Sometimes, toothbrush and toothpaste aren’t enough to keep our teeth healthy. If your gums are sensitive, prone to bleeding, or you simply want a fresh breath, a mouthwash can help. At the moment, I’m using Dentyl Active Plaque Fighter in the Smooth Mint flavour. As the name, implies, it is especially formulated to fight plaque.
The mouthwash comes in a simple, triangular-shaped, see-through bottle. The formula is dual-phase. To activate it, you have to vigorously shake the bottle, allowing the two solutions to mix together, before every use. Drink (without swallowing of course!) a tiny amount of it, rinse your mouth for 30 seconds, gargle and spit it out in the sink.
Dentyl Active claims that when you gargle, the formula will lift and remove the bacteria and debris that cause plaque and bad breath, and that you’ll see them in the sink afterwards. Personally, I didn’t really see much in my sink, but the mouthwash seems well-formulated to do its job anyway.
It contains Cetylpyridinium Chloride, which has been found in a 2008 study to “provide a small but significant additional benefit in reducing plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation.” It also contains Sodium Fluoride, a common ingredient in oral care products, which can make ” teeth stronger and more resistant to decay caused by acid and bacteria.”
Triclosan, too, helps contribute to the reduction of plaque. Instead, what this mouthwash doesn’t contain is alcohol. That’s good news because it means it won’t irritate nor sting your mouth. It’s very gentle.
The mouthwash also makes your breath very fresh. It took me a few rinses to get used to its minty flavour, but that could be because I’ve never been a big fan of mint. If you aren’t either, you’ll be happy to know this stuff also comes in Fresh Clove and Minty Citrus, which hopefully tastes more citrusy than minty. Although the mint flavour could taste a bit better, it’s neither too fake nor overpowering, and very refreshing!
Aqua, Isopropyl Myristate, Mentha Avensis, Sorbitol, Sodium Saccharin, Sodium Phosphate, Sodium Fluride, Cetylpyridinium Chloride, Triclosan, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1, 3-Diol, Limonene, CI 42090, CI 47005, CI 61565. Contains Sodium Fluoride 0.05% (225ppm F).
