If you’re looking for cheap but good quality eyeshadows that are safe, wearable and perfect for everyday looks, NYC Metro Quartet Eyeshadow palettes may just be what you need. I was lucky to try two of them, Union Square and South Street Seaport, thanks to my friend Dao who sent them to me in a swap, and while I usually wear more colorful shades, I love these for days when I’m in a rush as I can create some quick but beautiful natural looks with them that are appropriate for all occasions.
First up is Union Square, my favourite of the two. It features a warm brown with subtle orange undertones, a dark chocolate brown, a warm-toned medium brown and a pale golden shade. Apart from this last shade, which is the highlighter so it’s supposed to be sheer, the other 3 shades are very nicely pigmented and you don’t have to layer and layer and layer like it’s necessary with most drugstore shadows.
The shadows have a satin finish, are easy to blend and with the help of a primer, you’ll have no problem with creasing and fading. I find Union Square to be perfect to create natural looks that are office-friendly. And if you use the darkest brown shade on the outer V, you’ll get a more intense look that can be worn during the night. Overall, a very versatile palette.
Being a fan of pink, the other palette I got is South Street Seaport, which contains a medium-pink shade, a warm, not too dark chocolate brown, a soft brown and a white shade. While the two brown shades have good color payoff, the pink one is very sheer and you need a lot of product to make it show up. As for the white shade, that’s pretty much the same shade as my skin, so that’s why you can barely see it in the swatch. But since it’s a highlighting shade, I don’t really mind. I’m more disappointed in how poorly pigmented the pink one is.
Oh well, for only $3.99 I can’t really complain, especially since the colors work so well together to create a beautiful and sophisticated look that is very suitable for daytime. The shades have a pearly finish too, are easy to blend and last long with a primer, just like those in the Union Square palette.
The compacts are black, nice and sleek and contain a dual-sided brush with a sponge tip on one side and bristles on the other. However, the brush is so small that it is completely useless. Also, the palettes are quite small, which makes them easy to carry around and very travel-friendly.
Inside, they’re a clear plastic protector that tells you where to apply the shades (but of course you can just use the shades however you want) and on the back step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the look. I find these are very helpful for women who are just starting to use makeup and make application fool-proof for anyone.
Overall, the NYC Metro Quartet Eye shadows Palettes in Union Square and South Street Seaport offer great quality eyeshadows at a fantastic and cheap price. Both palettes have nicely-pigmented, soft shades that blend easily and last long (if used with a primer) to create natural, everyday looks. The packaging is small, but that makes it very convenient to carry it around and on trips.
