You know what I love the most about the Christmas holidays?
Well, apart from Panettone and receiving presents? Holiday skincare sets.
Tis’ the season to try a new brand’s skincare heros without breaking the bank and getting your BFF’s hooked on your fave beauty products (just make sure they’re right for her skin type!).
If you or your BFF are suffering from dry winter skin, Alpha-H The Essentials Collection is the set to try. It’s packed with three clever little (read: sample size) products designed to deeply moisturise your skin and strengthen its protective barrier:
- Essential Cleansing Balm
- Essential Hydration Cream
- Essential Hydration Concentrate
My skin does feel the winter cold so this was the perfect holiday skincare set to try for me too. Here’s how it helped my skin:
Essential Cleansing Balm
Have you ever washed your face with moisturiser? That’s how it feels to use this cleansing balm.
Alpha-H Essential Cleansing Balm is infused with moisturising fatty acids that come both from natural oil sources, like grape seed oil, and synthetic sources, like Caprylic/Capric Triglycderide.
As the cleanser removes dirt and makeup, these fatty acids strengthen your skin’s protective barrier. In other words, their job is to make sure your cleanser takes away the right stuff (dirt and grime) without destroying the barrier that keeps moisture in and germs out.
Plus, they moisturise it, too. After every use, my skin is clean and soft. I don’t get that tight feeling that alerts me the cleanser stripped my skin of moisture. On the contrary, my skin feels soft, smooth and hydrated.
Its slightly oily texture spreads easily on the skin. I massage it for a few minutes before removing it with a cotton cloth. Or you can leave it on and use it as a night time moisturiser. Just be careful not to get it all over your pillow.
Or into your eyes. Don’t use this to remove your eye makeup. It stings.
P.S. Alpha-H doesn’t say this can be used as an eye makeup remover as it obviously can’t. But if you’re as clumsy as me, a drop or two may end up into your eyes anyway. Be careful!
Essential Hydration Cream
This is what I’m using in the mornings at the moment. It feels quite thick when it’s coming out of the tube but smoothes out nicely and sinks in quickly when you apply it.
Alpha-H Essential Hydration Cream contains a nice mix of humectants and oils to keep skin moisturised even in the harshest of weathers.
Humectants like glycerin draw moisture from the air into the skin while oils like jojoba seal it in and prevent it from evaporating again (or what would be the point of drawing it in in the first place?). Together, this combo keeps up your skin’s natural hydration levels so your skin stays soft all day long.
Then, there’s dimethicone. The heaviest of the silicones, dimethicone fills in fine lines and wrinkles so they look smaller and gives slip to the cream so that it spreads nicely and feels pleasant to use. I don’t have any problems with silicones (and while we’re on the topic, no, they don’t suffocate skin) but if your skin doesn’t like them, this isn’t the cream for you.
My skin tends to get drier in the fall and winter months but this cream is doing a very good job at keeping everything healthy and moisturised. Immediately after application my skin feels softer and my fine lines look smaller. These effects last well into the evening.
Did I mention it makes a good base for makeup, too?

Essential Hydration Concentrate
There’s no getting round it: if your skin’s very dry, you need an oil. Alpha-H Essential Hydration Concentrate has 9!
Carrot oil, wheat germ oil and apricot oil are all very moisturising. Calendula is soothing. Rosehip oil fights free radicals and boosts collagen.
I just wish rosehip had come before lavender oil in the ingredient list. Lavender oil has no benefit for the skin. On the contrary, it can be irritating. I’m sure it’s here to make the oil smell better but, please take it out and up the rosehip dose instead.
FYI, my skin can tolerate lavender oil (and calendula helps counteract its irritating potential too) but if your skin is very sensitive, I’d still stay away.
I use this oil in the evening at the end of my skincare routine. Its texture is s a little greasy but it sinks into my skin fairly quickly and doesn’t leave a mess on my pillow.
I find it very moisturising: in the morning, when I wake up, my skin is softer to the touch, my fine lines look a little smaller and my whole complexion subtly glows.
