Brand: Thierry Mugler
What I liked:
– if you like heady floral fragrances and are a big fan of jasmine, this fragrance was created for you
– the bottle
What I didn’t like:
– if you’re not a fan of jasmine, this scent is not for you
– the price
When a fragrance is called Alien, I think it’s fair to expect something futuristic, that reminds us of outer space and other species that may inhabit other planets. Especially, when that fragrance is made by Thierry Mugler, who is famous for creating bold, daring statement scents. This impression is further enhanced by the surreal purple crystal bottle with gold details that make it look like.. well.. an alien. So, imagine my disappointment when I realized Alien doesn’t smell futuristic at all. I admit I’m not sure how the outer space and aliens smell, but I’m 100% certain it’s nothing like this.
Let me start by saying that if you’re not a fan of jasmine, then you can stop reading this review now as that’s pretty much all you’ll smell from the first spritz to the drydown. Alien opens with a solar accord, which is a fresh and warm orange blossom note. But that fades all too soon and jasmine takes over. I usually don’t mind jasmine as it adds just that hint of sweetness to a fragrance, making it smell feminine and warm, but in Alien this note is just too sweet, too heady and too loud. You have to like jasmine A LOT to appreciate this part of the fragrance, which lasts quite long, and I don’t.
Finally, jasmine is replaced by the Cashmere note, which smells woody and musky, and a hint of vanilla. They make the drydown smell dry, powdery and warm, although a slight sweetness remains. As for the transparent amber note, I didn’t detect it at all. I guess when they called it transparent they really meant transparent, ie so subtle you just can’t smell it. But overall, Alien was a huge disappointment. It’s simply a floral scent (and I dislike those) that is overly sweet and way too strong. And it hangs around for the entire day. I can only recommend it to big jasmine lovers, really.
Thierry Mugler Alien Fragrance is a heady, overly sweet and strong floral scent. The jasmine note is very strong and sweet and all you smell until you reach the dry and warm drydown. It is longlasting, but you’ll have to be a big fan of jasmine to really appreciate it. It is expensive too.
