I love heady, rich, and intoxicating perfumes. If it gives others a headache, then I dig it. But even I can’t wear them in the summer. When the sun shines brightly in the sky and the temperatures rise, I, too, opt for light and refreshing fragrances that keep me cool all day. But I don’t completely give up more sophisticated and opulent concoctions. I just opt for tamer alternatives that are particularly suitable for a breezy and hot summer night.
There are five scents in particular I gravitate to in the summer. Curious to know what they are? Read on:
L’Artisan Parfumeur Seville A L’Aube
I don’t have a signature scent, but if I did, L’Artisan Parfumeur Seville A L’Aube would be it. Inspired by a special night blogger Denise Beaulieu spent in the arms of her lover at Seville during Holy Week, the scent capture all the smells associated with that place and time: the bitter orange tree in full bloom, the honeyed aroma of the beeswax candles, the incense burned during the ritual and the whiffs of lavender cologne rising from the tightly pressed bodies. The result is a beautiful oriental scent that focuses on orange blossom. It’s bright and mysterious, warms and intense. And on a hot summer day, it just blossoms.
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue
Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue is one of the most famous summer scents ever. And for a good reason. It is bright and sparkling, like a clear summer sky. The aromas of zesty citrus fruits and crispy apple create a fresh opening that soon turns into a floral and tame bouquet of jasmine and bamboo. Finally, the scent ends on notes of warm amber, woody cedar and subtle musk. Although it’s not particularly original nor complex, it is a lovely and carefree scent. On a breezy and laid-back summer day, that’s just what you need. I just wish it lasted longer. I only get five hours of wear from it.
Juliette Has A Gun Midnight Oud
An oud fragrance in the summer? Are you mad, Gio? Oud is strong and pungent, even dark and animalic. There’s no way this would suitable for the hot season. But it is. Hear me out. Juliette Has A Gun Midnight Oud is the tamest oud scent I have ever come across. This opulent, but not heady, fragrance opens with a strong burst of dry saffron laced with bergamot. Then, oud takes center stage. Here, it smells like a brand new leather bag decorated with a few bright roses. The drydown is a woody-ambery accord enriched with patchouli. Midnight Oud is subtle enough to be worn even during the day without giving those around you a headache. But it is on a hot summer night that its beauty truly shines.
Elie Saab Le Parfum
I’m not a big fan of designer fragrances – they’re too tame and safe for my tastes – but there’s something about Elie Saab and his creations that just pulls me in. Every single time. The man knows how to make a woman feel special. Elie Saab Le Parfum is a harmony of white florals, cedar woods, honey, and aldehydes. The result is a classy and feminine concoction that can be worn on most occasions and is perfect for the hot season. Staying power could be improved though. I have to reapply it after six hours.
Histoires De Parfums 1969
Although it is inspired by a revolutionary year, Histoires De Parfums 1969 is a sweet floral scent that almost enters into gourmand territory. Not exactly what you expected 1969 to smell like, right? But the result is wonderful. 1969 opens with a bright and juicy peach note that screams summer. Soon, it tuns into a powdery bouquet of white flowers and rose, spiced up by clover and cardamom. The drydown is a delicious blend of coffee and chocolate, laid out over a musk and patchouli background. It’s a harmony of cold and warm notes that can be used all year round, but I love to wear it in summer. It’s tame enough for the hot season and it hangs around for the whole day.
