So, body confidence. It’s something we all struggle with. How could we not when we’re continually bombarded by uber-photoshopped images and perfectly curated Instagram feeds?
Yet, feeling beautiful and confident in our own skin is essential to our well-being. How can we find love and happiness, or even just be healthy, when we believe we’re not worthy of these things because we aren’t pretty enough?
We can’t. We need to love ourselves, girls. But, how? Here are a few things to remember when we’re dealing with a poor body image:
1. It’s all about health
Positive body image is about having a healthy body and mind, not a thin body and no mind.
2. Being thin doesn’t mean being healthy
You can totally be thin and unhealthy, and be overweight and healthy. Health has nothing to do with numbers, but with nourishing habits. Moving our bodies, eating a diet rich in fruits and veggies, taking time off to rest and recharge… that’s what gonna make us healthy. Chasing a weight that’s not natural for you is only gonna make you ill.
3. Being thin isn’t gonna bring you happiness, success, and love
This nonsense just reinforces the idea that we are deserving of love, happiness, and success only when we reach a certain weight. But, we’re worthy of it now, and we already have everything it takes to create our dream life. We just need to start loving and believing in ourselves more, and hustle to make it happen.
4. Beauty is an inside job
True beauty starts from within. It’s not about being thin, flawless skin, or thick lips. It’s compassion. It’s confidence. It’s kindness. It’s love. That’s what makes you shine and be truly beautiful.
5. Beauty is a choice
Feelings are our own creations. They’re the product of how we think about what happens to us. That means no one can make you feel something. It’s you who decides what to believe, and therefore what to feel. So, choose to feel beautiful.
6. Comparison is the thief of joy
Don’t compare yourself to others. You and your friends may all do the same workout and eat the same healthy diet, and you are all still going to have different bodies. That’s just the way it is. And it’s beautiful.
7. Your body is going to change
Puberty, pregnancy, the natural aging process… You can be the healthiest person on the planet, but there’s no way your body is going to stay the same throughout your life. Your body changes with you. That’s amazing.
8. There Is No Perfect Body
We all have our little imperfections. Embrace them. They’re what makes us beautiful and unique.
9. Even Cindy Crawford doesn’t look like Cindy Crawford
Every image you see in the media is photoshopped. Even Cindy Crawford doesn’t look like Cindy Crawford in real life.
10. Caring about your looks is not vain
Loving makeup, dressing up to the nines, and caring about your appearance isn’t vain. If you do it for the right reasons (for example, because it makes you feel good), then it’s a form of self-expression and love. Never let anyone make you feel otherwise.
11. It’s ok not to wear makeup (or heels, or whatever)
Having said that, if you don’t like makeup, or high heels, or whatever, don’t wear it. You don’t have to look a certain way to please anyone else. You don’t own prettiness to anyone.
12. Don’t hate on other people’s bodies
Don’t gossip or say anything negative about other people’s bodies. It’s wrong. It hurts. There’s just no excuse for it. Everyone deserves love and respect regardless of what they look like. End of.
13. It’s not you, it’s the dress
Do you have feel depressed when you try on a gorgeous dress and it looks awful on you? Don’t. Clothes are all made to the same measurements, but every one of us has a different shape and size. It’s unrealistic to believe you can put them on and they’ll suit you to a T. If everything looks so good on celebs, it’s not because they have the perfect body type (they don’t). It’s because they have their clothes tailored to fit them.
How do you feel about your body?
