Name: Dior Homme 2011
What I liked:
– soft floral scent for men with aromatic and woody facets
– different from most colognes on the market
– good sillage
What I didn’t like:
– tamer than the original
– average staying power
In 2011, Dior reformulated their classic cologne, Dior Homme. The new version features a black, instead than silver, atomizer, while the juice inside is more restrained and tamer than the original, so it will appeal to a wider audience (and women too).
Although Dior describes the scent as an aromatic woody concoction, to my nose it smells more life a soft, powdery floral with aromatic and woody touches. It’s so different from the usual dark woody or airy and aquatic compositions that crowd the shelves of department stores, which makes it a great choice for men who want to try something new.
Dior Homme 2011 manages to firmly remain in the masculine edge of the spectrum, while hinting slightly at a softer, feminine side. A strong burst of bergamot, enhanced by aromatic whiffs of sage and lavender, is swiftly and quickly followed by the powdery aroma of iris. Here, the iris isn’t as strong and dominant as it was in the original version. Its powderiness and intensity has been taken down a notch.
The iris is soon enveloped in a warm ambery embrace, made sweeter by hints of cacao. Although the heart is powdery and sweet, and has a feminine quality to it that will also appeals to the ladies, it always retains its masculinity. This is a scent for men, but men who aren’t afraid to show a softer side to the world. The drydown, instead, is a classic blend of patchouli and vetiver, enriched with leather. It’s smooth, warm and beautiful.
The staying power of Dior Homme 2011 could be improved as I only get about 7 hours of wear, but its sillage can’t be faulted. It’s not too subtle, but by no means overpowering either. The scent is perfect for a casual date with friends, but it could easily be worn at the office too. Although the ladies will compliment you for wearing it, I’d rather opt for something sexier for a romantic date.

Dior Homme 2011 is a soft floral cologne for men that features aromatic and woody facets. Although not particularly original, and tamer than the 2005 version, it’s still a nice choice for men who wants something different from the usual aquatic or woody concoctions. Sillage is good, but staying power only average.
