Narciso Rodriguez Essence is a hard scent to describe. It is clean, pure and elusive, and it doesn’t really smell like anything in particular. Rodriguez wanted it to represent duality, “the intense and the ethereal, the simple and the complex” and, while I don’t find it particularly intense (it only lasts a few hours and only those very close to you will be able to smell it), they have nailed the rest. Essence features a lot of the notes favoured by Rodriguez: florals, musk and an aldehydes accord.
The aldheydes sparkle right from the very beginning, laced with a soft rose note that will become more prominent in the core of the scent. Here, it is joined by just touch of iris. It’s enough to give it a slightly powdery vibe, but not so intense that you’ll end up smelling like your grandma. The musks, which are quite clean, are used lavishly in the drydown, where it is joined by the ever-present rose, amber and vanilla. The result is warm and sexy but with an effervescent touch.
Overall, Essence is a clean, unisex fragrance that can be worn by anyone at any time of the day and of the year. It’s not particularly remarkable or original and it doesn’t change that much from the opening to the drydown, but it is still well-crafted. It has also some soapy and powdery touches (which are quite subtle but still distinctly discernible), that remind me, when I wear it, of newly-washed sheets and clothes that have been laid in a drawer with a sachet of rose and iris petals to give them a nice scent.
Narciso Rodriguez Essence Fragrance is a clean and warm floral musky scent with a sparkling aldehydes opening. Although not very remarkable, it is well-crafted and suitable for everyone and anytime. However, sillage and staying power are only average, which is quite disappointing, especially when you take the price into consideration.
