom shade.
Price and availability
OCC Lip Tars are available at the brand’s website and at Sephora and retail at $19. The Pout Paints are available at Sleemakeup.com and, at €6.99 ($9,00), are much cheaper. OCC Lip Tars contain a little more product (o.33 oz/9.36ml, while the Pout Paints only contain 8ml), but I’ve found their formula tends to separate sooner, and, because their packaging is not very pliable, it’s not easy to put it back together. In any case, you need so little for each application, that, you’ll never be able to finish a tube of either of them.
So, which one is better?
As far as pigmentation and staying power are concerned, there really isn’t much difference between OCC Lip Tars and Sleek Makeup Pout Paints. They are both extremely pigmented and longlasting. But the texture of the Pout Paints is thicker, easier to work with and less drying. However, the Lip Tars have a much wider colour selection, so if you like muted or unusual shades, I’d start looking there.
Have you tried OCC Lip Tars and Sleek Makeup Pout Paints? If so, which is one is your favourite?
